Learn more- In the Society, the future is now, and it doesnt look promising. Merely a decade ago, the Great Famine, brought about by a mysterious pestilence, destroyed nearly all food reserves. Given the scarcity of resources and the cry of the starving masses, The Bureau of Population Management has taken control of the situation by limiting the number of new children born into this perilous situation. One child per family, that is the new law in the Society. Any additional children born to any family are at immediate risk for termination if they are not fortunate enough to be adopted within the brief holding period. The Society and its Bureau of Population Management have temporarily staved off the hunger, but as the population dwindles, few children are given a chance to live.
Taran, a citizen in the Society knows this all too well. Not long after the Great Famine, he lost his young sister to termination according to the Societys new law. Taran became a Population Control Agent in an attempt to work hard at finding adoptive matches for the many children at risk for termination at the Bureau. Now as the pressures mount from the Bureau for faster processing of terminations, Taran finds himself questioning what authority this government has to decide between life and death. Then he meets the Resistance, an underground group dedicated to smuggling children away from the Bureau for a chance at free life.
The Bureau of Population Management clearly states that Approved Children Are The Future. Taran comes across a child marked for termination who reminds him of his long lost sister. He may have a way to smuggle her to the Resistance, but the risks are enormous. As the Bureau closes in on the Resistance, Taran finds himself in the middle of a fierce battle between oppressive government mandated death, and the desire for free life. Taran must decide to either remain in the Society or forever become an outcast. If he helps just one child escape, he has joined the Resistance.
