Lorton Entertainment, whose credits include documentaries, Asif Kapadia’s Cannes title “Diego Maradona” and Matt Smith’s Amazon Prime Video film “Rooney,” has launched a content fund.
The Lorton Media Fund, which will invest in drama and documentary across film and television, is a Jersey-based vehicle, which is administered by Oakbridge Fund Services (Jersey) Limited. It will be one of the largest private investment funds focused on U.K. content.
The company said that it has been able to “raise significant capital after a run of 17 hit films in the last six years alone.” Lordon’s credits also include a Boris Becker documentary that’s headed to the Cannes market, “Oasis: Supersonic” and “Bros: After the Screaming Stops.”
Lorton Entertainment was founded by CEO Julian Bird and a consortium of private financiers in 2016 with the abiding principle of bringing the strict discipline of the financial world into the film and television content sector.

A new documentary on tennis superstar Boris Becker is nearing completion and is set to be sold at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.
Alex Gibney, Oscar-winning director of “Taxi to the Dark Side” and John Battsek, producer of the Oscar-winning “One Day in September,” have had exclusive access to Becker since 2019 and have been documenting him from then until late April, when he was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for hiding assets and loans to avoid paying his debts.
The as-yet-untitled documentary aims to explore every aspect of the man who became a tennis sensation after winning the Wimbledon Championship at the age of just 17 and went on to win 49 career titles including six Grand Slams and an Olympic gold medal. Off court, Becker has had a tumultuous personal life. The film will also speak to major figures in his life, from family members to tennis greats John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg.

There are multiple moments during Oasis Knebworth 1996, the hugely entertaining documentary revisiting the Britpop legends’ most gargantuan concert, when present-day interviewees remark how lovely it was that the show occurred pre-iPhone, Facebook, etc. Yes, it is the “Not a cell phone in sight. Just people living in the moment” meme brought to life. And in this instance it’s hard to disagree. The audience was not littered with screens. There were no social media platforms overflowing with attendee gloating. Indeed, the Internet of 1996 was glitchy and unavailable to many. Ticket-purchasing involved waiting in long lines outside record stores or tying up the home phone line while waiting (impatiently) on hold.
As Oasis Knebworth 1996 vividly details, just getting to a concert like Knebworth was not easy. Even more difficult? Finding modern bands with enough popularity to headline such a location. Knebworth House was the domain of Monsters of Rock () like the Rolling Stones,...

It’s been nearly 12 years since Oasis last played live, but that hasn’t stopped the beloved U.K. band from burnishing its legacy with such projects as the 2016 documentary “Oasis: Supersonic.” That film began and ended with Oasis’ career-defining, box office record-breaking 1996 U.K. concerts in front of more than 250,000 people at Knebworth, which will now receive their own full documentary treatment this fall.
“Oasis Knebworth 1996” will arrive in theaters around the world on Sept. 23, with tickets going on sale on Aug. 10. Blessed with the full cooperation of Oasis’ famously feuding brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, who serve as executive producers, the project was directed by Jake Scott, who helmed the video for Oasis’ 1995 single “Morning Glory,” Scott previously directed memorable ‘90s rock videos such as R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts,” Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees” and Soundgarden’s “Fell on Black Days,” among many others.

Four high-impact boxers — Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns — will re-enter the limelight in Showtime docuseries The Kings.
The first of the show’s four episodes will premiere on Sunday, June 6, at 8Pm Et/Pt on linear and streaming, the ViacomCBS premium network announced.
Nicknamed the Four Kings during their remarkable, overlapping careers, the quartet contested nine championship fights among them from 1980 to 1989. Their distinct styles and vivid personalities helped spark a renaissance in the sport of boxing, which had endured a downturn after Muhammad Ali’s storybook run concluded.
The backdrop of the series is the 1980s, a go-go decade marked by pronounced socioeconomic and political upheaval in the U.S. as President Ronald Reagan left his mark.
Hagler died last month at age 66.

Here’s a Coldplay documentary so charming and sincere that it will make you feel bad about mocking the band’s music for the last 16 years. Mat Whitecross’ “Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams” is more than just a look inside the third-highest grossing concert tour in history, or an intimate portrait of one of the 21st century’s most successful rock bands; it’s also an infectiously upbeat biography of four blessed friends, who conquered the world on the strength of their belief in themselves and each other. In other words, this feature-length victory lap should be utterly insufferable from start to finish. It isn’t.

William John Paul “Liam” Gallagher. Even his name sounds like a supergroup—some kind of Frankenstein’s amalgam that fuses a continuum of British rock, glass-shattering volume, and a semi-lethal Twitter account. Lord knows he’s packed an entire band’s worth of swagger into one man. Onstage at New York City’s McKittrick Hotel last July for his first American performance as a solo artist, he assumes his trademark position, arms clasped behind his parka-covered torso, crouched in a perpetual stare-down with an audience. He’s flanked by a banner that spells out not his name, but might as well be: “Rock ‘N’ Roll.

