Each year, the Indie Series Awards honor exemplary digital content creators who have succeeded despite working with limited budgets and committing to independent productions. The nominees for the 8th annual Indie Series Awards have been announced, with soap opera The Bay and oddball comedy The Amazing Gayl Pile leading the way.
The Bay, which also earned multiple wins at the 2016 Daytime Emmy Awards, secured a whopping 21 nominations, including nods in all seven of the acting categories for dramas. The Amazing Gayl Pile, which began on the Jash channel in 2014 before moving to NBC’s Seeso two years later, had a similarly impressive haul throughout the Indie Series Awards’ comedy categories. Its 16 nominations include seven in acting divisions.

As it does every year, the New York Television Festival (Nytvf) used the last week in October to hand out awards and development deals to independent web series creators. This year’s biggest hits included Steve Dildarian’s The Worst Husband, which won the Nytvf Critics Award as well as one of two “Best of the Fest” prizes, as well as Streamy Award winner Brooklyn Sound, which earned one of the ten development deals handed out at the festival.
The Worst Husband was one of the most high-profile projects in the Nytvf field; previously, Dildarian served as the creator of the HBO cult hit The Life and Times of Tim. His latest show topped all challengers in the Nytvf’s Independent Pilot Competition. Medium Well, a comedy about an aspiring chef, earned the other Best of the Fest award by being selected as the festival’s best script.

In the golden age of television, the New York Television Festival is quickly becoming the place to find the next crown jewel. Now in its 12th year, the festival continues to grow each year both in scope and prestige, boasting a record number of submissions, artists, and industry participation.
“It’s taken us a couple of years to get to this point, but we’re hitting our stride at a time where there is great creativity in TV and digital,” said Nytvf Founder and Executive Director Terence Gray, surveying the room bustling with pitch meetings on plush couches. “It’s fun, you see these incredibly talented people that are being given a shot to sit down with agents and managers and executives.”

In the years since “30 Rock” went off the air, Keith Powell has been keeping busy. Beyond making notable appearances on series including “About a Boy” and “The Newsroom,” the man you might know best as “Toofer” has been stretching his creative wings, making his own original digital series “Keith Broke His Leg” and pursuing a career in directing for television.

When Powell was cast in the “30 Rock” pilot as a “Tgs” writer whose nickname came from the fact that he was both black and a Harvard graduate, he lacked experience as an actor, and he freely admitted that the show’s seven seasons were “the very best doctoral program” he could ask for not just as an actor but as a director.
Directing is a realm he’s continuing to explore — in fact,...
