A Few good parts but the rest is really poor
atinder2 August 2017
The plot sounded really good, there were some good ideas here and there.

I enjoy some of the death Scene, ,as they were bit like Final Destination but not on the same level as those deaths.

The acting was a mixed bag , some scenes felt good and others felt forced.

Also some of the script was very bad in places, didn't help either.

Felt like half stuff was missing, seem a lot must of been cut.

The ending was very predicable, I knew from the start, that was going to happen.

The last scenes was hilarious bad! , it was meant to be shocking but it was shocking, as it was so badly done, even made me laugh out loud.

Horror flick for teenagers
deloudelouvain21 October 2017
Wish Upon is a typical teenager horror movie. High school kids will probably enjoy this flick more than adults. The only thing I liked about it was the different ways of dying in it. That was creative. But the problem is that there is no element of surprise at all. You all see it coming and that makes a movie without any suspense. And for a good horror movie you need a bit of suspense. The acting is what it is, just average. The story isn't that bad but with the lack of suspense it all feels a bit boring. I would probably have liked this movie more when I was sixteen but unfortunately (or not?) I'm not anymore. But there are way worse movies than this one that's for sure, but also way better, luckily!

Worth watching
mimicho33316 October 2019
Despite what everyone on the internet said about this movie, I watched it, and I'm glad I did. It's interesting, the idea behind the plot is a really good one, it resembles the monkey's paw story. It's a good movie, and if you are into the Final Destination saga you will sure like this; the death scenes are just as gory and awful as the ones you see in those movies. Plus, the main actress did a great job portraying her role. It's not the movie of the year, it gets cheesy during some scenes, but it's fine and worth a watch, maybe a re-watch even.

What a nightmare, and not in a good way.
edithp-3747630 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
If Tina Fey had have been brutally dropped on her head as a baby and decided to write a horror film, having never seen one before in her drooling, cabbaged life; it might look something like this. Who on earth is this movie aimed at? Is it supposed to be a spooky morality tale, or a dark high school comedy for girls? Oddly enough, in trying to be both, it succeeds in neither. The writer's conceit reeks through this whole effort, they obviously thought they were being exceptionally clever with little references to the multiverse and having Jerry O'Connell (from Sliders) making a cameo; but the whole thing just screams 'amateurish overindulgence'. The tone of the movie is all over the place and the protagonist is an absolute psycho, even before she starts murdering people with a Chinese box; just so she can be popular. She's also perhaps the densest person known to man, singularly failing to realise what's happening as everything she wishes for comes true; and bizarrely, not taking advantage of the situation when it does. We're supposed to believe that a box has sat in a bin on the street untouched for ten, or more years, in a town where her father scavenges the same bins seemingly several times a week? Instead of prattling on about physics she doesn't understand, perhaps the writer could have spent some of that excessive brainpower on filling this egregious plot hole, and all the others besides. The soundtrack is without a doubt the most inappropriate, awful racket that has ever graced a so-called horror movie; it's like Sofia Coppola was ingested by Lena Dunham in some bizarre satanic union, and this music was the accidental result. I am very skeptical that this film has gotten so many nine and ten star reviews on this site - something is very rotten in the state of Denmark. I expect with Halloween coming up, we'll see a truer picture of how this movie is received as more and more people have the misfortune to actually watch it.

Plus points: Barb.

Wish Upon: Modern day monkeys paw
Platypuschow11 January 2019
Wish Upon is a horror tale that tells the story of a mysterious Chinese music box that grants seven wishes, but at a price.

Starring the adorable Joey King alongside Ryan Phillippe and Elisabeth Rohm it's an original piece, though clearly influenced by the classic tale of the monkeys paw. Thankfully I like that old tale so was excited to see what new twists they brought to the table, and quite frankly I walked away happy though some influence came from Final Destination (2000) as well.

It's a well constructed, suitably paced movie with a fantastic cast and more than a sprinkle of good ideas. I find Joey King very likeable, not only the fact that she's adorable but she's a competent actress with hopefully a great career ahead of her and it's about time Phillippe returned to form.

If you like alternative horror that doesn't rely on a dude with a knife, ghosts, big scary monsters or demonic themes then this may well be for you. There were elements that left me scratching my head but nothing that wasn't forgivable.

Well worth a watch.

