Documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville is hard to pin down. While he made his name with music docs, from Oscar-winner “20 Feet from Stardom” to Yo-Yo Ma concert film “The Music of Strangers” (HBO/The Orchard), he’s moving away from music subjects. “There are a handful of music docs I’d love to do, including David Bowie,” he said in a phone interview. “But at the moment I’m interested in stretching myself on projects on design, food, and art.”
Over the last year, Neville jumped into the debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley for “Best of Enemies,” (Participant/Magnolia) and took an unexpected ride with Chelsea Handler on Netflix documentary series “Chelsea Does.”
Netflix approached Neville after working with him on “Keith Richards: Under the Influence.” Said Neville, “I’d worked on music docs for years. It felt like writing a novel. By the time I got to Keith Richards,...

Nothing fits the music documentary format quite so compellingly as a life cut tragically short. In addition to the ready-made dramatic arc, a subject who leaves this mortal coil before their time usually also leaves a certain amount of mystery in their wake, providing ample grist for filmmakers (and the folks they interview) to chew on.
Even when the hows and whys of an artist's tragic exit are a matter of uncontroversial record, questions of "What might have been?" inevitably linger over their prematurely truncated discography — in itself a far...

Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville has chronicled the life and work or artists such as Iggy Pop, Carole King, Burt Bacharach, James Taylor and more. However, likely nothing could've prepared him for taking on one of the biggest rock 'n roll legends of all time. "Keith Richards: Under The Influence," which made its Word Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (our review) before hitting Netflix this past weekend, finds Neville profiling the one and only Keith Richards, the iconic guitarist for the Rolling Stones. You couldn't ask for a more perfect cinematic subject, and in many ways, it's something of a circle completed for the director. I recently got on the phone with Neville for the latest installment of our Movies That Changed Your Life feature, and his passion for British cinema and music early on makes him the perfect person to guide viewers through the life and music of the one and only Keef.

The devil-may-care, rakish charisma of the rough-hewn rockstar Keith Richards is on full display in the brand new Netflix-released documentary, Keith Richards: Under The Influence.
It's an intimate portrait of the biggest rascal in rock 'n' roll history. Originally conceived as a companion video for the release of his new solo album, his first in 23 years, Crosseyed Heart, that project was expanded into an 80-minute history lesson of Keef and his true influences culling incredible archival material, interviews, and studio footage of him recording his new solo album. The craggy-faced Keith with lit cigarette in hand, chuckles and chortles as he regales stories of his love and passion of the blues, country, rock, guitars, musical comrades, and his position in The Greatest Rock Band in History.

Keith Richards swept into Toronto late this week to inject fresh excitement into Tiff just as the parties were waning, filmgoers were yawning and industry heavvies were flying back to the States. Sporting a snakeskin jacket, a Jamaican-coloured headband and impenetrable mirrored glasses, the 71-year-old rhythm guitarist for The Rolling Stones was here to promote Morgan Neville’s documentary, Keith Richards: Under The Influence. It enjoyed its world premiere here last night before playing today on Netflix. The consensus in Toronto holds that Under The Influence is really a commercial for Richards’ latest album, Crosseyed Heart, also released today. No surprise that […]...

When it comes to rock and roll fantasies, most of us would surely put "hanging with Keith Richards' near the top of our list. Really, who wouldn't want to spend some quality time with the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist, spinning records, playing Fender Telecasters (preferably named after Dickens' characters) and having the old pirate regale you with tales of over a half-century's worth of musical adventures?
Director Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom, Best of Enemies) got to do just that while making Keith Richards: Under The Influence, which premieres...

Certain reviews warrant a disclaimer right off the bat, and this is one of them. The Rolling Stones are before my time, and the evolution of my musical taste skipped the phase where rock-and-roll should be. With that in mind, from my vantage point, Stones guitarist Keith Richards has always been more the image of the classic drug-and-booze-addled rockstar than an actual rockstar. While some of you may discredit everything that follows based on that bit of honesty, some should at least take comfort in the fact that I walked into the new Netflix documentary "Keith Richards: Under The Influence" with an objective a mind as possible. Directed by Morgan Neville, the man responsible for the 2013 surprise Oscar-hit "Twenty Feet From Stardom," the documentary follows Richards around as he muses in his signature wayward drawl on the various influences that inspire his music, and specifically his brand-new solo album Crosseyed Heart.

It seems like documentaries are reaching a wider audience than ever before, and part of that has to be because of Netflix. The streaming-video giant has placed an emphasis on acquiring high-profile non-fiction movies like the Oscar-nominated “The Square” and “Virunga,” and twenty documentaries, including “The Battered Bastards Of Baseball” and “Hot Girls Wanted,” have premiered as such. The next, and one of the most notable to date, is “Keith Richards: Under The Influence.” The doc from Morgan Neville, the Oscar-winning director of “20 Feet From Stardom” and “Best Of Enemies” is a portrait of the legendarily hellraising Rolling Stones guitarist as he records his first solo record in nearly 25 years and looks back on his love of music and, as the title might suggest, his strong blues orientation. The rise in critical acclaim for television shows over the years has been well-documented, with a corresponding rise in interest among viewers to discuss and analyse television the way films are at festivals. While festivals dedicated to television shows, such as Atx and PaleyFest, are on the rise, film festivals still outweigh them.
For its 2015 incarnation, however, the Toronto International Film Festival will be doing something unique, beginning a programme dedicated to television. Titled the Primetime Programme, the section of the festival will conduct screenings and Q&A sessions just like the films that play at Tiff, focusing on specific episodes of shows instead. The lineup for the inagural Primetime programme has now been announced, and can be seen below.
