Even in a generally well-liked horror franchise like Slumber Party Massacre, there is still that one entry that fans do not rally around as much as others. And among the four films produced so far, Sally Mattison’s Slumber Party Massacre III is routinely slept on. However, this series’ third depiction of a sleepover gone terribly awry not only brings back the harshness of the original film, it also delivers an unusual perspective.
The first slasher trend had all but ended by 1990, but unseasonableness has never stopped a producer like Roger Corman. And as with the previous Slumber Party Massacre films, the third was directed and written by women, including a script by the late Catherine Cyran. This rushed, micro-budget film works from the same familiar prompt; a male assailant stalks and kills hapless, scantily clad women as they gather for what should have been a night of fun and play.

Always found it quite ironic that when Image Comics was founded, its aim was to out-Marvel Marvel. Sure, there was the important issue of creators rights and giving people more creative freedom, but the main idea was to earn the money Marvel was earning and put more of it into the pockets of the writers and artists. it was always for me more a business decision than anything else. Then, somewhere along the way, Image became the place to go if you had a unique idea, a specific vision. Prior to that, Dark Horse Comics had been the go to place, but as they went all-in on licensing publishing, Image became the place to take new ideas. They still are. Image are easily the best publisher in terms of the range of genres and of creators, and...

Considering Fantastic Fest 2021 is this writer’s first time back at an in-person festival since Sundance 2020, I’m very excited (and a teeny bit nervous) about getting to spend a whole week indulging in movies from all over the world once again. Later this week, Fantastic Fest will be kicking off on Thursday, and will continue running in-person through September 30th (and the Ff Virtual Fest will begin the very same day).
And even though I’m always pumped for Fantastic Fest’s entire genre-spanning programming slate, there are a handful of films that have already caught my eye, and I thought I’d go ahead and preview 13 titles that I’m incredibly psyched to see as a horror and sci-fi fan. Also, I just wanted to make a note: I didn’t include films that Daily Dead has already covered at previous festivals. Not that they’re not worthy,...

Embankment Films has sold British rights to Lionsgate U.K. for romantic drama “Summerland,” starring Gemma Arterton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Variety has been given the exclusive first-look image for the film, which has just wrapped production.
The pic is the feature debut of British playwright Jessica Swale, who won an Olivier Award for her play “Nell Gwynn,” in which Arterton and Mbatha-Raw both starred. Swale won BAFTA’s Jj Screenwriting Bursary for “Summerland” in 2012.
The film centers on fiercely independent writer Alice (Arterton) who “secludes herself in her clifftop study, debunking myths using science to disprove the existence of magic,” according to a statement.
When a spirited young man, Frank, an evacuee from the London Blitz, is placed in her care, “his innocence and curiosity awaken Alice’s buried emotions… perhaps magic really does exist.”
The cast includes Penelope Wilton (“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”) and Tom Courtenay (“45 Years...

Exclusive: The King’s Speech and Wolf Hall financier Hindsight Media (previously known as Prescience) has splashed on rights to sci-fi movie spec Anima, I can reveal. The mid-six-figure deal is the UK outfit’s biggest single development acquisition to date. While plot details are being kept under wraps I understand the thriller follows a prisoner who is sentenced to solitary confinement on a remote asteroid.
Swedish directing duo Fredrik Akerstrom and Markus Kryler (pictured), known for directing hit video game Battlefield 1 are attached to direct the script from Steve Isles (The Possession Of David O’Reilly). Project is being pitched as in the vein of Moon and Ex Machina.
Hindsight Media CEO James Swarbrick (The Last Days On Mars) will produce alongside Water & Power Production’s Tom Miller (Aaaaaaaah!) as well as Jon Kanak (Slumber), who reps both the writer and the directors. The team is eying a fall production start.

Anyone who's gone through an episode of sleep paralysis knows how briefly terrifying it can be. You're seemingly fully conscious yet totally unable to move your limbs or any other part of your body, with hallucinations frequently involved as well. Fortunately, the creepy phenomenon generally lasts little more than a minute or two. Unfortunately, Slumber, Jonathan Hopkins' horror film "inspired by real events," lasts far longer.
Maggie Q (currently seen as a tough FBI agent on ABC's Designated Survivor) plays the central role of Alice, a doctor specializing in sleep disorders who's haunted by nightmares related to the sleepwalking death...