The Good:

Fantastic cast

Solid concept

The Bad:

Dreadful cover art

Couple of loose ends

Difficult sitting through this when nothing happens in this boredom of a horror movie.
cruise0115 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Wish Upon is something that you wish it was not made or wished that you did not see the film in the first place. It's a supernatural horror movie that does not have any scares, thrills, or a movie worth remembering. It slightly reminds me that it feels like a Final Destination movies, were some supernatural occurrences involve people getting killed by accidents. But the film is about a Chinese music box that gives anyone seven wishes to make. 17 year old Clare ((Joey King) was given the box after her father (Ryan Phillippe) picked it up from a dumpster. Clare makes her first wish after an encounter with a bully in high school. The wish comes true and involves the bully getting rotten. Therefore, she makes another wish to help her and her dad financially. And it goes on from there. Every wish she makes has a repercussion to others. And once she reaches the seventh wish, she will have to pay the price with her life. Which she was unaware of. But her friend was able to figure this all out and warn her about the consequences of this box.

The plot was just stupid and cliché. Even after Clare makes the first wish and realizes how evil this box is. She continues to use it for her own selfish reasons. It does make it difficult to even care for her. Especially, when her own friends are getting killed or neighbors are dying. It took almost ¾ of the movie and several body counts until she realizes the box is evil and she needs to get rid of it.

There was no scares or thrills. The film was very dull and boring. Like it was difficult to pay attention to the screen when nothing was happening throughout the whole movie. The script was tedious. Characters did not have any emotional connection too. Even for Clare, who lost her mother at a young age. And it is still difficult to care for her, when she is getting picked on by bullies and her ignorance when she finds this mysterious box.

No offense to Joey King. She is a sweet actress. But this film is definitely not worth checking out. If you seen Final Destinations, than you saw the better version of thrills on seeing people getting caught in deadly accidents.

Wish Upon is a horrible film. There were no scares. The plot was cliché and stupid. The direction and script was very boring and terrible writing. The acting was terrible.

I rate the film 1 out of 5 stars. I do not recommend the film unless its on TV. Otherwise, I ll pass on this one.

Mixed feelings, but still worth seeing
benimations29 July 2017
This movie has it's ups and it's downs. There were some really great suspense scenes, while others where painfully obvious. I feel like they should've spend just a little bit more time on it, to work out the kinks.

Overall I would still recommend you to see it and don't give up on it too soon. There is some really great stuff in there. It's been a while since a movie genuinely had me on the edge of my seat, which completely made up for the bad parts.

Dumb movie, would not recommend
CharlieK9610 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'm sorry but what assembly of badly-cut nonsense scenes is this shitpile of a movie? Mostly I'm sorry that they put that much money into making this stupid movie. (12 mio.$, which is still too much) By stupid, I do not mean to insult the movie, or the movie makers, but the movie thoroughly is stupid. From the very beginning, you know how it will end. You know more or less what the engravings on the box will translate to, and that the main character will die because of it. Every single thing that happens is annoyingly foreseeable.

(Spoiler Alert!) So, the movie starts off with Clare being haunted by her mother's suicide when she was little. Her father, Jonathan, who dumpster dives like an addict, one day finds a music box with Chinese engravings and gives it to his daughter as an early birthday present. Clare manages to decipher ''Seven Wishes'' on the box. Of course, she ignores the rest of whats written on the box, the small print, saying, – as we find out afterwards – that every wish has a blood price and that she'll die afterwards. (It will claim her soul.) After her first wish, to rot the school bully Darcie, comes true, Clare's beloved dog dies. Though, that does not seem to frighten Clare enough to stop. She goes on wishing for dumb teenager stuff, and is surprised every time someone dies. Only after her fourth wish, she realizes that it was maybe not the best idea to go on like this. She now still makes wishes, only that she starts feeling a little guilty. (3 people and her dog died and she only NOW feels bad) As Clare's life is going down the drain, she uses her seventh and last wish to travel back in time to the day before her father found the music box. Instead of keeping everyone away from it, she takes she music box and gives it to a friend in order for him to bury it. Of course, out of curiosity he does not simply bury it without checking it out. So, Clare gets run over and the music box, with Clare's help, finds its next owner and target. Thank you Clare. A mid-credit-scene of her friend with the music box indicates a sequel. (please no sequel.)

