King Louis recalls from exile his scoundrel brother Gaston, duke of Orléans. Robbed of his wallet at arrival in a Paris tavern, he randomly stabs as suspects several veteran patrons. The musketeers can get him out safely only by promising a fair trial, but the king won't hear of Treville's plea to compromise the honor of his brother, who is destined as regent for the child dauphin as Louis expects to die from a white plague within the year. While the musketeers seek to keep the peace and some justice, demanding the thief to be handed over for trial by veterans leader and publican Christophe, governor Féron sends in his Red guard to smash resistance and especially retrieve the wallet, as Gaston confided in him it contains no cash but letters proving his traitor rebellion plot with the duke of Lorraine. All parties are in for danger and disappointments despite the truth being uncovered.
