Making the Worst Movie Ever Made

Hands: The Fate of 'Manos' (2015)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE expert and savior Benjamin Solovey is joined by cast members Tom Neyman, Diane Adelson, Jackey Raye Neyman Jones and photographer Anselm Spring as they discuss the production and history of the film. It's rather amazing how this film grew to be such a cult favorite that it got a Kickstarter campaign to get it remastered but it also managed to have a featurette like this done, which in turn got some surviving cast members back to discuss their work on the film.

Solovey has become the best known fan and historian of the film so he offers up a lot of great information on the production of the movie including various people who threw money at the project and he also gives us a look at a type of camera that was probably used. The most fascinating moments come from the cast as they talk about their memories of shooting the film and the various issues that came up throughout production. Of course, the highlight is them talking about the premiere of the movie where they were all so embarrassed. Fans of MANOS will certainly enjoy this 30 minute look at the making of the picture.

Enjoyable and informative retrospective documentary

Warning: Spoilers
This 30-minute documentary offers an affectionate and illuminating glimpse at the making of the notorious Grade Z horror anti-classic "Manos: The Hands of Fate." "Manos" was the only film made by insurance salesman Harold P. Warren, who convinced members of a community theater group he was involved in to participate in the movie in various capacities. Among the things we learn about this legendary turkey was that John Reynolds was wasted on LSD throughout the shooting, the ranch house was provided by a local judge, the wives were cast from a modeling agency, a lot of scenes were done in a single take, one woman dubbed the voices of all the female characters in post-production (child actress Jackey Neyman Jones was crushed when she found out that her voice had been dubbed by someone else), the script was very slight, Warren entered lead actress Diane Adelson in the Miss Texas beauty pageant as a means to promote the film, the same limousine was used to bring everyone to the premiere, and several cast and crew members managed to sneak out when said premiere proved to be a total disaster. Worth a watch for fans of this crummy clunker.
