The horror
kosmasp5 March 2017
You know if you are into jump scares and just love any horror movie, I guess you'll enjoy yourself. Still I'm surprised by the overall high rating. And that is not only because one of the cast members distances him- or herself from the movie, but just the pure fact that the movie is filled with clichés. So many that it kind of started hurting physically.

So while I couldn't fault the movie for any technical aspect (and I guess that's plus that I like the actors in it, despite their horrible characters made me be kind in my rating), I don't feel that way when it comes to the script. It starts off kind of good and it does sort of maintain a certain mood. But it's so crazy what the characters do ... I mean yes I realize we wouldn't have certain movies, if characters behaved as if they actually had a brain, but still this stretches anything you'll be able to stomach. I'd even say I like the ending in a weird way, even though it hurt too ...

For genre fans and Halloween parties
kluseba14 September 2020
From a House on Willow Street is a supernatural horror movie that oozes with atmosphere but comes around with a very exchangeable plot that has been used over and over again in similar ways in the horror movie genre. The film revolves around four young friends who decide to kidnap the heiress of a diamond distributor to demand a hefty ransom. The quartet takes six weeks to plan everything and manages to kidnap the young woman without any problems. However, things start to get a sinister turn when the criminals realize that their victim is in terrible shape and looks as if she had been rescued from her family mansion rather than kidnapped. After a while, strange incidents start to occur in the abandoned factory where the group is hiding as static hinders communications, electricty malfunctions and the kidnappers start to see dead people who were once dear to them. Things definitely spiral out of control when the kidnappers are unable to reach the daughter's parents and realize that neither media nor cops seem to be informed about the case. The four friends must find out the grisly secret that the kidnapped daughter is hiding in order to survive a night when the hunters have become the hunted.

This movie convinces on several levels. It has a gloomy, grisly and mysterious atmosphere from start to finish. The locations such as a sinister mansion and an abandoned factory have been perfectly chosen. There are a few scary scenes that work quite efficiently thanks to decent light techniques and a moody soundtrack.

On the negative side, the plot is predictable from start to finish which takes away much of the potential tension. The acting performances are only average at best. It doesn't help that the different characters are lacking depth and development.

Despite its flaws, From a House on Willow Street should appeal to fans of atmospheric horror movies. It's not a particularly creative film but still entertaining from start to finish. Since it's providing a few scary scenes without being overtly complicated, this movie might be a good choice for a Halloween party with some friends.

B Horror Goodness
expertsalespro1 July 2017
If you put this film on with high expectations you will not enjoy it. If you're a horror fan and don't mind a bit of poor acting and some weak writing but enjoy a solid idea and decent cgi gore, enjoy. The effects are good the plot works for a horror film and the pace is pretty steady. If this film was released in the 90s it would've been a big deal. As it stands, I'd recommend it to horror fans only. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Awful.
gungygussit24 March 2017
I watched this film because of it's 7.9 rating.

5 minutes in I started thinking...this doesn't come across like a 7.9, ten more minutes passed - it's not a 7.9.

Clearly someone has been playing with the votes, this film is awful. The acting is terrible along with the cast, the story is sub par and the horror aspect it predictable and very much not even remotely jumpy.

Avoid this film at all cost.

Warning: Spoilers
How can people give this movie such good reviews, i cant remember the last time had had such a painful experience. The 3 male actors ruined the movie within the first 15 min, they are just terrible. Cheasy lines just keep coming one after the other. "Trangool", devour of souls, released on earth after taking 4 human souls, "One for each corner of hell". Who writes something that daft. I would give him my soul if i got back the 1 hour 26 min i wasted on this crap, its a long way down since 2011 horror classic for the leading lady...

PS: 4 SOULS AND HE WOULD BE UNLEASHED, THEY FOUND 4 DEAD PEOPLE IN THE GIRLS HOUSE, THE MOVIE WAS ACTUALLY OVER BEFORE IT STARTEF

Piece of utter garbage
RealisticCritic23 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
How this got a 5 * rating is far beyond me. This was a piece of rancid garbage.

I didn't realize this was going to be a possession movie, which I'm not a big fan of anyway, but I have seen decent ones. This was not even close to decent.

So she can manipulate objects and kill people with them, yet can't manipulate the shackles holding her? Ok, maybe I can buy that in some weird way. But the other stuff? I can suspend belief with the best of them, but ffs.