Hitchcock/Truffaut (Kent Jones)
The world of cinematic discourse was a markedly place when François Truffaut interviewed Alfred Hitchcock Nowadays, high-profile filmmakers are talking about their craft whenever someone turns on a recorder, and few people doubt the greatness of this text’s main subject. This might explain why the decidedly old-fashioned degree to which Kent Jones’ documentary honors the book seems out-of-place. If you walk into a Karan Johar film expecting subtlety, the joke is on you. The director has made a successful, nearly 20-year career out of using his films as vehicles to showcase stunning places, gorgeous people, and grand emotions. His unabashed preference of style (often over substance) and lavishness over logic has come to define his brand of cinema, so much so that audiences not only let him get away with it, but even look forward to his inflated-in-every-way productions by now.

“Moonlight” (A24) remains the top story. Barry Jenkins’ best-reviewed film of the year expanded to a range of big city theaters this week. The movie continued as the top 2016 specialized performer in head to head comparisons this year. This performance is more than enough to buttress its elevated awards expectations, as critics groups start voting in in a few weeks.
But it wasn’t the only successful widened release. Subtitled film “The Handmaiden” (Magnolia) continued to impress, as it added far more than the usual number of second week theaters. It’s playing to both Korean-American and conventional arthouse audiences.
On a Halloween-adjacent weekend that seemed to scare off most distributors, two rock-related documentaries braved the competition. Jim Jarmusch’s “Gimme Danger,” with an initial conventional theater release, scored well, while “Oasis: Supersonic” (A24) mostly went for initial one-night events before adding streaming as its main venue.

Sony's Inferno experienced an opening weekend meltdown as the third film in the Robert Langdon series fell $10 million shy of expectations. As a result, and thanks to a strong second weekend hold, Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween scored a second weekend atop the box office, dropping just 41% from its opening weekend. Meanwhile, Disney and Marvel's Doctor Strange stormed the international box office. The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe opened in approximately half the overseas markets where it brought in an estimated $86 million ahead of its domestic release next weekend. With an estimated $16.67 million Boo! A Madea Halloween took the #1 spot at the weekend box office domestically for a second week in a row. The film's cume has now grown to $52 million as it fell just 41% in its second weekend, a spectacular performance following the film's $28.5 million opening last weekend. As noted in our weekend preview, Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection...

Steve Coogan’s tactless alter ego Alan Partridge is coming back to a screen near you in a new one-hour mockumentary titled “Alan Partridge’s Scissored Isle” for the streaming comedy channel Seeso.
In this new special Alan will head to the north of England, leaving behind his comfortable existence, for a personal journey of redemption. Per the synopsis, “With his Land Rover and his dog, he journeys into an unreported Britain inhabited by the very people he had offended to ask whether, in this once united kingdom, a ‘schasm’ has formed – a schism or chasm, between the haves and the have-nots (or haven’ts).”
The presenter will live among everyday people in hopes to understand them, see the world through their eyes and ultimately become a better citizen, man and more sought-after broadcaster.

Rock band Wilco recently released their tenth studio album titled “Schmilco” which includes the breezy tune “Someone to Lose.” The group shared the music video for the single, which happens to be a stunning claymation piece.
The clip was created by Joseph Baughman and features a griffin in a “Lorax”-looking field, a bride and groom dancing in and around a wedding cake and a scene that reminds us of King Kong’s Empire State Building moment.
The folksy song features an acoustic guitar and minimal drums with an electric guitar to jazz up the chorus. “Schmilco” is the band’s latest album since 2015’s surprise LP “Star Wars.” In an interview with Rolling Stone, frontman Jeff Tweedy described the album as “joyously negative.” Adding, “It’s sad in a lot of ways but not in any that reach a conclusion of doom or hopelessness. Twenty years after Oasis became the most popular British band since The Beatles, founding members Liam and Noel Gallagher agreed it was time for a documentary to tell their story. Getting the brothers to agree on literally anything else seems damn near impossible.
Indeed, one of the key takeaways from “Oasis: Supersonic” is that the Gallaghers, while complementing each other nearly perfectly as musicians, have as dysfunctional a relationship as any two people in the history of rock n’ roll. Not even “Supersonic’s” London premiere on October 4 could bring them together, as Noel was a no-show. To this day, director Mat Whitecross (“The Road to Guantanamo”) has never been in the same room with both brothers at the same time.

Pussy Riot has been fighting for what they believe in since 2011, protesting against Russian President Vladimir Putin and advocating for women’s and Lgbt rights, among other topics. The feminist punk rock group continues to send messages to the masses and their latest video, “Make America Great Again,” takes a dig at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
“Because You decide elections and if we get together, we could blow this shit up, take action and reverse this erosion of rights. Because f**k it,” reads the video’s caption.
Directed by Jonas Akerlund, the video stars Nadya Tolokno and envisions a world in which Trump wins the upcoming election. The clip begins with footage of the business mogul at rallies and people fighting, it then shows the singer being dragged into a police station where she’s branded as an “outsider” and “fat pig.”

