Spoilers and leaks are common in superhero media, usually from unofficial sources, and easy to brush off. However, it’s rare to have the next MCU villain spoiled by a McDonald’s toy.
That’s exactly what happened with a Happy Meal promotion, giving us a sneak peek at Diamondback for the upcoming ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’ The packaging names the character “Cascavel,” Portuguese for Rattlesnake, hinting at their MCU version. The toy looks like the Marvel Comics villain, with the same hair color and a black and purple outfit.

Following closing night festival screenings at Toronto and BFI Flare, director Justin Kelly’s Jt LeRoy opens in select Us cinemas, on demand and digital this Friday 26th April 2019. The compelling film chronicles the fascinating real life events that saw Savannah Knoop take on the public persona of celebrated author Jt Leroy, who was eventually revealed to be the creation and nom de plume of writer Laura Albert.
Whereas the 2016 documentary Author: The Jt Leroy Story focused largely on Albert, Kelly’s Jt LeRoy is based on the memoir Girl Boy Girl: How I Became Jt LeRoy by Savannah Knoop, who also co-wrote the screenplay, and recounts how events unfolded largely from their perspective. The film stars Laura Dern as Laura Albert and Kristen Stewart as Savannah Knoop, while the cast also features Courtney Love, Jim Sturgess and Diane Kruger.
James Kleinmann spoke exclusively to Justin Kelly and Savannah Knoop for HeyUGuys.

Premiering last fall at the Toronto International Film Festival, J.T. Leroy (then titled Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy) tells the true story as captured in Savannah Knoop’s 2008 memoir Girl Boy Girl: How I Became Jt LeRoy. Starring Kristen Stewart as the author who conned her way through the literary world under the titular fake persona, the film is directed by Justin Kelly (I Am Michael). Also starring Laura Dern, Jim Sturgess, Courtney Love, and Diane Kruger, the film will now arrive later this month and now the first trailer has landed.
Christopher Schobert praised Stewart, saying in his review, “It’s a stunning performance, one matched by the wondrous Laura Dern as Laura Albert, the author who created LeRoy and wrote his works. Jeremiah is bouncy and pleasing, if overfamiliar and never as insightful as one would hope. That is not necessarily the fault of director Justin Kelly, who co-wrote the film with Koop herself.

Kristen Stewart’s young career is peppered with highs–most notably, Olivier Assayas’s Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper–but the actress has never been more natural, more unaffected, or as legitimately fascinating onscreen as she is in Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy. As Savannah Koop, the infamous “body” of nonexistent author Jt LeRoy, Stewart is vulnerable, funny, and wounded. Yet she’s also nonchalantly charismatic, showing how and why the sight of the quiet, bewigged LeRoy was so utterly enticing to a world craving for mystery.

Justin Kelly’s “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” the closing-night film at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, occupies a difficult slot at the mammoth festival. Tiff’s closing-night films typically don’t go on to enjoy significant commercial or critical success, more often destined for quick obscurity in the U.S. market.
Last year’s closing film, for instance, was the French comedy “C’est La Vie!” Before that, “The Edge of Seventeen” and “Mr. Right” at least made a little noise at the box office, “A Little Chaos” and “Life of Crime” less so.
But there’s good news and bad news for “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” which stars Laura Dern and Kristen Stewart and had its first press screening on Monday in advance of Saturday’s closing-night gala.

“Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy” is not the first movie to star indie darlings Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern, but it is the first one to feature them sharing the screen together. The two actresses appeared in different segments of Kelly Reichardt’s 2016 drama “Certain Women,” which became the filmmaker’s highest grossing movie to date thanks to their star power. Now Dern and Stewart have teamed up for “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” world premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
“Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy” is the latest from writer-director Justin Kelly, the filmmaker behind “King Cobra” and “I Am Michael.” The film is a true story drama featuring Dern as Laura Albert, who became a literary sensation under the name Jt Leroy. Albert recruited her sister-in-law Savannah Knoop (Stewart) to play Leroy in public appearances.
The film is based on Knoop’s 2008 tell-all memoir “Girl Boy Girl: How I Became Jt Leroy.

It’s not always a great sign with a movie goes straight to digital, but nevertheless “Welcome The Stranger” has us intrigued. It’s not just the compelling leading trio that has caught our attention, but the film’s trailer — you’re not mishearing things, there is purposefully no dialogue, just the soundtrack.
Directed by Justin Kelly (“King Cobra,” “I Am Michael“), and starring Abbey Lee, Caleb Landry Jones and Riley Keough, the film is an eerie story about siblings, surreal visions and paranoia.

