There is a lot to love about the appearance of simplicity in this film – and the way it conflicts with the detail that it really has. The plot is comparatively simple – a character seeks their place in the world – and it plays out as such. However the character is a E5 Edison Screw light bulb, who is a physical representation of an idea inside someone's brain.
This idea plays out in stop-motion, giving the film a great physicality to the animation. It is simple in its events but it does what all the better Pixar films do, which is to add heart to their characters. The little idea/bulb is adorable and has sufficient reactions to add that sense of sentiency. The detail of the animation is equally charming, and it is delightful to see the idea play out within the visualization of the brain – plus, I'm always a sucker for well-done stop motion, and this is indeed well-done stop motion. In an internet full of short films trying to be edgy, important, arty or otherwise, it is great to find out that sets out to be lovely, and achieves it.