Sony’s “Inferno” is getting a cold critical reception, but should have a cozy opening: The third “Da Vinci Code” adaptation from Ron Howard and Tom Hanks stands as the weekend’s only new wide release.
And however it fares, the $75 million production opened two weeks ago in international markets, where it earned over $100 million. (Both “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels & Demons” both did more than 70% of their business in foreign territories.)
Reviews aside, there’s reason to believe “Inferno” will perform well. International success provides some positive spin, Tom Hanks is coming off of “Sully,” and the film has credibility from fans of the Dan Brown novels and their adaptations. Finally, it’s positioned to benefit from an older segment of the moviegoing audience who isn’t particularly interested in Halloween.
Expectations are this will open to over $20 million, but not by much. That would be a big drop from “Angels & Demons,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
In one of the busier weekends of the month, two of the movies did better than I predicted and two did worse. The real winner of the weekend was Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, which did far better than anyone thought with an opening weekend of $28.5 million in just 2,260 theaters or $12,611 per theater. It ended up completely demolishing Tom Cruise’s action sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which opened in almost 1,500 more theaters, but at least that ended up around where I predicted with $22.9 million. Ouija: Origin of Evil came out slightly below my prediction to take third place with $14 million, while the Fox comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses bombed even worse than I expected with $5.5 million in 3,000 theaters.

Oliver Stone. That’s the filmmaker who should have been asked to chronicle the career of Oasis, the hugely successful, ever-combustible, now-departed kings of Britpop. Looking at the entirety of the band’s lifespan — from the early 1990s to break-up in 2008 — it’s hard not to notice the trademarks of Doors-era Stone: controversies, fisticuffs, conspiracies, bravery, insanity, ego, vulnerability, lust, and violence. In rock and roll, these are positives, and the joys that emanate from such feelings and behavior is certainly on display in Oasis: Supersonic, a Noel and Liam Gallagher-approved documentary. The band’s career, however, is not really the subject of the new documentary directed by Mat Whitecross and from the producers of Amy, Asif Kapadia’s Oscar-winning Amy Winehouse documentary. Instead, Supersonic is about the rise of the band, the period from birth to its two concerts (to 250,000 attendees) at Knebworth.

It’s one of the most beautiful and terrible facts about this sick sad world: Talent doesn’t get to choose a person, and a person doesn’t get to choose a talent. It’s a total crapshoot, a lottery that we all have to live with. Few things on Earth are as rewarding, as destructive, or as infinitely varied as the friction generated between the purity of divine inspiration and the pollution of its human host. Sometimes those independent forces are in perfect sync with each other, and we get the Beatles — other times it’s like the fates forgot to carry a number when they were sorting things out, and we get Oasis.

It is, perhaps, exactly how Noel would have written the script himself if he could go back and do it all over again. We start and end with Knebworth. The pinnacle. Imperial Oasis, before the wheels came off and they hurtled towards the ditch. Before band members departed, and the whole sorry saga became no […]

This fan pleaser of a documentary from director Mat Whitecross focuses almost exclusively on Oasis’ glory years – their sudden rise to fame, the release of their debut album and subsequent chart success, through to their legendary concert at Knebworth, where they played to a quarter of a million fans over two days. At that point, Supersonic resolutely concludes. The story of Oasis, as told here, is loaded with plenty of ups and very few downs. By cutting off before the band’s more turbulent years, Whitecross leaves his documentary lacking in dynamics. For the casual observer, then, Supersonic’s ‘rise and rise’ of Oasis has the potential to drag. However, this is an immensely enjoyable film, full of energy and packed with enough early footage, hilarious anecdotes and obscure recordings to make it invaluable to any fan. Supersonic kicks off with the aforementioned Knebworth performance in 1996, exhibiting a band at the height of their success.

Everyone knows "Wonderwall," but aside from that song, my knowledge of British rock group Oasis is extremely limited. (But man, remember "Champagne Supernova"?) The band, led by brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, gained a massive following in an incredibly short time back in the '90s before flaming out, and now there's a new documentary (appropriately called Supersonic, after their insanely popular album) that chronicles it all. This comes from the producers of Amy, the terrific, Oscar-winning doc about Amy Winehouse, and it reminds me a lot of that film both in form and in subject matter.
A24 is releasing the movie in U.S. theaters for a one-night only engagement on October 26, 2016, and you can watch the trailer below:

From director Mat Whitecross and the producers of Amy and Senna, the film tells the story of the meteoric rise, chaotic reign, and epic explosion of the 90s group whose enduring hits include the eponymous tune as well as “Champagne Supernova,” “Don’t Look Back In Anger” and “Wonderwall.” Check out the trailer above.