Besides the flawed and stupid plot, the jump-scares the movie tries to make are really bad. The music builds up, and you already know what's going to happen. This gets to the point that you are annoyed more and more by every alleged jump-scare they try to make. Oh wait, I forgot - what music? The only tension the movie manages to build up is the tension to decide whether to leave the movie theater or hope for a good end, that is not there. Also, the camera movements are really weird. The producers maybe tried to be fancy and creative, but all they did was confuse the viewers with weird angles and shots that do not fit.

So, all in all, cinematography, music and the plot were disappointing. Would not recommend this movie. If I had a music box to grant me the wish to go back in time, I would go see another movie instead.

Did an enemy of the director pay people to rate this so low?
scotttilmont14 February 2022
I'm extremely confused about the rating. This movie is decent enough to watch. Did too many non-horror fans vote? I found it well made. Did you not like the ending? Duh, shock endings are what's great about movies like this. Give it a watch. It is not a disappointment.

I'm waiting for supernatural terror
Andres-Camara4 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
More than anything because it has not arrived yet. It's not that it's a bad movie, it's that you're going to forget it already. We could say that it is a film of university students rather than terror. Where a girl not very intelligent asks desires of small girl.

In no time the film gets to start, so it can not fall. There is no tension, no fear or nothing.

It's a movie without a photograph, it does not help anything, it's not scary or anything.

Its director, does not know how to take it, or print tension or fear. He does not know how to use the camera. He only knows how to bore.

The funniest film I have ever ever seen
greenyboy01010 January 2019
There are so many moments, so many lines, scenes, deaths and editing issues in this film that it is unbelievably funny. I have watched scenes in this film multiple times because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The characters don't communicate like humans, the person who wrote this clearly has no understanding of how young people actually are and how they behave. Every teenager in this film has a massive font on their phone like they're 80 years old. There's a scene in a cafeteria where they trade hilariously inept insults. It is genuinely amazing.

I am writing a seperate paragraph just for the ending because oh my, it is the best ending I've ever seen. I've seen The Room, Birdemic, Troll 2, Vampires Kiss, you name it, I've seen it. But this is easily the funniest ending I have ever ever seen. It's so bad, so nonsensical, so inept and so unaware that it is so bad that I ended up watching it a further 10 times at least. I couldn't sleep for a good hour or two because I was laughing and crying so hard. Watch this movie. It's too good to be missed.

It's a horror movie that most B-horror fans can enjoy.

'WISH UPON': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

The new supernatural horror flick about a girl that gets a strange music box from her father, that she realizes will grant her seven wishes. She also later learns though, that there's a very violent and horrific price for every wish. The film was directed by John R. Leonetti (who's also helmed other horror flicks like 'ANNABELLE' and 'THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT 2'), and it was written by Barbara Marshall (who also wrote the horror flick 'VIRAL', from last year). The movie stars Joey King, Ryan Phillipe, Elisabeth Rohm, Ki Hong Lee, Sydney Park, Shannon Purser, Mitchell Slaggert and Sherilyn Fenn. The screenplay was voted to the 2015 Black List, and the film was made on a budget of just $12 million. It's received mostly mediocre reviews from critics, and viewers, but I enjoyed it.

Clare Shannon (King) is a high school student that's constantly picked on by the popular girls at school, and she's also severely embarrassed by her 'dumpster diving' father (Phillipe). Her mother (Rohm) committed suicide too, when Clare was young, and Clare is still traumatized by it. Then one day her dad brings her home a mysterious music box, that he found in a dumpster, which says it will grant her seven wishes. Clare decides to entertain the fantastical idea, and then she's amazed when her wishes start coming true. Then Clare becomes haunted by the box though, when people start dying (seemingly) as a result of her making wishes.

I enjoy horror movies, especially really good quality thrillers, but even B-horror flicks too. This is definitely a B-horror movie, but for me it was a lot of fun. I could really relate to Clare, and the concept of the movie is really interesting to me as well. I'd even go see a sequel (which the film is definitely set up for). The death scenes also reminded me a lot of the 'FINAL DESTINATION' franchise, which I also liked (at least at first). I think this is a horror movie that most B-horror fans can enjoy (like I definitely did).

almost a satire on American selfishness
Quinoa198419 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is not the most entertaining movie of 2017 (though at times it certainly aims high), but Wish Upon is one of the most *2017* of 2017 movies. It's a story of selfishness and the worst impulses people tend to go to, especially when they're inconsistently written; Joe King's Clare starts off in the story seeming like one of those smart but decidedly outsider-ish teenagers (you know, the ones who are fairly normal until up against the bitchy 'mean girls' of the school like the one who gets the first wish upon to "rot"), perhaps like a second- rate but recognizable Daria type: artistic, witty, someone we might root for... and this falls apart very quickly as soon as she gets the wish box, and all of her wishes are the most shallow crap.

