Exclusive: Peter Morgan’s next project for Netflix is likely to be a film adaptation of his stage play Patriots rather than more of The Crown, according to sources close to the writer.
There has been a flurry of reports in the UK this week about The Crown returning following the success of Scoop, but Deadline understands that Morgan is planning to take a break from the royals.
One project Morgan is prioritizing is a screen version of Patriots, which chronicles the rise of billionaire Boris Berezovsky and the deputy mayor of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin.
The play recouped during its 12-week run at the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End, helping it transfer to Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
Netflix backed the Broadway show, marking its Broadway producing debut. A source said the deal also included a commitment to develop a Patriots film. The project is yet to be fully greenlit.

“Something that we were all really drawn to is the ornamentation of the Victorian era,” explains “Manhunt” production designer Chloe Arbiture about taking a bolder approach to designing over 200 sets for what a well-known period in history: the aftermath of the assassination of the 16th U.S. President. “We wanted modern audiences to relate to it and to feel like there was a stake in it,” she explains about her team’s focus on ornamentation, decoration and detail. “When we look through; I mean even I’m guilty of it, but when I look through black and white photographs, I don’t really feel like this big human connection to things. But we all talked about how what makes the story human is color, is richness, is detail, and that’s something that really drove us through the entire creative process from the beginning to the end.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Exclusive: Prince William and the recovering Kate Middleton will not be in attendance at this Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards.
Deadline has learned that the Duke of Cambridge, who has been the film and TV org’s president since 2010, will instead record a video message that will be played during the ceremony, for which nominees include four actors from The Crown.
William attended the BAFTA Film Awards in February alone as his wife was recovering from illness, and we are told it is not unusual for the pair to only attend one of the two major BAFTA awards ceremonies in a calendar year.
William has been attending some engagements recently but Middleton is currently recovering from cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. She revealed the news around six weeks ago via a video message, stating that doctors had found the cancer during tests after an operation. There had been speculation about the...

The film will tell the true story of the relationship between Welsh schoolmaster Philip Burton (Jones) and a wild young schoolboy called Richard Jenkins (Lawtey). Richard dreamed of becoming an actor, but his ambitions were in danger of being derailed by a combination of family trouble, the pressure of war, and his own lack of discipline. Mr. Burton recognised the raw talent in his pupil, and made it his mission to fight for him, becoming his tutor, strict taskmaster and eventually his adoptive father. Jessica Henwick (“Glass Onion”) and Alisha Weir (“Abigail”) have been tapped for new animated feature “The Land of Sometimes.”
They will join “Star Wars” icon Ewan McGregor and “The Crown” star Helena Bonham Carter on the project, which also features one of the final performances from the late “Monty Python” alum Terry Jones.
A first look of the film, which is repped by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution for global sales, is set to be shown to buyers in Cannes next week with director Leon Joosen (“The Little Mermaid”) on hand to introduce the project.
“Be careful what you wish for!” reads the logline. “Twins Alfie and Elise get more than they bargained for when the Wish Collector takes them to an island full of wonder, with ever-changing seasons. They face a mechanical foe, fantastical creatures and a truth that shines brighter than any wish: the power of family.”

Earlier today, Disney CEO Bob Iger outlines plans to reduce Marvel Studios' film and TV output over the next few years. This is part of a "quality over quantity" approach, which was implemented after several recent MCU projects underperformed.
In fact, the most recent big-screen release, The Marvels, ended up becoming the lowest-grossing MCU movie of all time after taking in just $206 million worldwide at the end of its theatrical run.
While speaking to Empire, studio heads Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito acknowledged that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been going through a "rough time," but they both believe that this year's Deadpool and Wolverine will mark a turning point for the franchise.
“If we just stayed on top, that would have been the worst thing that could have happened to us," said D'Esposito. "We took a little hit, we’re coming back strong. Maybe when you do too much,...

Given its warm critical reception and past PGA and SAG Award notices, it makes sense that “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” has maintained a massive lead over its Best TV Movie competitors ever since we opened our 2024 Emmys predictions center. However, because the original “Monk” was never even nominated for Best Comedy Series during its eight-season run, the one-off Peacock continuation can’t exactly be considered a shoo-in. In truth, it faces quite a few strong challengers, including the laugh-packed Netflix offering “Unfrosted.”
Hours before its May 3 premiere, “Unfrosted” rose above its 100/1 Gold Derby odds and pulled ahead of both “Finestkind” and “Genie” to become this year’s seventh most likely TV movie nominee. Its next immediate challenge is passing sixth place runner “Scoop” (also from Netflix), which is currently a predicted nominee among our editors and experts.

