Yoshinobu Nishizaki (Yamato franchise owner) attempt created a futuristic sequel to Space Battleship Yamato franchise, set several hundred years after the original series. However, Nishizaki was sued by Leiji Matsumoto (co-creator) for breach of copyright, and Yamato 2520 was left unfinished and cancelled in 1996.
Four volumes (of eight) was released. Vol.0 (was a documentary)released in 1994. Vol.1 and Vol.2 released in 1995. And finaly Vol.3 released in 1996.

The second project was about the new Yamato project, Space Battleship Yamato Ressurection (tentative title)
The story was set in the year 2220, 17 years after the story of the last film, Final Yamato. A wandering black hole is approaching the Solar system, and will surely destroy all life on Earth. The decision has been made to evacuate Earth's entire population.
Because Nishizaki was sued by Leiji Matsumoto (co-creator of the franchise) for breach of copyright, this project and Yamato 2520 become cancelled in 1996.
In March 2002, a Tokyo court ruled that Yoshinobu Nishizaki legally owned the Yamato copyrights. Nishizaki and Matsumoto eventually settled; Nishizaki began work again on the Yamato Ressurection movie. However, additional legal conflicts stalled both projects until August 2008, when Nishizaki announced plans for the release his new Yamato film on December 12, 2009.
The team of creators that released the Space Battleship Yamato; Ressurection (final title) used many ideas and concepts of the cancelled project (that was on the documentary) in this new movie.
