Handsome Ben Falkner, a young amateur star in The Brokenwood Theatre Society's Hamlet production, collapses on stage, from a poisoned prop. Mike Shepherd, who sleepily attended, sets his team on numerous potential suspects, including his friend Jared, who is promoted to the title part. D.C. Breen looks into the loony loner who supplied the virtually unguarded poison. Director Ralph, the local mailman, is consumed by Shakespearean ambition and may want revenge for Ben dumping his spoiled daughter Juliet, a misbehaving untalented actress. The cast and crew includes various people with smouldering jealousy, ambitions, scorned desire and other secrets.