In the new play Patriots, The Crown creator Peter Morgan delves into the enigmatic world of Russian politics and oligarchs’ role in constructing modern Russian history.
Through the play, Morgan, renowned for his portrayal of villainous characters, seizes the opportunity to expose a Byzantine spectrum of moral values through four Russian men, as their destinies intricately intertwined in the post-Soviet era.
“There’s a sort of violence,” Morgan recently told The New York Times of the play. “Whereas in The Crown, there’s this politeness and there’s repression, and it’s very female. There’s something very male, very violent about this play. It felt like a natural thing to do, having spent so much time in the one world to go into another world just to relax a little.”
Among the numerous influential individuals who contributed to Putin’s meteoric rise, Morgan selected Boris Berezovsky as the play’s focal point.

Marvel Studios has released a new TV spot for Deadpool and Wolverine - although it's not exactly packed with new footage!
There might be one or two new shots in there, but the teaser is mostly made up of footage from both previous trailers (set to Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight"), as Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) attempts to convince Logan (Hugh Jackman) to help him save the world.
We also have what might be our first live-action look at Wolvie's comic-accurate mask.
Numerous pieces of promo art depicting the full costume have been shared online at this stage, but this photo from a merchandise stand appears to be a shot of Jackman himself in the suit. It's hard to be certain, as it may simply be much more detailed artwork than we've seen previously.

Olivia Colman and John Lithgow head the cast of “Jimpa,” a multi-generational family tale involving a nonbinary teenager and her mother who take a trip to see their gay grandfather. The Australia- and Europe-set film is directed by Sophie Hyde, whose most recent film was the breakout “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.”
The film is now in its third week of production in Amsterdam and will later shoot in Adelaide, Australia and Helsinki, Finland.
Rights to the film are being handled by Protagonist Pictures in much of the world and by CAA Media Finance in North America, with sales kicking off at the Cannes Market next week. The film has already locked in Cineart as distributor in the Benelux region and Kismet and The Unquiet Collective for Australia and New Zealand.
Oscar winner Colman’s recent credits include “The Favourite,” “The Lost Daughter” and the hit Netflix series “The Crown.

Back in 2019, on a visit to Los Angeles, celebrated Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali stopped in at the offices of Netflix. In his informal five-minute meeting with CEO Ted Sarandos, Bhansali pitched an idea — it would be an opulent tale of warring courtesans set amid India’s struggle for independence. Sarandos greenlit the project on the spot.
Now Bhansali’s Hindi-language series, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” is making its U.S. debut (episodes dropped on May 1). Spanning 1920 through 1947, the lavish story is set in the Heeramandi district of Lahore, British India, the milieu of the tawaifs. As with the geisha of Japan, tawaifs were trained in music and dance and courted by nobility. At the show’s center are Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala), the scheming queen of Heeramandi, and her vindictive niece Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), who has ambitions to take her aunt’s place.
The project’s development took somewhat longer than that Netflix visit.

Ken Watanabe, the Oscar-nominated actor who is a star of the Emmy-buzzed HBO/Max drama series Tokyo Vice — he plays Hiroto Katagiri, a detective in the organized crime division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and a father-figure to Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort), an American journalist in Tokyo — is being entered for Emmys consideration as a leading actor just like Elgort, contrary to widespread reporting that he would be pushed as a supporting actor, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Tokyo Vice is currently in the awards conversation for its second season, which has been even better received (93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) than its first (released in April 2022, it’s at 85 percent), and has been the most widely watched Max original on the platform since it dropped. Los Angeles, May 5 (Ians) Actress Imelda Staunton, who portrayed the late monarch, revealed that she had a “difficult” time filming ‘The Crown’ following Queen Elizabeth’s passing.
“For the better part of three years, I was inhabiting someone real in a true story that was serious and challenging. We’d resumed filming, and very soon after, the Queen died, so it was difficult,” she told Yours magazine, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
“We carried on with as much dignity and grace as everyone always had done, but, obviously, there was a very different atmosphere in the world and on set.”
The actress reminisced about just having to “carry on” as normal but noted that she and her castmates were all “a bit sad” and the Queen’s passing had changed things in some way.

