Finally, some humanity
Mattjohnsonva9 August 2018
Not going to recap the story, not sure why reviewers do that as it's already in the synopsis. Here though is the best episode to date. Whilst the Welsh lynch mob is somewhat badly done the rest of the story is tragic but with a beautiful ending. I see feelings developing for Tom from Mared and I suppose it's inevitable where that will end up, but at least now we see some of the characters acting with some humanity and some emotion rather than wandering around giving everyone the eye like some miserable automatons in previous episodes. At the end I had tears in my eyes, so something worked and I do want to watch the next one.

Vigilantes in West Wales
Tweekums8 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
When a solicitor's body is found by his live-in cleaner the locals are quick to point suspicion on Daniel Protheroe; a local young man who lives with his mother. At least that is what everybody thinks; when the police go to his house they find his mother's body. She has clearly been dead for a long time and there is no sign of foul play. The locals decide that Daniel is a double killer and determine to deal with him even after being told to leave the search to the police. The leader of these would be vigilantes has other reasons to want to deal with Daniel; his daughter has been seeing him and he never approved. As the investigation proceeds a second mystery is uncovered when the grave of a baby is discovered; DNA evidence shows that Daniel's mother is also the mother of the baby… and she only ever had one child! DCI Mathias and DI Rhys now have to discover just who Daniel is as well as finding the killer.

While DCI Mathias is still somewhat depressed it doesn't interfere with the story. The story itself was interesting; featuring two good mysteries; the second of these was more intriguing as the viewer tries to guess who Daniel Protheroe really is. There is a good sense of menace provided by the locals… even if it is a little unlikely the group wouldn't have had their shotguns seized given their comments made in front of the police! These sorts of details can be overlooked though as it serves to make things more interesting. The story is well told and leads to an exciting confrontation followed by a touching finale. The cast does a solid job making the story believable. Overall another good episode; my only real complaint is that the tiny subtitles were hard to read at times; white text on a white background is not very good!

Vigilantes in Aberystwyth, never....
Sleepin_Dragon6 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A witch hunt is underway in Aberystwyth following the death of a Solicitor. Strong feeling in the community against wayward local Daniel Protheroe. Matters aren't helped by the fact that Daniel is seeing the daughter of one of the mob group, Glyn Powell. Mathias is suffering mentally after recent events, with relations between him and his colleague strained.

I wouldn't say it's the best episode in terms of story, other are far more dramatic and hard hitting. Where this episode scores incredibly highly is the interplay between the characters, most notably Mathias and Mared. It seems that nobody working in his department likes anybody else, Prosser seems to be getting more and more dubious, and is now looking to twist the knife into Mathias, Mared once again sticking up for the prickly Mathias.

Quite a grim story, particularly the discovery of the dead baby, that was a little dark, but did add to the story I suppose. All in all though, once again, this is excellent. 9/10

Well Turned Tale
Hitchcoc29 August 2017
At times Mathias goes rogue. This is one of the times when his actions are way too severe. Admittedly, he begins to feel sympathy for a boy who has lost everything, but because he is a loner and a recluse becomes prey to people who think he is dangerous. Tom's actions don't change the fact that this is a good story with true heroism involved. Does the end justify the means? Yes, in this case. But Mathias's refusal to let others assist him and going off half cocked is a bit tiresome. There are some contrivances as work here, but otherwise this is one of the better offerings, if not the best so far.