Of course, one can't have a Monkeys' Paw horror story like this without a character making some foolish decision, but this takes it to the limit and BEYOND. This movie takes that concept - remember that Treehouse of Horror segment from The Simpsons? Good, this is *almost* as funny as that, whether intentional or (especially) not - and gives it the Final Destination treatment. It's not like random people become dead due to Clare's wishes (aka the "Blood Promise" from each wish granted) - it's people (including, spoiler, a dog) who Clare knows and (sometimes?) cares about, but what's uproariously, hysterically, WTF-are-they-smoking-in-crack-form funny about it is how at times the sort of 'fate' type of murder scenarios play with the victims like a cat with a string.

This is a movie where every death scene is elongated and, while in PG-13 somewhat without blood or gore, are still effective for what they can get away with... and the director can't help but tease every single death to comic lengths (i.e. an old man getting into a bathtub we think is dead hitting his head, but he gets up and, as if out of classic Stooges short, his his head on the *faucet* above him and that is what gets him to shuffle off the mortal coil. But it's not just that - it's *every* death scene that gets the Final Destination treatment, even in moments where it would be so easy for a death to occur (where's Tony Todd when you need him!) Every death carries some level of humor, and for the life of me I couldn't figure out if the director (former cinematographer turned director Leonetti) was in on the joke or sincere with his set pieces.

And all the while, Clare becomes so much less sympathetic that she becomes the villain of her own story. This could become interesting, and Wish Upon feels like it's stepping up to the ledge of perhaps being a kind of horror/thriller satire of sorts, maybe looking at the way that young people become totally engrossed in their own self interests (Clare's friend dutifully points out she didn't try to wish for world peace, or any wishes for her friends). But it never really goes over the ledge, or feels like it's knowing entirely what it's supposed to be, like Get Out earlier this year certainly did. At any rate, we have in this movie things like Ryan Phillippe as Clare's dumpster-diver-ex-sax-playing father (in the backstory, Clare's mother committed suicide, but the how and why is so lame to tie back into the plot you can see it a mile away if you try), and he's here to... get a check I guess. And there's other odd things going on like a class where students learn Chinese in what appears to be Anytown, USA (is it some weird comment about how movies are pandering to Chinese audiences? I don't know if this even *is* a movie that would play in China anyway)

The movie is a mess, but it's highly entertaining, and I had many, many ,laughs while watching. Was it at its expense? I don't know. But if you're hankering for a Final Destination light experience, this is a decent one to seek out. Is it scary? I wish.

I've got the music in me
nogodnomasters28 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The film loosely combines 'The Monkey's Paw" and "Mean Girls" to create a teen horror/drama. Clare (Joey King) is a plain teen girl bullied at school by the popular girl (Josephine Langford). Her dad practices the age old honored profession of mudlarking in local dumpsters. Here he discovers an old Chinese music box which he gives to his daughter. She makes wishes on the box which grants them to her, but at a price, which for the first half of the film seems coincidental.

The ability to wish your problems away and be popular with the boyfriend of your choosing is every teen girl's dream, and I would imagine this production will be greatly appreciated by that audience, more so than a non-teen male, like myself. I didn't feel the intensity.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

WISH UPON (2017) ** Joey King, Ryan Phillippe, Ki Hong Lee, Mitchell Slaggert, Shannon Purser, Sydney Park, Elisabeth Rohm, Josephine Lanford, Sherilynn Fenn, Jerry O'Connell. Better than expected yet predictable supernatural thriller with King as a put-upon teen whose father discovers a Chinese thingamajig which causes wishes to come true but for a deadly price. One third of entertainment, two thirds of junk!
Pansarfluff7 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie actually started off as quite entertaining and I was happily surprised as I had been really skeptical about this title. However, it seems like the major problem with this movie is its length. After about 30 minutes it stops being entertaining and just becomes uneventful and boring, like the creators had a great idea but not enough material to make a feature film. To make things even worse, most of the entertainment of the first 30 minutes was not the horror. The movie lacks horror, a lot of it. The perhaps most obvious example of this is Darcie and her rotting skin. She takes her sock of, revealing a black foot and that's it. This made me really disappointed. Some scenes in this movie could have been absolutely terrifying, but they always end before the horror gets a chance to grab the audience.

