- Relationships are tested as the Pfefferman family gather for Maura's birthday. Sarah confronts Buzzy on temple board politics and Maura makes a big announcement, experiencing pushback from both Vicki and Shelly. The night culminates in a game of Sardines, forcing tense situations into tight spaces.
- The vote is held at the synagogue for the new Board members, the discussion at the Board meeting which bothers Raquel. Ali is surprised by an offer by her dentist, Dr. Gunderson, regarding her dental cleaning. And Maura gives herself a makeover. These issues lead into what is Maura's seventieth birthday party being held at the house for her legal family as well as her chosen family, the latter including people like Vicki, Davina and Shea. Those issues play a part in the evening, Maura's makeover which is only the first step in a series of announcements she makes at the party, those announcements which catch particularly Shelly and Vicki off guard. Meanwhile, Raquel confides in her old friend David, the new cantor, about how she feels about her current life. And the life of Nacho, the pet turtle Mort and Shelly gave their children in 1992 and which ran away shortly thereafter never to be found, is shown against the backdrop of some key moments in the Pfeffermans' lives.—Huggo