It’s clear from the start that something is not quite right in this first trailer for Justin Kelly’s (“I Am Michael,” “King Cobra”) latest outing, “Welcome the Stranger,” a twisty (and twisted) new thriller about the limits of family bonding. The film stars Caleb Landry Jones and Abbey Lee as estranged siblings who reunite at a remote country home, before everything devolves into an unsettling and dark drama in which nothing is actually as it seems. Added bonus: Riley Keough as Jones’ girlfriend, intriguingly billed as “strange.” Strange, how?
Per the film’s official synopsis, “Alice arrives unannounced at her estranged brother Ethan’s house in an attempt to reconcile, but bizarre visions, the return of his strange girlfriend, and Alice’s paranoia and suspicion force the siblings to cling onto reality amidst mysterious circumstances.”

John Travolta stars in Gotti, for which a new trailer has just been released
“Let me tell you, New York City is the greatest city in the world. I was a kid in these streets and I made it the top,” John Travolta says as John Gotti in the trailer for the upcoming biopic Gotti. If anyone could claim “My Way” as a theme song it was the Dapper Don of the Gambino Crime Family.
Gotti “made his bones doing a piece of work for Don Carlo Gambino,” the trailer tells us. From that day on, the Teflon Don was a man on the rise. Gotti has a similar look to Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. The film will tell Gotti’s story over three decades, but will largely focus on the years after he was made boss by killing the top guy and then assuming his place.

It’s no secret James Franco is one of the most hate-him-or-love-him actors working in Hollywood. But even those who consider themselves fans don’t always show up to the countless indies he makes in any given year, from “Memoria” to “The Adderall Diaries,” “King Cobra” and directorial efforts “In Dubious Battle” and “The Sound and the Fury.” At this point there’s no denying Franco has talent, but he takes on so many middling projects and appears in what seems like everything to the point that it can be hard to remember why you loved him in the first place.
Fortunately, Franco looks like he’s ready to remind us why he belongs in the business. It’s happened before — his Oscar-nomianted lead performance in “127 Hours,” his go-for-broke turn in “Spring Breakers” and...

“I’ve always been proud of who I am -- I came out to my family when I was 17 -- but the movie, that process did awaken something in me,” Charlie Carver, who came out publicly last January, tells Et about making I Am Michael, a new biopic about Michael Glatze, a prominent gay activist who renounced his homosexuality and turned to religion. Directed by Justin Kelly (King Cobra) and based on Benoit Denizet-Lewis' New York Times Magazine article “My Ex-Gay Friend,” the new film sees Carver portraying Tyler, a college student involved in a throuple with Michael (James Franco) and Bennett (Zachary Quinto).

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

James Franco is a lot of things, but consistent is not one of them. His performances, ranging from great to good to not-so-excellent, can be found in everything from blockbusters to indie projects, art displays to local book stores, college lectures and more intimate squares. His talents are widespread, certainly, if not always found. If festival reviews, as well as this first trailer, for the Lgbt drama I Am Michael provide the right indication, however, we might be looking at one of the highest points in Franco’s career to date.
Based on the true story of Michael Glatze (Franco), a prominent gay-rights activist and spokesperson for the homosexual community who was abruptly and shockingly “saved” by Christianity, I Am Michael made its premiere back at Sundance 2015. Beyond a few other festival appearances that year, however, it has yet to be seen by a wide audience. That changes on January 27th though,...

I Am Michael tells a dramatized version of the true story of a man named Michael Glatze, who renounced his homosexuality after discovering religion. James Franco stars, along with Zachary Quinto as his boyfriend, and a cast including Emma Roberts, Daryl Hannah, Charlie Carver and Leven Rambin. In 2007, Bryan Kocis, gay pornography director and founder of Cobra Films, was murdered in his home by Joseph Kerekes and Harlow Cuadra over a contractual dispute involving porn actor Sean Paul Lockhart, aka Brent Corrigan. Now, that story has been turned into the feature film “King Cobra,” starring Garrett Clayton (“The Fosters”) as Lockhart and Christian Slater (“Mr. Robot”) as “Stephen,” a pseudonym for Kocis.

“Moonlight” (A24) remains the top story. Barry Jenkins’ best-reviewed film of the year expanded to a range of big city theaters this week. The movie continued as the top 2016 specialized performer in head to head comparisons this year. This performance is more than enough to buttress its elevated awards expectations, as critics groups start voting in in a few weeks.
But it wasn’t the only successful widened release. Subtitled film “The Handmaiden” (Magnolia) continued to impress, as it added far more than the usual number of second week theaters. It’s playing to both Korean-American and conventional arthouse audiences.
On a Halloween-adjacent weekend that seemed to scare off most distributors, two rock-related documentaries braved the competition. Jim Jarmusch’s “Gimme Danger,” with an initial conventional theater release, scored well, while “Oasis: Supersonic” (A24) mostly went for initial one-night events before adding streaming as its main venue.

