A prequel to Betrayals & Bullets: Hard Retribution (2012) initially entered pre-production in early 2013 while Inviting the Demons (2013) was still in post-production, but creative differences led to the movie falling apart at the time. Although the story has been radically changed for what has become The Dame, a lot of scenes and characters were lifted from the original 2013 screenplay draft.
The movie was heavily inspired by two particular motion pictures: Brick (2005) and Killing Them Softly (2012). The script also pays homage to movies like Sin City (2005), Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014), and Alphaville (1965), among others.
When confronted by a mugger, Dwight says "No, you give ME money." This is a homage to Charles Bronson, who said these exact words to a mugger in real life.
In post-production, much thought was given to the title. The movie is split into two individual segments, "The Dame" and "The Package," and the title was at one point going to simply be "Betrayals & Bullets" to reflect the omnibus structure. However, with the ramifications of "The Dame" being felt throughout the movie, it was chosen as the subtitle.
During filming, director/actor/producer Callum Knox was recovering from plantar fasciitis. A few days before principal photography began, Callum even had a cortisone injection in his foot which temporarily limited his mobility. Because of the condition, Callum was unable to run on-screen, and this is why his walk looks strange at times.
