Not bad, spoiled by a Alex.
kevinhaddow14 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Well made, some excellent set pieces but maybe too slow paced for some. The thing that really spoiled it though is Alex, the main character. He's a hateful, spiteful, self centered person and I spent most of the film hoping he'd be shot next. For example he refuses to allow a mother to rescue her child because he's in love with her, disconnects a radio when he finds out her husband is alive and then doesn't tell her he's alive, doesn't tell his father about his mother's funeral. He's a thoroughly unpleasant character so you feel no sympathy towards him. That's one of the main issues, we're supposed to empathise with the main star, even to a degree, but with Alex I ended up hating him.

Confused but intriguing
nickboldrini29 October 2019
This is a bit of a mixed genre film, part romance, part action thriller, and both parts are done well, and work ok togethor. But there is a feeling if it had picked one or the other, and gone for it, the result might have been better. The acting is good, the set piece action is well done, but the script is a bit all over the place. Intriguing, and worth a watch, but it doesn't completely work.

Ummm.
TogosDad29 July 2021
A bit disjointed. Too sentimental. Too drawn out (cut the first thirty minutes and the last thirty minutes, and you wouldn't miss much). No real sympathetic characters. Implausible premise. But it was exciting to watch.

Great production. Terrible story.
dforbes-253-8664167 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
While I enjoy complex protagonists with the foibles and issues of real humanity, the main character of this film is simply a terrible person and through the entire film I only wished for his failure. Other characters were barely one dimensional (such as his main "love interest" who gave no more than a minor protest about not being able to get her daughter in the face of massive disaster).

The story itself was somewhat nonsensical. Rain was the primary danger, yet not only did it affect people who seemingly shouldn't be affected, everyone seemed remarkably careless about it even when knowledgable.

The father setting up a Home Alone type situation is the power plant was absurd, not to mention that taking out the power plant from the inside was certainly unnecessary when just a couple of easily accessible transmission lines could be destroyed to the same effect.

Worst Central Character Ever!!
pete_ward-631244 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Wanted to enjoy this film and it has its moments - but, despite the excuse of having an angry father, Alex is the most repressed, odious, pathetic, unempathetic, bland, and selfish human ever to be a lead character!! Even when he discovers many years later that his father had secretly made him a beautifully hand-crafted guitar for Christmas, which he never gave Alex, he still remains insensitive to his father's anger-management problems! Not even showing half of one redeeming feature throughout the entire film!! This lack of character-realism virtuly renders the entire film a pointless exercise!

A very human disaster film
willcrabbe14 June 2021
The Unthinkable (Den blomsterdid nu kommer) is a low-budget, Swedish action/disaster film following the character Alex and his estranged father Björn who are forced to reconnect when the country falls under attack from an unknown entity.

This is really not the film the poster or the brief synopsis on Prime make it out to be but I guess they market it that way to try and entice more viewers. I'd advise that you do not go into this film expecting a typical action or disaster film as it's anything but.

For the most part, the film is really well shot and manages to generate a very atmospheric and moody tone complete with a great ambient score. The action set-pieces that do exist in the film are executed well and the effects are very good especially considering the budget the filmmakers had to work with.

As a side effect of the low budget and alluded to above, the film focusses mostly on the behaviour and reactions of the people caught up in the middle of all the confusion as opposed to the action itself - we mostly hear about things rather than witness them ourselves. It's a very human and personalised approach to the disaster genre, much like films like Cloverfield or Godzilla (2014).

The pace only really starts to pick up around the halfway mark and the first half of the film is so painfully slow that it will likely turn away impatient viewers or those who were expecting something different.

Really, this film could do with being about twenty minutes shorter (probably taken out of the first hour) to help with the pacing but the second half of the film and especially the ending is excellent.