I like the basic concept of this movie but I hate its execution.

I Wish For Better Execution
rgkarim15 July 2017
I wish I may, I wish I might, make a demand that might cost someone's life? That's not the way the rhyme goes, but this parody is pretty representative of the theme of my latest review. Robbie K here, this time covering Wish Upon the latest horror genre flick to flood the silver screens across the country. The "disturbing" trailers paint the picture of the next spine tingling film, but the PG-13 rating suggests it could be a little timid. What's the verdict? Hopefully I can fill in some answers to help answer that question. Let's get started!

LIKES:

Shorter Run Time: I know what you're thinking, not good if this is a like, but it's nice to see a movie stick around the 90-minute run time when there isn't sustenance to keep it running longer. Wish Upon fills its short run-time purpose with the thrills you want, and keeps it concise, a sign of good directing and editing in an era what that so suffers.

Joey King: Singling out the actors in this rather new actor cast, Joey King reprises her horror acting in a "two thumbs up" manner. King plays the role of a distressed teenager with class, bringing a delicate balance of drama, screaming, and shallow happiness to the character. In many PG-13 or teenager focused films, the lead character often suffers from overacting or extreme tangents in directing. For me, King was able to keep things in good proportions and didn't have me rolling my eyes (a first in a long time.) While certainly not an award-winning performance, King gets props for carrying the load of the movie.

A Nice tangent: Despite the common trend of demons, spirits, and ghosts… Wish Upon at least brings a slight twist to the themes of horror movies. The wishing factor is a nice gimmick to get sold onto and see what desires will tempt her to risk lives. It set a nice pace for the movie to build upon, and made it a little dynamic in regards to whom would pay the blood price for Clare's (King) decisions and selfishness. The wish factor also presented some character development, shallower but existing, that really worked in their favor.

Not overly graphic: A PG-13 horror movie is often a lot lax in their grim depictions of death. Wish Upon continues that trend, forgoing gross, exaggerated, drawn out torturous deaths in favor of ridiculous, and still horrible, deaths that are quickly executed. One can think of this as Final Destination meets Unfriended, which boils down to coincidental deaths with a filter. Unfortunately, it means you have seen a majority of the executions via the commercials, but you will get a few sequences that have escaped the public eye up until now.

DISLIKES:

Very simplistic: Despite the deaths being filtered and less intense, they were also very simplistic and not as impressive. Yes, they were still awful (as death is), but the hype up of the trailers was sadly dropped with the simplicity of the deaths. There was no extra edge factor to them, and the lack of suspense, which left the ridiculous nature of the deaths the eye-rolling component of the film. If you want the mindless, over the top deaths without the blood… well your wish has been granted I guess. Story: Wish Upon's tale has some decent character development in it to highlight the underlying theme of the horror movie. It was great seeing Clare's transitions and her attempt to find the solution to the curse kept in the box. However, outside of that, the story tanks. It's the same predictable mess that most of this genre is, with little sustenance so that they could cram more deaths into the movie. The cool wish concept brought about a lot of potential to interact with the entity, as well as opportunities for a more suspenseful uncovering of the source of the evil. I would have liked to see what the creature looked like, or at least more interaction with the invisible evil that dwelled within. Other plot elements could have been a little more detailed in the delivery as well, to add the emotional impact I think they wanted.

The VERDICT:

Wish Upon isn't the worst movie to grace the theaters. This PG-13 movie brings a unique angle to a stale concept that is concise, decently acted, and not overly graphic. Unfortunately, the execution is still in need of work on a variety of areas. A lackluster story that was underdeveloped and the lack of suspense are two key areas the potential sequel can bring to the table. As for this film though, if you aren't looking for a filtered death movie, you might skip this until haunts Netflix. For those looking for a simplistic horror film though… you've got a ringer in the theaters this summer. One thing is certain though…be careful what you wish for.

My scores:

Fantasy/Horror/Thriller: 6.0 Movie Overall: 4.0

Uneven Horror
fstapleton-7554317 September 2019
Overall not very good but watchable as it moves quickly through all the cliches you can expect in a very uneven manner. Decent backstory, some effective scenes including the end and the cast do their best. Let down often though by poor direction/script and story development. This really needed a lot more work to approach being a good film. However watchable as undemanding B movie horror.