Another week, another new James Franco film. Following up Goat and King Cobra, his next project is Burn Country (formerly titled The Fixer), a winner a this year’s Tribeca Film Festival for Best Actor in a U.S. Narrative Feature Film. Considering Franco, along with Melissa Leo and Rachel Brosnahan, make up the supporting ensemble, the award went to Dominic Rains.
He plays Osman, a reporter at a local newspaper in Northern California who uncovers a mystery in his new location. Ahead of a release this December, the first trailer and poster has now arrived, which sell an intense set-up and featuring intriguing, dark imagery. The reviews out of Tribeca were mostly positive, so hopefully this is one to seek out later this year. Check out the trailer and poster below.

In “Burn Country,” Rains portrays Osman, an Afghan journalist who leaves behind his life as a fixer for Western reporters and moves to a small town in Northern California where he takes a job with a local newspaper. The slumbering specialized world woke up this weekend.
Critically acclaimed “Moonlight” (A24) pulled a sensational response far beyond its already high expectations. But it wasn’t the only positive story: “The Handmaiden” (Magnolia) beat the odds against subtitled films. And Michael Moore’s election special “Trumpland” (Dog Eat Dog) scored strong numbers in theaters along with its iTunes debut.
Openers
“Moonlight” (A24) – Metacritic: 99; Festivals include: Telluride, Toronto, New York 2016
$413,175 in 4 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $103,685
In a lackluster year at the specialty box office, even a $30,000 initial platform per theater average for Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” would have looked great. Instead, with a rare 99 Metacritic score, ahead of any other film this year, the opening PTA of $103,685 is sky high and among the top initial results ever.
How good is it? It is second only to “The Revenant” (which opened on Christmas weekend) among releases over the last two years.

King Cobra is an erotic, venomous thriller loaded with cheesy porn-actor charm and equally perverse darkness. Only a true story could be this twisted, and only in the world of sleaziness and fame could egos rationalize murder as a way to beat the competition. In fact, writer/director Justin Kelly creates more believable motivations for Joe Kerekes and Harlow Cuadra than their real accounts detail. Kelly’s sinful slice of “twink” exploitation somehow creates a more believable scenario than reality by under-exaggerating where cinema typically exploits. The Viper cars, trademarked names, predatory advances – welcome to the flashy, ferocious underworld of sex, lies and videotapes.
Garrett Clayton stars as Sean Paul Lockhart Aka Brent Corrigan, a young phenom pornstar who becomes an overnight sensation thanks to Cobra Video. He lives with “King Cobra” himself – Stephen (Christian Slater) – who writes and directs twink-centric videos from his suburban abode. On the other side...

The superficial argument hanging over any discussion of Justin Kelly’s “King Cobra” will sadly, wastefully, frustratingly fall within the orbit of classification: is the film, a true crime yarn that unfolds against a porn industry backdrop, itself an example of pornography? A pruder audience member may respond in the affirmative, citing its graphic (but not explicit) sex scenes, but this is a pretty phony baloney idea. Neither Kelly nor “King Cobra” actually care about the sex; they’re both more interested in the abstract, with the people involved in the sex, and the interpersonal dramas that spark between them and eventually lead to murder most foul.

Two incredible new films have arrived: Moonlight and The Handmaiden. I'd argue the latter is Park Chan Wook's best film yet. You absolutely must not miss either of them though I wish distributors would stop releasing films that can appeal to the same audience at the same time (I mean the last few weeks haven't had ravishingly artistic auteur films with queer storylines, so why two at once?). I wrote up a little snippet on The Handmaiden at Towleroad and we've previously reviewed Moonlight tag team style right here. I believe that both plan to expand into more cities next weekend. Both coasts also get an Icelandic mystery called Autumn Lights and NYC gets the indie porn drama King Cobra (with Christian Slater, James Franco and more)

King Cobra director Justin Kelly talks about his film based on Brent Corrigan’s career and how far Franco, who plays a porn producer, was willing to go on screen
“I like to think that I’m gay in my art and straight in my life,” James Franco said to himself in an article for FourTwoNine magazine he wrote titled, The Straight James Franco Talks to the Gay James Franco. “Although, I’m also gay in my life up to the point of intercourse, and then you could say I’m straight.”
Franco toying with the public’s perception of his sexuality is nothing new. He’s made his fascination with gay culture known not just in interviews (in April, he told New York Magazine that he considers himself “a little gay” – even if he doesn’t sleep with other men), but also in his work. Four new wide releases this weekend should help propel the top twelve over $100 million this weekend and, for the first time in six weeks, show improvement over the same weekend last year. This weekend is also going big with sequels, delivering three of them including Tom Cruise returning as the title star in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, the horror sequel Ouija: Origin of Evil and Tyler Perry's latest outing as Madea in Boo! A Madea Halloween. Fox will also be releasing the ensemble comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses and Pure Flix is releasing the faith-based, Columbine drama I'm Not Ashamed into just over 500 theaters. Overall the weekend top twelve should come in around $100-105 million if all goes as forecasted. At the top, it would be a nice win for Paramount should they land a #1 finish with Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. The studio has had a rough go this year,...