For six seasons, The Crown told the story of the British royal family during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The show combined real-life events with acts of imagination, meaning that it was not always a hundred percent accurate. Season four of the series introduced everyone’s beloved Princess Diana, played by Emma Corrin, who later handed over the role to Elizabeth Debicki in season five.
The Crown Season 4
Emma Corrin, though a great actor, had only a few acting credits to their name before being cast as Lady Diana. Needless to say, the job made them quite nervous. After all, they were bringing one of the United Kingdom’s most popular personalities to the screen. In fact, there was one scene where they got a panic attack while filming.

Formerly best known as The Crown’s Prince Charles, the British actor is starring as a cocky US tennis pro in Guadagnino’s new hit film. But, he says, he was happiest living off grid in a van for his next film, La Chimera
What makes a movie star? Josh O’Connor, the 33-year-old British actor best known until, well, last week as the thin-skinned, tight-lipped Prince Charles in seasons three and four of The Crown, has been mulling over this question of late. Earlier this year he completed a drama set in the first world war called The History of Sound, with Paul Mescal. “Paul’s a friend, and to watch him work was amazing,” says O’Connor. “I really can’t underplay how brilliant he is. Paul has that movie-star quality, whatever that is. I wish I could articulate it, but he’s just graceful about it all.”
Zendaya is another one.

Between the trailers and the various character cameos, we've been able to get a pretty good idea of the general premise of Deadpool and Wolverine, but it sounds like Marvel Studios has been keeping some fairly significant plot points out of the marketing.

Last summer, a report that Ben Affleck was spotted on the set of Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine did the rounds online.
Since it had already been confirmed that the R-rated threequel would include a bit of Multiversal madness and a few cameos (we now know it'll be more than a few), this understandably led to speculation that Affleck might be set to make an appearance as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and the news that Jennifer Garner's Elektra will be involved only added fuel to the fire.
Affleck returning as the Man Without Fear always did seem unlikely, since the actor has never looked back particularly fondly on his time as the Hell's Kitchen vigilante That said, he's always had a sense of humor about it at the same time, so a fun cameo wouldn't have been too big a stretch.
Now, Daniel Richtman is reporting that Affleck definitely won't...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we take another gander at the wide-open drama races.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to our favorite 2024 Emmys genre: drama! I kid, of course, but there is something still dramatic about this year’s drama categories – even as we (I) wait with bated breath to see which limited series blinks and joins the party in these final days, pre-printed FYC ads be damned. For now, we’re all operating on the idea that “The Crown” is the favorite here, but that feels like it’s operating on more vibes than reality. The final season of the Emmy Award-winning series was certainly better received than its preceding season… but it was a far cry from the sweeping fourth season.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Kevin Feige Advised Hugh Jackman Not To Return After Logan; New Still Released
There was a lot of excitement when it was announced that Hugh Jackman would be reprising the role of Wolverine for a team-up with the Merc With a Mouth (Ryan Reynolds) in Marvel Studios' Deadpool movie, but not everyone was fully on board.
For many fans, James Mangold's Logan was the perfect send-off for Jackman's take on the iconic mutant, and there was a perception that bringing the character back would only cheapen his emotional farewell.
As it turns out, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige felt the same way!
“I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back’,” Feige recalls to Empire. “‘You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. That’s not something we should undo.’”
Feige came around to the idea when it was explained that Jackman would be playing a different Variant of Wolverine for this movie, which was confirmed in the recent trailer.

Luca Guadagnino believes filmgoers will endorse his Zendaya movie Challengers because it delivers “a canon of Hollywood golden age comedy – seductive fun with queerness.” The movie’s “big sell” is a shot of Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor kissing one another in various configurations.
Challengers is establishing itself as a Gen Z “date movie,” with a 75% female audience, mostly under the age of 24. Its high-powered social media campaign triggered a $25 million opening weekend globally, defying the pre-summer box office torpor.
The movie has also been well received by Gen Z reviewers who are faithful to their lexicon of film criticism – male characters are approvingly deemed “heteroflexible,” females “polyamorous,” etc.
It was a surprise to his fans that Guadagnino, an Italian filmmaker, set out to make an American-set sports movie (he is not a sports fan) about a tennis world to which he was alien. As with his other films,...