The possessed girl can hoist grown men off the ground, yet has problems taking out the one female at the end. She can stop bullets and send them back at a person, but is beaten to incapacitation with a wrench. Sure. She takes out the other people pretty quickly with her demon tongue, yet at the end when she and the two other possessed guys have the last gal incapacitated at the van, they stand there for about 2 minutes just writhing around and swirling their tongues until they're stopped by some other random spirit (yes, I know who it is. But that made zero sense as well). "But it's in slow motion so it's dramatic!" Yeah, right.....

Not only that, but she could've taken them out long before they even got to the building they were holding her in. Or like another user said, she had plenty of souls to pick from in the first place when they tried the exorcism.

The acting is ridiculous, as is the fact that the main female kidnaps somebody, for personal reasons and gain (which the reason is shown to be unwarranted and wrong), acts all hardcore, then suddenly we're supposed to forget all that and sympathize with her as she turns into the cliche, screaming mess you'd find in any other horror movie.

Speaking of cliches, the whole "possessed person doing the quick neck bend to the side with the sound of the bones cracking" is ridiculously played out and overused anymore. In this one it's painfully obvious it was simply jumping on a fn bandwagon.

There are many other migraine inducing elements in this movie, but I won't mention them all. I'll just say that either the reviews are padded by friends and family of the people involved with the movie, or there are some extremely sad, pathetic, and brain dead people watching it. Maybe a little bit of both.

In short, a horrible, terrible movie.

One of the most awful films I have ever watched!
emilee_wardle25 March 2017
Created an account to say how awful this film is how it has such high ratings I don't have a clue. Biggest waste of my time I have ever spent it is full of every cliché I've ever watched within a horror film and I could guess the plot easily from the start. It's boring and the characters frustratingly stupid. Don't bother watching this at all!

Why is the rating so high for a movie so horrible??
mejaflora24 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'm losing confidence in IMDb rating. This is the 2nd time I watched a movie based on the rating and within 20 minutes was left scratching my head wondering what could have gotten the movie such a high rating. My suspicion is all the staff of the movie goes to IMDb and click on the best rating without leaving a review which is why there is less reviews from real people and a lot of votes.

This movie is predictable and cliché. Some scenes dragged out too long and you start counting the minutes to when it's going to end. When they 'think' they have a winning scene, they repeat again and again and again. That cliché of everything going dark and suddenly something scary pops in front of you screaming is no longer a shock, it's what everyone starts to expect hence NOT scary. Then it disappear then it comes back, then it disappears then it comes back. Seriously its like a game of pop the squirrel. Just give me a hammer and I'll pop the bloody thing's head.

I gave up after 30 minutes and forwarded to the end. It was funny, that she got saved at the end by someone so unlikely and she is not even surprised. God that scene dragged out for minutes and for viewers movie minutes feel like hours.

This is NOT a good movie. It's been done so many times. No shock value, no surprises, no real scares. And the captured girl already delivered the best review like in the first ten minutes - let me go or you will all die tonight. Thanks for the warning.

The current rating is far too generous.

This is your average b horror movie -- amateur acting/casting and cheap jump scares.

Not worth the time in my opinion.

Do yourself a favor and find a different movie to watch.

Good experience
noel-5177130 March 2017
I just can't understand why people are rating this movie low. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Though there were some errors in special effects but, plot and story are overall great. When I started playing it, I thought it is over rated but as the time passed it grabbed my whole attention. I would love to rate it as a 7 star movie.

I wanted to like it...
km_staple5 July 2018
It wasn't completely awful. The worst scene of all was the flashback with the priest and family around the table. Some of the worst acting and dialogue I've ever heard. It had some good moments so I don't feel like I wasted the whole time.

