Until recently, Spectrum accounted for 20 percent of Disney’s linear-television reach. The Charter video provider now represents exactly zero percent of the reach for eight Disney cable channels: Baby TV, Disney Junior, Disney Xd, Freeform, Fxm, Fxx, Nat Geo Wild, and Nat Geo Mundo.
Their dropped carriage on a major player may be a death sentence for the channels. And Disney could just be first at the gallows.
Carriage (cable) and retransmission (broadcast) deals, in which an MVPD (Multichannel Video Programming Distributor) or virtual MVPD (vMVPD) pay a channel provider for the rights to include their networks in a customer’s video package, do not all come up for renewal at once. Spectrum v. Disney may have set precedent like a court case; going forward, why would any cable company continue to pay Disney for those seemingly disposable eight channels?

'90s Nicktoons were a special era of animation. Shows like "Rugrats," "The Wild Thornberries," and "Doug" offered colorful, funny stories for kids, but if you watched them long enough, they also occasionally told heartfelt stories with a purpose. Few of those sincere stories have held a place in viewers' hearts and minds decades later quite like "Arnold's Christmas," the "Hey Arnold" holiday special that shared the heartbreaking backstory of one of its characters.
"Arnold's Christmas" aired during the show's first season in 1996, and a simple plot about a Secret Santa gift exchange gave way to one of the series' most emotional...

On Aug. 5, Comedy Central announced a reboot to the classic 1991 cartoon The Ren & Stimpy Show. The show’s initial airing, as one of the three original Nicktoons (alongside Doug and Rugrats), was a milestone in cartoon television history, with its purposely crude yet dynamic visuals and heavily exaggerated animation and aesthetics. It also had a deeply complicated run. Ren & Stimpy was controversial both in public and behind the scenes and its sordid history includes creator John Kricfalusi’s inability to complete episodes on time, episodes Nick edited down or refused to air, and the criticisms of the show’s most disturbing aspects. Nevertheless the show was able to cement itself with a passionate, dedicated cult following.
That sordid history, however, reached an impassable point in 2018 when Buzzfeed reported a grotesque expose on Kricfalusi, and his grooming and dating of a 16-year-old girl during the show’s production. Before this point,...

Happy, happy, joy, joy? Eh sure, why not: happy, happy, joy, joy!
Comedy Central today announced that it is rebooting iconic ‘90s animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show. Details are scarce on what exactly a rebooted Ren & Stimpy Show will entail, but Comedy Central describes it as a “reimagination” with a new creative team.
“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” said Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group. “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head, and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”
The Ren & Stimpy Show first premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991. As created and run by John Kricfalusi, the show was far more controversial and edgy than the network’s usual fare.

Even if parents are going batty trying to keep their little ones entertained while cooped up at home during this pandemic, they’re not necessarily plunking the kids in front of the TV — not linear TV at least. Meanwhile, certain streaming services are seeing a lift in interest, underscoring the next generation’s shift in television viewing habits.
For the week of March 23-29, viewership of ad-supported kids’ linear cable networks — a group that includes Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney Xd and others — slid 3% from the comparable week in March 2019, according to Bernstein research analysts, citing Nielsen figures. And that year-over-year decline actually marks a major improvement: prior to shelter-in-place measures being implemented, weekly viewership of those channels among 2- to 11-year-olds had been plummeting an average of 25% since the start of 2020.
“Even though the rate of decline significantly decelerated, it’s still in negative territory even though time available in...

Creator Joe Murray answered some of our questions about the imminent Rocko revival movie.
Over twenty years since its last episode, the Nicktoons’ classic Rocko’s Modern Life will return to Netflix with the revival movie, Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling. We’ve seen the movie and it’s awesome. It looks and sounds just like it did in the old days but, as creator Joe Murray told us via email, he didn’t want to bring Rocko back just to retread old ground:
“The story that I came up with showed that we could do something interesting. At first, I didn’t know if we could add to the Rocko legacy. I didn’t want to do a reboot or one-off that was a watered-down version of Rocko. I wanted it to push it further with the characters and the story.”

Chance The Rapper isn’t single anymore. In fact, he’s so married that he would never entertain a side chick — because he’s married, and it’s a happy marriage, with a strong foundation that’s built on God, and the relationship was etched in cosmic stone from the moment the two lovers met. He would very much like you to know that. At 22-songs and 77 minutes, Chance’s “debut” album The Big Day is a modern monument to matrimony.

Some folks are chomping at the bit to see a Nicktoons movie that would integrate the lot of them, and there’s not a lot of reasons why it couldn’t happen. There’s no real way to know whether or not Joe Murray’s words on Facebook are real or are being said to throw people off the scent, but the truth of the matter is that people are likely going to be divided on the matter until it finally gets decided. Some folks would be for it obviously as they want to see a bit of the past they remember growing up

Well, finally. After 13 years of talk, rumor has it Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan will finally be reprising their roles in the third installment of MGM’s “Shanghai Noon” comedy series, “Shanghai Dawn,” but this time, it will be helmed by “Napoleon Dynamite” director Jared Hess.

If you aren’t familiar, the “Shanghai” films are a modern, buddy-pic combo plate of Western meets Kung-Fu movie; in the first, Chon Wang (Jackie Chan), an Imperial guard, trails the captors of a Chinese princess to Nevada with the intention to save her, there meeting his cowboy outlaw partner Roy O’Bannon, (Owen Wilson) who helps him do just that. In the second installment, 2003’s “Shanghai Knights,” the duo bring their shenanigans to London to seek revenge for the murder of Chon’s estranged father.

If you’ve ever wondered where writer-director Jared Hess came up with idea for his debut feature film, 2004’s deadpan cult comedy “Napoleon Dynamite,” Hess’s 2002 short film “Peluca” holds the answer. Hess shot the nearly nine-minute short for an assignment at Brigham Young University and premiered it the following year at the Slamdance Film Festival.
Watch: New Trailer For the Jared Hess Comedy ‘Masterminds’
Shot on black and white 16mm film, the short stars Jon Heder as “Seth,” who is Napoleon Dynamite to a T, just with a different name. Hess shot the short in his hometown of Preston, Idaho over the course of just two days, shooting at many of the same locations seen in the feature film, like the local high school and thrift store. The title “Peluca,” the spanish word for wig, refers to a wig Seth and his friends Giel and Pedro purchase in the short.