According to recent reports, reshoots for Deadpool and Wolverine are currently underway, and could continue until the end of the month.
Additional photography is pretty much the norm for any major studio blockbuster, but some fans still tend to assume the worst. While it's true that reshoots can often alter significant plot points/character arcs, more often than not, it's something much more trivial.
According to Daniel Richtman, the D&w reshoots are mostly to add even more cameos. Marvel Studios and director Shawn Levy are pleased with the movie, and aren't attempting to "fix anything."
There's been some concern that the Merc With a Mouth's MCU debut is already shaping up to be too much of a "cameo fest," so we're not sure how well this update will sit with fans - although we've heard that most of the surprise appearances will happen during the same sequence, which might...

Indian studio Applause Entertainment’s upcoming big-budget series “Gandhi” aims to humanize the Mahatma.
The first season covers the formative years of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s life as a law student in London and later as lawyer and civil rights activist in South Africa, during which time he conceived the ideas that ultimately led India to independence from British rule. Gandhi became known as Mahatma, or great soul, for his leading part in the independence movement.
The series sees the reunion of Applause, director Hansal Mehta and actor Pratik Gandhi (no relation to the Mahatma) who plays Gandhi, after hit SonyLIV series “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” (2020).
The benchmark for on-screen depictions of Gandhi remains Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (1982), which won eight Oscars.
“It’ll be complementary in that sense, because Attenborough had some three hours to tell the story, which is a big story and a big life,...

Exclusive: The independent investigation into bullying and misconduct allegations at revered London drama school ArtsEd has been delayed by three months.
Ghazaleh Rezaie, the barrister engaged to investigate claims uncovered in a series of Deadline stories, was expected to report back to the board with her findings in March.
The attorney has now informed the drama school, where Andrew Lloyd Webber holds the honorific title of president, that she will not conclude her work until late June.
In an email to parents, ArtsEd’s acting chair Farida Mannan said: “I would like to inform you that the date for the publication of the public statement, with a summary of the conclusions for the Rezaie investigation, has been extended to 28th June 2024.”
Mannan did not articulate reasons for the delay, but Deadline understands that the review has been more complex than originally anticipated and Rezaie is examining allegations that date back years.

Promotional/marketing material for Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine continues to find its way online, and this latest artwork pays homage to a classic comic book cover.
The Incredible Hulk #340 (1988) saw the Green Grey Goliath and Logan go toe-to-toe in a brutal brawl, which culminated with the mutant berserker eviscerating his opponent. Even Wolvie's claws weren't enough to keep the Hulk down for too long, though, and the two heroes were soon back at it.
Here, the cover is recreated with Wolverine reflected in the Merc With a Mouth's swords, and Wade in Logan's claws.
The art also gives us another look at Logan's comic-accurate mask, which we have yet to see in live-action. Fans were hoping the cowl reveal was going to be one of the big moments from the recently released trailer, but it seems to be something the studio and director Shawn Levy are doing their best...

Josh Brolin's Cable was introduced in Deadpool 2, and after initially serving as an antagonist for Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), the time-travelling warrior joined forces with the Merc With a Mouth and his allies.
It was Cable's future tech that allowed Deadpool to travel back in time and prevent Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) and the members of X-Force from being killed, so it was generally assumed that the character would return when Marvel Studios announced that a third movie was in development.
Though there is always a chance Cable - and Zazie Beetz's Domino - will appear in Deadpool and Wolverine, their returns have not been reported on by the trades or the various online scoopers who accurately leaked a lot of the other cameos.
While speaking to Brolin about the second season of Prime Video's Outer Range, The Playlist joked that since he's listed as part of Deadpool and Wolverine's cast on IMDb,...

If there is any Emmy field that is utterly wide open it’s Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Despite the decline of Peak TV, there should be enough submissions for six nominees as was the case the past four years. That being said, the only contenders that even appear to be locks for a nomination are Carrie Coon (“The Gilded Age”), Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”), and Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”).