Wait... what?
Jonassi12 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This must be the movie with the most "Wait... what?" moments that I have ever seen. Having followed the crowd funding campaign, viewed every behind the scenes clips and probably watched the trailer about 20 times (shivering with excitement and anticipation every time), I had really high hopes for this flick. When rave reviews later were starting to pour in, of course I had to go see it when it finally premiered!

In Sweden, we're not particularly spoiled with high quality movie productions. And in many ways this is a technical masterpiece, no doubt. There were numerous very realistic crashes, explosions and the overall CGI was great. The photography was stunning, from time to time, as was the soundtrack/sound design).

However... It. Doesn't. Make. Any. Sense. Whatsoever! The movie tries so hard to mix action with a bad attempt of a love story and at the same time tries to tell a story about a troubled kid growing up. What were they on when they wrote the script?

What I don't like: 1) The characters are unlikable and completely unbelievable. 2) The dialogue is laughable and makes you shudder in discomfort. (I'm sorry, fellow movie goers, that I laughed out loud where I'm pretty sure I wasn't supposed to...) 3) The strategies of the military, both the defense and the attackers are highly questionable, at best. 4) The editing... Just wow... won't even go there...

I don't really know where to start to try to explain the plot, but it boils down to something going down in Sweden. A goofball dad, who is the caretaker of an underground electrical hub, seems to be the only one knowing that something bad is happening. He skillfully predicts the enemies' moves and start building some steampunk weapons to defend the bunker. Meanwhile, the military stands completely oblivious, and are somehow quickly decimated into 5 remaining people in a bunker (they soon start shooting at each other(!) though, leaving only three...). The main character, who happens to be the son of the goofball caretaker, tries hard to fix stuff but ends up being nothing more than a complete idiot the whole movie through, and would gain from someone giving him a couple of "Get ahold of yourself!"-cuffs to make him come to his senses. In the end, when it suddenly stops, we see the face of... Putin(!) Come on guys, really!!?

I love that the Crazy Pictures collective came through with this crowd funded flick and have become a name in the international movie world. They totally deserve it, and therefore I honor them with 2 points for being technical genies. With this movie though, they try so hard (it's almost as if they had 25 writers) with being everything, that it ends up being just a Crazy Picture.

Can't wait for the american version!

Immensely impressive
Morten_526 August 2018
Considering the small budget of only $2 million, and the record-breaking crowdfunding, the production values in this feature debut are absolutely astounding. It's an example of incredible passion and commitment and proof of immense talent.

Two movies inside one
riverside-704-5960615 January 2022
This movie has left me speechles, and I have discussed it for whole day. It is two movies in one:catastrophy movie and family drama. Both are perfectly scripted, and each one adds to other.

The gloomy atmosphere of being attacked by unknown force is probably close what people felt during events such as Chernobyl or WTC attacks. It reminds me of Russian TV series Outpost I have watched recently.

Another aspect of a movie us a family drama. Every character is right, and yet, they can not get together in the most simplest form. And after some tragic events, who is to blame? What if I did this,or that...the questions echo until the very end.

To me,this is a masterpiece worth watching and discovering its subleties one by one.

Great first half
susaste17 July 2021
I absolutely loved the first part of the movie, it was captivating and beautiful. An interesting mix of genres. Had it continued the same way I would have rated it a 10. Unfortunately the last part is not so great. Still worth a watch in my opinion.

Warning: Spoiler
ankiii_dahl1 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Is the main character suppose to be a psychopath ? He doesent tell the woman he supposedly loves ( more like tries to possess) the her husband is alive and looking for her. His father yelles at him while growing up and therefore years later he wont let the father know about the funeral of a former loved one. He dont want "the love of his life" (#bs) to go save her daughter. And also: He never smiles once. Creepy creeper.

Also - never in any movie have I seen so many phones beeing tossed ( or allegedly: slammed)

And why on earth would a 4-5 year old girl run up to a strange man she's never seen and call him "dad" ?? (ridiculous)

Scenes that where great: dead crows falling from the sky. Car-crash on bridge and car-crash in the country-side.