The 5th Annual Key West Film Festival has announced its official 2016 lineup, including the opening night film, “20th Century Women,” directed by Mike Mills and starring Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup. As part of the festival’s signature Critics Focus program, MTV’s Chief Film Critic Amy Nicholson will present and lead a conversation around the film, alongside David Fear, Senior Film/TV Editor of Rolling Stone.
Director of Programming Michael Tuckman said of Nicholson’s pick, “I could not be more thrilled with Amy Nicholson’s choice of ’20th Century Women’ to kick off our 5th Anniversary edition of festival. Annette Bening’s performance is Oscar-deserving and the rich depth of the balance of the leading cast is Altman-esque in its quality. Amy’s discussion after the film will bring a cunning critic’s eye to this fabulous film for audiences.”

Movies don’t get much juicier, funnier, creepier, sadder, or smarter than writer-director Justin Kelly‘s “King Cobra,” which dramatizes a real-life murder case set in the world of gay porn. Kelly’s work is outstanding, as he manages to control the most seemingly uncontrollable material while exploring many different facets of the case. “King Cobra” is as in-your-face explicit a gay movie as has ever been made with recognizable male actors, including producer James Franco, who predictably takes the lion’s share of the most physical sex scenes, and Christian Slater. Kelly (“I Am Michael”) sets up two separate stories and cuts back.

If you missed the recent ’90s tribute episode of “Mr. Robot,” you can still hear all about it — and so much more — in this SAG-aftra Foundation interview with Christian Slater, moderated by Indiewire’s own Michael Schneider.
In the 35-minute taping, Slater covers everything from his Comic-Con 2015 live reading with the cast of the FX comedy hit “Archer,” to one of his newest projects, a based-on-true-events film titled “King Cobra,” in which he stars alongside James Franco as a dark, obsessive, gay porn producer.
[Spoilers for “Mr. Robot” Seasons 1 and 2 below.]
After the screening of the 90s tribute episode, which includes a cameo from Alf (yes, the Alf), Slater told the audience, “It was [an episode] we were very excited to do. But we thought, even while we were filming that particular episode, people are either going to enjoy this or we’re going to go straight to hell — that was sort of the vibe while we were doing it.

★★★★☆ Justin Kelly's King Cobra bravely re-tells the true story of gay porn icon Brent Corrigan (real name Sean Lockhart) and is by no means one for the faint-hearted. The mere mention of the word 'pornography' incites, more often than not, a knee-jerk reaction of sneering judgement and condescension but to dismiss this brash, ballsy, brazen film at face value as tawdry smut would be a mistake. Beneath the veneer of fake tan, rippling muscles and feigned ecstasy lies a striking amount of heart, soul and sincerity of emotion.

Love him or loathe him, James Franco can't ever be accused of making boring choices. From his grill-tastic turn in Harmony Korine's phenomenal Spring Breakers to a recurring role on General Hospital -- after becoming an A-list star -- the Oscar-nominated actor has never shied away from going against the grain of mainstream stardom. So it's no surprise that Franco not only stars in but produced the forthcoming gay porn drama King Cobra. The film centers on the rise of gay porn mega-star Brent Corrigan (born Sean Lockhart) and his involvement in the 2007 murder trial of Harlow Cuadra and Joseph Kerekes, two Virginia Beach escorts who were accused (and eventually convicted) of murdering Corrigan's mentor/exploiter, Cobra Video founder Bryan Kocis. Given how taboo the subject of gay porn remains in mainstream filmmaking, it's pretty striking to see a film devoted to the subject. Especially one that stars bold-faced names like Franco,...

And he's again collaborating with filmmaker Justin Kelly, who is directing from his own script. Before anyone gets triggered, let me forewarn you that King Cobra is a true story centered around gay porn. That story seems absolutely insane as it features two porn moguls going to war over one man: Brent Corrigan. Here's the official description:
Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, King Cobra is a deliciously dark, twisted plunge into the behind-the-scenes world of the pornography industry. It’s 2006, YouTube is in its infancy, and internet porn is still behind a paywall. Taking the stage name Brent Corrigan, a fresh-faced, wannabe adult video performer (Garrett Clayton) is molded into a star by Stephen (Christian Slater), a closeted gay porn mogul who runs the skin flick empire Cobra Video from his seemingly ordinary suburban home. But as Brent’s rise and demands for more money put him at odds with his boss, he also attracts the attention of a rival producer (James Franco) and...