Zendaya’s brand new romantic sports drama Challengers has been at everyone’s hearing pretty much before the movie finally hit the cinemas last week. The film also starring The Crown’s star Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist eventually made all the hype in social media work for itself and didn’t take much time to dethrone Alex Garland’s post-apocalyptic hit Civil War from the box office top.
Though all the stars seem to still align for Challengers’ blast as the movie started its theatrical run only several days ago, some earlier predictions for its success show that it actually could’ve done better.
According to earlier reports that were released ahead of Challengers’ world premiere in theaters, the movie was projected to gross at least $20 million in the domestic run while the international numbers were supposed to ultimately cement Luca Guadagnino’s drama’s hit status.

It’s been nearly a year since Netflix stopped offering the Basic plan to new customers, but existing users could still access it.
The takeover of Netflix’s Standard with Ads plan is continuing. One report in April suggested that the streamer had 7 million customers on the tier in the United States and Canada alone, and Netflix has made plenty of moves to try and enhance the plan’s attractiveness in the eyes of customers since its November 2022 launch. The streamer has already sunset its cheapest ad-free plan for new subscribers, but existing customers of the Basic plan have been allowed to keep it until now. A new report from Streaming Better indicates that Netflix has been warning some subscribers that they are about to lose access to their Basic plan, as the streamer tries to get as many viewers to opt for the ad-supported option as possible.

AMC Networks’ plans to submit the zombie spinoff “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” as a limited series for the Emmys have been killed.
The cable network had announced plans to submit the six-episode spinoff, created by Scott M. Gimple, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln, for outstanding limited or anthology series at the Primetime Emmys. However, Variety has learned exclusively from two sources with direct knowledge that the show is ineligible to submit in the category.
In 2021, the Television Academy defined what constitutes a limited or anthology series, stating that the story must be resolved within its season without any ongoing storylines. This criteria affected past winners, such as the second season of “The White Lotus,” which was required to compete as a drama due to Jennifer Coolidge’s recurring character. If there was any doubt at all that Zendaya is one of her generation's biggest A-list stars, this past weekend just squashed it. The actress had a bunch of big hits to her name, including the most recent "Spider-Man" trilogy, but she had yet to have the opportunity to open an original movie with her as the central star. Well, she did just that over the weekend as the R-rated, original tennis drama "Challengers" hit theaters and topped the box office with a $15 million take domestically. Very few non-horror, original movies have broken through in the pandemic era big enough to take the number one spot on the charts. That was just the tip of the iceberg.
While Zendaya's latest was topping the charts, "Dune: Part Two" still found itself in the top ten in its ninth weekend of release. Director Dennis Villeneuve's sequel to 2021's "Dune" added $1.9 million to its ever-growing total domestically,...

This article will contain some spoilers for Challengers, so reader beware if you haven’t seen Luca Guadagnino’s new film…
Tennis isn’t for everyone – some people just want their Spidey fix. That’s what happens in one scene of Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, where the daughter of Tashi (Zendaya) and Art (Mike Faist) asks to watch a Spider-Verse movie instead of tennis. But as the director explains, it wasn’t meant to be directly linked to Zendaya’s own Spider-Man movies.
As Guadagnino told Entertainment Weekly, those thinking that Spider-Verse moment in Challengers was an intentional easter egg are mistaken, as it was really just out of circumstances. “When you get rights for something to be used in a movie, it’s very complicated. Amy Pascal, our amazing producer, was of help there. I said, ‘Amy, can we use one of your catalog titles so it’s going...

Although they haven’t been husband and wife for decades, Sarah Ferguson’s still “loyal” to Prince Andrew. Why? Because, according to a royal biographer, she made a promise to the late Queen Elizabeth II. Ahead, why the Duchess of York will never “leave” the Duke of York.
Sarah’s looking ‘after’ Andrew as Queen Elizabeth asked
Discussing Sarah and Andrew on Royal Exclusive, royal biographer Ingrid Seward said: “Sarah is extremely loyal to Andrew,” (via The Sun).
“I do think she found, especially in the early years of her marriage, this arrogance that he has—a ‘don’t you know who I am’ entitlement,” the My Mother and I author continued. “She loved him, but I think she found that side of him difficult. But she has remained very loyal.”
Andrew and Sarah, both 64, were married for 10 years from 1986-1996. Since their split, they’ve remained close, living together at the Royal Lodge.