Ignore the critics. Original, twisted and exciting new horror concept
robertemerald2 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes I find it hard to fathom why certain movies get such a hard time from reviewers. I'll go through some of the criticisms. House On Willow Street is accused of using cheap jump scares. Actually that's probably true, only the scares aren't that cheap, in that ghosts pop up here and there. But the movie doesn't in any way rely on these scares for its overall arc of tension and fraught desperation. They are just incidental manifestations of a demon growing stronger, and the fact is that the band of criminals soon suspect this unreality and generally hold their nerve. Willow Street is also accused of using horror cliches. Not true. If you read such reviews you'll notice that most don't indicate what cliches they are referring to. One that did name a cliche had issue with the creaking neck of the demon. OK, we've seen creaking necks before. No one seems to mind this cliche in reference to dozens of zombie movies. Generally situations move so fast and are so engaging that maybe a cliche or two is used, such as talisman cuts appearing on people's bodies as they are possessed, but the action is so fast and frantic, and there are so many clever details, that all I experienced was profound entertainment. Another criticism is that the demon exhibits huge powers but is unable to free itself from shackles. True, but levitation and reversing bullets is not quite the same as smashing an iron collar, and besides, the further into the story the further the demon has to dissipate power to control subjects already possesses. And it is also quite clear a battle is raging within the demon against the original possession, whom, of course, can't be killed outright as the demon needs the body it inhabits. Questions about the acting standard and the script are ridiculous. Both are excellent. This isn't a teen movie, perhaps that's the sort of formula people are missing in that regard. The special effects were really cool in this movie. I found this movie to be wonderful entertainment, with rich texture and lighting, a superbly original concept, a wonderful desperate tension that drove everything before it throughout, great editing and some brilliantly chosen camera shots. The soundscape was well targeted. I have no problem giving this terrific horror gem a 9.

No One is Afraid of the Dark
claudio_carvalho27 March 2017
For six weeks, Hazel (Sharni Vinson), Ade (Steven John Ward), James (Gustav Gerdener) and Mark (Zino Ventura) plots a plan to abduct the daughter of a jewelry dealer Katherine (Carlyn Burchell). When they break in the house of the family on Willow Street, Ade sees cabalistic symbols in her wardrobe and then he brings the young woman to an abandoned facility in a van. They chain Katherine in the basement and video-tape her. They send the video to her family and calls her father to ask for the ransom. They are not able to contact him by phone and Ade and James drive the van back to the house to talk to him. However they find Katherine's parents dead on their bed and two priests died on the basement. Ade finds a couple of videotapes and bring them to their hideout. When they watch the video, they see that they have unleashed a demon and they are doomed to die.

"From a House on Willow Street" is a creepy and scary horror film. The story and the screenplay are very well written increasing the tension along the new discoveries of the criminals. The lead character Hazel is very well developed and the gruesome locations and the dark cinematography supports the plot. The optimist conclusion is a little deceptive since there is no explanation why the demon became weaker but fans of genuine horror film will enjoy "From a House on Willow Street". My vote is seven.

this movie is like a 3.8
surfisfun24 March 2017
7.9 as of march 2017, make me wonder if they had automated ratings to boost the overall rating. this movie fill like made for TV and id say its a 3.8 to 5.6 rating worth. I give 1 star in hope to lower the already 1000 plus votes. Too slow in a bad way before scares happen, and some cheap scares. It had potential as a script wt some rewriting . acting so so.

Too many credibility issues.
paulclaassen10 June 2018
What I loved about the film is that they don't waste any time by jumping right into the action. It is really truly freaky in the beginning as we learn there is something sinister going on. Sadly, though, after a promising start, the film dwindles to loads and loads of credibility issues and 'been there done that' territory. They are trying just too hard to give every character a back story, as the demon feeds on their darkest secrets and fears. The reveal through the kidnapped girl's video diary is not believable at all and rather silly, actually. The way the gang immediately finds what is relevant to the story is just not credible. The film completely looses momentum towards the end as suspense makes way for reveal upon reveal. Some good visuals, though, and I did enjoy the satisfying ending.

This is a generous rating
jacobwadsworth5 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I've literally given this 2/10 purely because it's actually well made, unfortunately that's where it ends, the plot doesn't actually make much sense, the acting is terrible to the point where you want them to die, and the demonic girl is very un-scary and annoying, and why on earth do they turn into zombie demons in the end? Genuinely made me laugh

Hard to explain a rating higher than 6.5
teetoh66626 March 2017
I just got fooled by the rating of this flick on IMDb. Just like "A cabin in the woods", this flick had a rating higher than 7 with more than 1,200 votes, which tricked me into giving 1h30 of my life into watching it. Big mistake. Terrible acting, wrong special effects, plot as cliché as one can be... This movie is ridiculous and does not deserve more than a 4.

This could have been so much much better
the_wolf_imdb17 May 2017
There is one huge sin in horror movies: You should never ever reveal too much nor too little. The best part of the horror movie experience is trying to understand what is going on. Give too little explanation and you will end up with something really annoying as no one could understand the movie. Give too much and the movie just stops being scary at all.