Box of Wishes
Mark-12915 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
To begin, this is definitely not a very good film. What's on screen views as a promising second draft that needed a bit of story expansion and nuance by the screenwriter. It not helpful the script is directed just as written, meaning no atmosphere, mood or imagination. Young Joey King plays Claire, a high school student who comes into possession of a Chinese Wish box and granted seven wishes which are paid for by the death of those closest to her. Claire's vapid wishes lead to several deaths that take place in a vacuum. If you have seen a "Final Destination" film you've seen how this goes, The redeeming feature of the story is the writer has set up a rather interesting twist at the end, however, it mostly just sits at the beginning and end, ignored , almost like a draft. It's so underdeveloped, I was halfway home before I realized how clever it might have been. Watch the dog's scenes at the beginning.

You can wish for better!
n-kefala6 August 2017
For cheap horror thrills, you can wish for better because this movie never goes far enough to truly scare anyone. "Wish Upon" isn't likely to make much of an impression with dedicated genre fans, but should play well to its clearly targeted teen audience. Unfortunately is another example of everything wrong with horror movies. It is too safe to be scary, too boring to be worthy of interest, too hilariously obvious to be taken seriously and puts a promising young cast on a dull and soulless story. John R. Leonetti offers no suspense or surprises and can't get a decent performance out of anyone. Wishing this film out of existence right now!

Swish Upon
imdb-936-83714417 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A woman Johanna Shannon (Elisabeth Rohm) is shown (reluctantly) throwing out a cloth-wrapped treasure in the trash. Her preschool daughter Clare (Raegan Revord) asks if she can ride her bike down the street. Her mom tells her it's okay but she has to come right back and stay on their own block. That's safe, to keep within an established timeframe and in one's familiar surroundings. She goes off with her pup Max, explores some baby birds in a tree nest, and returns home.

Fast forward to Clare as a high school senior. Her neighbor bakes with apples. Clare is the apple that doesn't fall far from the tree, taking after her mom who "was a good woman but she had a rough childhood, … secrets too big to live with." Clare has a sensitive artistic side like her mom's, which combined with a childhood trauma and a slight frame, makes her a target for bullying. Max is a big dog now. Her dad Jonathan (Ryan Phillippe) is a suave jazz sax player with a sideline of dumpster diving. He would have made a real catch in his day. The dumpster diving was fun when Clare was little, but now her dad is a source of embarrassment among Clare's schoolmates.

One day Jonathan finds a clamshell music box among the detritus—presided over by a gargoyle. Belated research will prove it to be a Chinese wish pot managed by a demon (Chinese: Yao Guai) that grants its holder seven wishes coming with a non-optional "blood price." After the 7th wish the Yao Guai claims its holder's soul. This particular pot had a tragic beginning, but its subsequent owners led prosperous lives—what remained of them—surrounded by lots of death.

This puts one in mind of (Prov. 26:27) "Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him", now bastardized into, "What goes around comes around", or in pc terms messing with a level playing field. Rolling a stone uphill with affirmative action is what causes it to roll back down, and the pit is dug to handicap the competition. Who could blame those owners for capitalizing on their "leveling" device to give themselves a playing field more to their liking, collateral damage notwithstanding?

Jonathan gives it to Clare as an early birthday present. Lacking the maturity of the previous owners, she makes various droll requests concerned with her status among her high school crowd. If you count coming down with a disfiguring disease and falling madly in love, there are plenty of hits and falls associated with Clare's wishes. Double whammies are not out of the question, either, where there is both a hit *and* a fall. A hanging, for instance, involves a fall from one's support, then the knot of the hangman's noose striking the back of the cranium to knock out the soon-to-be-deceased before the rope breaks his neck. An auto-pedestrian accident may start with the struck person being launched through the air to fall upon something. At any rate the sound of a falling body is 'swish' and a hit *upon* is like the *Upon* in the cute title. When Clare turns 18, her wishes turn more mature.