Other than that: Give me my money back.

Excellent Swedish Film
thales-630453 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I would have given this a 10 if it wasn't for the incredibly annoying character Alexander. Oh how I wished he'd get bumped off quickly. The premise of a foreign invader hinting at the Russians was well done. I agree with a lot of reviewers about the ongoing love story which was distracting. The Scandinavians do like the idea of viruses or mind-bending hallucinogenic compounds in the rain. The car crashes are very good but not excellent as you could tell when a car was dropped by a crane but nevertheless better than cgi. I always like films that bump off everybody so you don't get comfortable with an actor or actress sailing through without a scratch. The Hurt Locker comes to mind with Guy Pearce's characters demise. A word of advice. Watch the end through the credits.

Tense but in the end it looks like fearmongering
schaumie-3508920 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
No doubt, it was a thrilling movie, driven by good acting and nice twists. We'll never get to know who definitely was responsible for the attacks, but last pictures seem to tell us, it was the Russians. In the end we saw a whitewashed picture with muslims and russians as suspects. That's to cheap for a movie which tries to take realistic steps, cause it's not objective. We don't get to know about motives of the attackers. We lose view on last survivors of the government. Suddenly all the attacks seem to be focused onto only one point in whole Sweden. The movie get's lost in the drama between father and son and by that it loses realism. There are great elements in the movie but the ending becomes to easy.

Incoherent mess..
Filmtaajm6 November 2018
First off: There are some good things with this move -ESPECIALLY since it´s low budget. Great photo, great soundtrack, and as a swede i really enjoyed the bold intention of making this kind of movie. Swedish movies are way too "vanilla" and 10 times out of 10 lack of originality. I had my hopes so high!

But it really sucked (sry). I got what Crazy Pictures wanted to do but the execution failed miserably. The best way i can describe it is that it was embarrassing incoherent! Imagine that the movie contains 300 different scenes (or whatever) and you hire 300 directors, divides the scenes amongst them and then put it all together. The result is very weird and confusing.

Even though i´m extremely disappointed, i really wish Crazy Pictures all the best -there´s a giant void in swedish film making that Crazy Picture could fill.

Great movie if you ignore the main character
jonas_ljungby5 November 2018
I have to separate the movie from the main character to give it a good score. If i needed to include him it will be a 1,2.

It felt sometimes that some part of the script was missing. The character is extremely bad, one of the worst character ever.

But the movie itself is amazing, story and effects. I hope we get more movies with crazy pictures. They are innovated.

I would like an apocalypse from you guys

The Unlikeable would be a better title...
shoppsi28 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously, how hard can it be to write likeable characters? These characters were so dismal, morose, and uncommunicative that I was rooting for the bad guys. The main father/son duo were so awful I didn't care at all what happened to them. They threw tantrums like 3 year olds and were seemingly incapable of speech, although the Dad at least had some clue as to what was going on. Of course, he couldn't talk about it. Such a dull movie, despite the action scenes.

A good foreign film with great SFX layered with a beautiful story of emotion and regret.
tkaine313 June 2019
(THE UNTHINKABLE) SWEDISH - ENGLISH SUBTITLES 🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠 Many people seemed angry with a story that unfolds throughout it's entirety but I felt their was immense value in the way it was told. None of the characters were perfect or blameless and in reality many will deflect or shutdown while hiding their true feelings even if the best and most obvious thing to do is speak up. The pace wasn't bad there were a few moments that slowed to a crawl but the story never halted or regressed. There was plenty of action sequences and the Efx were splendid along with acting and videography to boot. Giving this film anything below a 5 would absolutely be non-sense. Yes it may not be your cup of tea but this is a top rated production that comes together cohesively and lends credibility against those skeptics who doubt conspiracies. Russia is always listening and plotting.

Awful movie
spooknezz19 December 2018
The script of this movie competes with films like "The Room". It's a complete disaster.