The best way is to reveal the background only in small pieces and maybe to build a misleading theory that falls apart at the end. The best mixture could end up like Sinister: You will see the point at the end but it is too late for the hero. And even after ending of the movie you will have no clue how the end could be prevented. It leaves chills and unpleasant uncertainty.

This movie fails in the second way: It simply explains too much too soon and becomes silly. In the middle of the movie you will know pretty much everything - what is going on, what is the cause, how to resolve everything. Everything is explained by the bunch of conveniently placed videotapes in excruciating and really unnecessary detail.

And exactly at that point the movie just stops to be scary at all. It is not that terrible, it is just an opportunity wasted by the author of the script who seems not to be familiar with basics of horror. It could be so much much better - all it needed was to reveal less background, use less cheap scares and focus more on the process of discovering what is really going on.

It could be as good as The Autopsy of Jane Doe. It failed because authors have no clue about story writing and they decided to focus on primitive and cheap Matrix style scares instead. They could save 80% of special effects budget, they could make a lot simpler story AND make the movie way much better.

In that sense it is quite a fail. The movie is not that horrible, it is just an opportunity horribly wasted.

Another high rated movie which actually is crap
urmeltinmahead27 March 2017
I along with many of the other commentators chose this movie based on its rating. At 5.9 I wasn't expecting greatness but what I got instead was this pile of crap. Acting 2/10, story 1/10, CGI 1/10.

I kept watching to see how awful this was and it did not fail me. How this got a rating higher than 2 I do not know and makes me question the authenticity of it.

Total joke the ratings on this site, before you view anything on here go see what other sites say.

A Nice Surprise Of A Horror Film
P3n-E-W1s310 April 2017
This is the kind of kick-in-the-pants the horror genre needed.

In a much-abused genre, it's difficult to add anything new so what writer and director Alastair Orr and co-writers Catherine Blackman and Jonathan Jordaan did was to change the situation and in doing so added a breath of fresh air to the genre.

Hazel, Ade, Mark, and James are habitual criminals in search of the elusive "Big Score". It's Hazel who has the idea to kidnap the daughter of her father's former partner. It was he who was responsible for her father losing his business while he gained all the power in the jewellery business.

Knowing there's a lot to be made the gang kidnap Katherine and take her to a warehouse to await her father paying the ransom. However, there's something wrong... Katherine's parents don't answer their phone or their cells... It's only when Ade and James return to the house that the mystery starts to reveal itself.

All the actors were respectable in their roles, though Carlyn Burchell as Katherine, Steven Jon Ward as Ade, and Zino Ventura as Mark were stronger in their portrayals. It was the story and the acting which made the movie for me as the direction was pretty average and didn't really add anything.

In fact, there was one scene that very nearly spoilt the entire movie for me and that was when the director decided to go slow motion to say look at my special effects aren't they nice(?) Who the hell uses slo-mo anymore(?) Then there was the decision to change a character's personality for the last segment of the film. Hazel, played strongly by Sharni Vinson suddenly becomes weak and continually scared. This makes her more like a stereotypical horror "Scream Queen". This happens so suddenly that I just stopped and wondered "What the Hell!?" There was no need for it and it weakened the story, character, and film. Bad Move.

There are also a few other minor inconsistencies that you may notice, though they don't hurt the film as much as the couple mentioned above.

Well worth a watch, even if it is only once. I may even watch this one again if it makes it onto any of the telly channels.

Warning: Spoilers
This counts as two people's review, we could have done something more interesting like watching grass grow. Probably the worst "horror" film made since cinema was created, not even a bad horror film that makes up for it by giving you something to laugh at, it's just plain annoyingly crap.

angela-478-18845327 March 2017
I enjoyed watching this film. I don't usually go along and watch movies like this one but I must say I was pleasantly surprised to how much I actually enjoyed it. The acting is good the story line is great. There were some scenes that I had to turn away from and some had me holding onto my seat and even jumping out of my seat. I would watch this movie again. Its one of the best horror movies I have watched as I don't really like to watch horror movies as they all seem the same. This one had me holding on.

vispoep26 March 2017
Although we have seen the plot before, I would say it great for gore fanatics, but would add that it is a waste of time for anyone with an IQ above nine. In summary: excellent horror make-up does not save a stumbling movie with an unoriginal story and amateur styling. I could not wait for it to finish.
