Power Couple
I'm not sure anyone was asking for a Rick & Michonne road trip episode but it was well worth the (carnival) ride. Continuing with the trend of 2017 hopeful Walking Dead episodes, 'Say Yes' featured a whole bunch of guns and plenty of Richonne fan service.
More than any other episode, tonight sold me on the Rick & Michonne relationship. It wasn't the sex, or the sometimes sappy dialogue, it was the performances of Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira. Both of them were tremendous tonight. The look on Michonne's face when she thinks Rick is being eaten alive says it all. As audience members, we know Rick isn't dying at some random carnival after all that's been built up this season, but Michonne doesn't know that. For her it was a mixture of shock, heartbreak, and devastation before she realized Rick had survived after all.
As much fun as I had watching them one-up each other with the number of walkers they killed, it was the conversation they had at the end of the trip that really stuck with me. What happens after Negan? Does this episode teasing Rick's end mean that Michonne will somehow be the one to bite the bullet during the war against the Saviors? Saying I would be stunned is definitely an understatement. Without Maggie & Glenn (who got a well-deserved shout out tonight) they are certainly the power couple on the show. But just when I'm starting to really enjoy their company is exactly the time to pull the rug out from underneath them.
Aside from the walker fix at the carnival and a brief visit to the Junkyard, there wasn't much going on. We got more unnecessary sass from Rosita and out-of-place awkward humor from Tara. I hate to say it, but I'm so tired of them both. Rosita trying to team up with Sasha now, really? Aren't we done with group members trying to branch off and do their own thing? Come on now, guys.
In all, 'Say Yes' was The Walking Dead's best attempt at a road-trip date comedy. Most of it worked, including a ton of carnival walker fun, with only a few Tara & Rosita moments to bring down the mood. Hopefully, once we inevitably make a trip to Oceanside to steal some guns, the March to War can continue.