The setting looks genuine Ohio where I once lived. The actors are all good, down to the dog, and the principal (Clare) is photogenic, easy to look at. The plot is consistent and strangely relevant to real life. The music from the box sounds western, but the Mandarin Chinese pronunciation in the Chinese class was spot on as they did their drills starting with the teacher's name. "Wish Upon" was not overly gory, relying more on suspense and imagination to get to the audience. It's short at 1 1/2 hours, but if you stay past the end, there may be an extra scene. This is an altogether well-crafted film and earns my highest marks. Unfortunately, it hasn't been heavily hyped, so horror lovers may miss a good one if they wait too long. It's clever enough to deserve more than one viewing to catch what you missed the first time.

Entertaining 'B' Movie
stevendbeard16 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I saw "Wish Upon", starring Joey King-White House Down, The Conjuring; Ryan Phillippe-Shooter_tv, MacGruber; Elisabeth Rohm-The Last Ship_tv, Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark and Sherilyn Fenn-Ray Donovan_tv, Gilmore Girls_tv.

This is a teen horror movie that is loosely based on a short story by W.W. Jacobs called 'The Monkey's Paw'. Joey plays a high school teen that has the usual teen problems; she is not the most popular in school, does not have the hot boyfriend, her father embarrasses her, etc. Her father, Ryan, goes around the neighborhood scrounging through other people's trash, trying to make a living-see? embarrassing. Elisabeth plays Joey's mother, who committed suicide right in front of Joey when she was just a small child-great for scarring a kid for life, I must say. Sherilyn plays a friendly neighbor. Ryan discovers a mysterious box with Chinese writing on it and gives it to Joey. Joey can make out some of the markings on the box-she just happens to be taking Chinese in school-and gets a fellow classmate to help her with the rest of the translations. It seems the box will give whoever is in possession of it 7 wishes. The down side is that each wish has a blood sacrifice clause- someone has to die. As each wish takes it's toll on Joey-she gets more and more like Gollum wanting her precious wishes-she gets more desperate and says she can quit anytime she wants, which of course is not true. It is an entertaining film, the elaborate deaths sort of remind me of the Final Destination movies. As the end credits start, there is a scene but nothing at the very end. It's rated "PG-13" for violent and disturbing images and language and has a running time of 1 hour & 35 minutes. I don't know if I would buy it on DVD but like I said earlier, it is entertaining and it would be well worth a rental.

Generally generic

Warning: Spoilers
WISH UPON is yet another high school horror flick with an entirely predictable storyline that you'll have seen play out a million times before in a million similar ways. A typical mildly obnoxious protagonist - who has no likeable element to her personality whatsoever - comes into possession of an ancient magical device which will grant her seven wishes. They do come true, but with macabre results. This is the kind of teen friendly fare that I generally dislike watching, with cheesy death scenes that feel like weak imitations of the ones in the FINAL DESTINATION franchise and a general generic and predictable feel. I was amused to see Ryan Philippe looking middle aged and playing the protagonist's father.

A spoiled teenage girl discovers a box that carries magic powers and a deadly price for using them
kamin-987-80834630 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There were a couple decent scenes but overall the movie was a turd. It's the story of a spoiled whiny unpopular girl who is given a box that grants 7 wishes. For each wish, a blood price must be paid. In other words, someone has to die. The people that die, do so in the most ridiculous methods. For example, someone with very long hair let's it drape into the sink where there's a garbage disposal. The switch for the disposal is on the front of the sink cabinet at thigh level. Why would a switch be placed here where it's easily hit. Then again, why if you have long hair are you fiddling with the garbage disposal and not even bothering trying to move your hair out the way. So of course she bumps the switch and her hair gets stuck. Wow really imaginative.

Even after the girl finds out the truth that her wishes are killing people, she continues to make wishes. Like shes's on drugs and is addicted. Eventually it ends on a high note which made up for most of the film's mistakes.

I'm Expecting more
rjanlutero13 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As I have watched the trailer of wish upon, it made me interested and Excited about this movie because as what the trailer shows it contains curiosity and for final destination fans out there this movie is a mild version of it. As soon as i entered the cinema, there was my excitement and I am truly expecting for from this movie. The thing that lacks for me the most is the parts where the death scenes are lacking of something that can make the audience say "woah this scene!!" rather it made me cut off my excitement because it is not creative enough but since the main attraction of the movie is the story itself, it really is realistic based on the experiences of the protagonist that when you are getting bullied and there are real wishes to have, it is true that you wanted it as if you don't care anymore so that is why it made me still feel excited on about the characters portrayed and it was great.

Story-7/10 Characters-7-10 Death scenes- 5/10 Overall:6