I found myself wondering if this was all just a very expensive high school project.

On the plus side it's visually pleasing, but that's the only positive thing about it. A movie filled with missed opportunities and strike outs.

A decent movie
linneacadier9 July 2018
I went into the cinema expecting a movie about the diplomatic crisis, the problems which would occur when you're faced with a chaotic attack of this sort. Unfortunately, I got a bit more of a romance story than what I wanted. I am not saying it's a bad thing, for the movie itself is well made and planned, but just different from what I expected. The movie is intense and has for sure what I'd say is a typical Swedish movie with a lot of repressed emotions and anxiety, which reaches out to the viewer.

Whilst the movie in itself is good, there are several times where I find myself annoyed upon subtle "plotholes". As I am involved in the Swedish military, there were several times where I sat frustrated, knowing that several things the soldiers did in the movie would not occur in the same way in real life.

Overall, the movie was good. Despite it not being my type of movie, I won't let that alter my judgement, thus I set an eight.

Totally boring
royo56-642-45008225 February 2022
I have watched it for an hour now and can't take any more of it. I still don't know what's going on. The story is so slow it's unbelievable. The characters seem to be toxic or distant, there's nobody here to warm to. I can't watch any more of it.

Good, but shame about the ending
sniffynixon-3344323 December 2019
For the vast majority of this movie it is a dark, fascinating mystery thriller as we follow the destructive relationship between a father and son in rural Sweden against the backdrop of a foreign invasion. Going against Hollywood type the lead characters are dislikeable and driven by their own petty interests, despite the disasters falling all around them. This in itself makes The Unthinkable a different and compelling view. Right up until the last 20 minutes when the irresistible urge by the scriptwriters to close narrative loops leads to a series of ludicrous coincidences producing plot holes that Michael Bay would be proud of. This is a shame as it undermines what would otherwise be a terrific film.

An absolute mess of a film.
latinfineart8 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This could have been a good film, had it been even moderately comprehensible. The entire film we have no idea what's going on, we have no idea who's causing the attacks, we have no idea who the enemy is, we have no idea what the motivations are, and we have no idea about anything that's going on.

To compound those issues, the protagonist is one of the least likeable people in recent memories, he's kind of like some sort of semi autistic savant, with absolutely no people skills, no emotional development, and no redeeming qualities as a human being.

How are you supposed to wrap your mind around a character like that? This could have been a decent film, but it really needed some help with the writing and direction, and overall it just turned out to be a confusing mess, that was fairly hard to sit through.

Good, but heartbreaking!
sos_poseidon10 September 2021
Not sure why others are scoring this so low. I wasn't aware it was a low budget movie - you couldn't tell. It was beautifully done. The plot is shocking and the ending heartbreaking. I didn't score it a 10 because it could have been trimmed down and not as long.

ops-525351 June 2019
But to be a swedish armagedish thriller it aint bad, but the pace is extremely slow, and the source of danger is just as unknown like in the superbraggish movie ''it comes at night''.

its well worth a look but could have been 30 mins shorter playtime thinks the grumpy old man.

Bad Script, Bad acting. Overall Over hyped
danielmeren16 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Seeing the rating from fellow reviewers, I was expecting a decent movie. But the movie lacked goal. The script writers lost their way half way through the movie. Many of the scenes were like WTF. Like fellow friends, I too was laughing out loud where I shouldn't have. There are many scenes which are way too much of a coincidence. Some of the scenes cannot be accepted at all. They said it was the rain, then they go out and literally get soaked just putting on a face mask. And the government official? Seems the writers didn't have any more ideas for them. And come on, shooting each other for a piece of crap? They thought it would make the movie intense. But seriously it was so silly and off the course. So many scenes which didn't connect to the movie. I can go on and on about the different stupid scenes but will stop here. Yes, you can try and watch the movie but don't have high expectation else you may want to get inside the script and shoot the main actor right at the beginning.
