Iconic Crusty Retired Detective Rides Again
AudioFileZ30 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
You are going to like the new reality cop show Killing Fields. Do I have your attention with an arrogant throw down like that first sentence? Well, I actually do think you will like this show simply because there is a lot to like.

First, true justice for victims doesn't always come easy and when it's about twenty years on and the police are truly still trying, well, then I'm interested as to why. The first season of Killing Fields is about just such a case. Second, all the principals are likable to the point you really feel for them, rooting for their success. Third, the producers have logically laid out the show with a proper amount of human interest sides about the principals who have REAL stamped all over themselves. It's as compelling as the crime story. And the pace of the story works without too much of that formulaic dreck so many crime shows use.

If I had one reason you should watch Killing Fields it would be retired/re-activated detective Rodie Sanchez. This guy has charisma dripping off of him. His humanity really comes through; his many failings, his never give up attitude, and his survivor mentality combine to make him a guy you want to watch. And, watch is what I want to do, but it seems Discovery network might not agree? Maybe the ratings weren't good? It won't be the first time stupid shows trumped better ones. After six episodes in season one there is no information on Discovery's site if and when the show will return. Perhaps this, in large par is due because there is nothing monumental against the enigmatic prime suspect, or anyone else. An indictment for this best suspect isn't going to happen it appears as he has ;lawyered up. In that shield there is really little that can be done without some real irrefutable evidence that may never come Like Rodie Sanchez this case is under my skin ( it only took six solid episodes) and I want more. Highly recommended even if the resolution is not obtained because Killing Fields is an interesting and entertaining show about real slow crime work which dedicated detectives who truly want justice even if it takes 20 years.

Great Folks
sanibel-355807 March 2017
Husband and I really enjoy the great folks in this reality program. We definitely love our Cajuns to the East. Hope Rodie and Aubrey can continue working together to solve cold cases. They are a pleasure to watch and enjoy everyone else on the show too. Congrats on the recent apprehension and hope you can continue the show as long as possible. Sorry Leda, we like to watch the guys work. Praying for continuing good health for Rodie. Love you guys! I would also like to say that the videography is really good for this show. Great shots, really cool opening vid for it and beautiful shots of Lousiana swamp.

Worth the wait!
Birdawgrob9 March 2018
Today so manIy want instant gratification and albite some shows/series I am biting my nails to hit watch next episode. That goes with Killing Fields. Yes they did make you wait to find out what happened next, but I believe they are giving you some sort of feeling on a minute scale of what they went through. I find the detectives very intriguing and likeable. I watch a lot of true crime shows and read a lot of true crime biographies. I missed my calling! I really enjoy this show and look forward to many, many more episodes. Great job.

Should have been a one-hour TV movie
pd78w16 December 2021
I have a hunch the entire reason for Season 1 was to supplement the retirement fund of detective Rhodes "Rodie" Sanchez. Painfully slow, scripted. Identical redundant "previously on" flashbacks were annoying. Basically had enough actual material for a one-hour TV movie. Instead, it was dragged into 301 minutes of tedious repetition.

My advice: Watch the first episode, then skip to the final. You will not miss a thing.

mdavis-3771512 February 2017
Love Killing Fields. For once a show that studies evidence on solving a cold case , rather than shows always showing violence .... The actors are great ! Aubrey is sexy ! Bet he gets that a lot ..... I hope it will continue . I 'd love to know the outcome of the murders.... Will their be more after this ? I love the real time. Finally a different show !!!! Everyone wants to know if Aubrey is married... Just repeating that it's a great show... How are the ratings ? I want to see it come back. I have never missed an episode !!!! Love it....I think I covered everything . Please just keep the show going . I tell people how good it is ! Love it !

Real time crime solving
CharlotteSometimez6 March 2017
Rodie and Aubrey make a great team. Rodies passion and commitment to the victims and their families adds to this great show. As a viewer, he makes me care and want justice for the victims and families. The real time aspect of this show keeps it interesting. I cant wait for the next episode to see if they will finally be able to get enough evidence on Tommy Francise or Eugenie's ex husband.

The BEST true crime series on Discovery!
penny-4653427 February 2017
I have been watching this show from the very beginning and I have to say it is absolutely the best true crime series I've ever watched! I love the fact that is it shot in real time, with REAL detectives pursuing the same thing for a cold case, JUSTICE. I also love how Rodie Sanchez speaks his mind with his own words (some bleeps) and never holds anything back! This show let's you in behind the scenes, brings you right there with them, REAL stuff, NOT scripted and I think that's why its growing popularity by each episode!

The Discovery channel does it again and ruins a great idea by annoyingly stretching out episodes
randymcbeast11 January 2017
The Discovery channel should be taken out back and beaten to a pulp. So many of their programs are just so poorly edited/directed to the point where they drain the reality out of them.

This series is no different and could be the worst of the bunch. They so obviously stretch out the content it should be criminal. They replay things over and over and take side tracks and all of a sudden the hour is over and the coming attractions are on for next week.

Now with season two they've made it even worse by adding more cases to the pile. Now, they are changing off the original case in season one and switching around to different cases. This stretches everything out exponentially because they replay content even more now when they switch back to a different case.

What's the most annoying aspect of this is how many times we hear the same, "I'm gonna solve this if it's the last thing I do" garbage from Rodie Sanchez. They pan right in close to his face over and over. So annoying.

The direction and editing is second to Rodie as unbearable. The slo-mo bs, the misleading down certain paths, and so on.

Luckily, I can fast forward through and do my own editing. It takes me about 5 minutes to watch every hour episode. Way to go Discovery channel.

THis show is run murder live trial
mickdundeeaussieeeeee19 February 2017
Ill start off by saying I love the show and ama 34 year old male Trump supporter. I love the masculinity and mystery of the show. SO this wont appeal to the GQ esquire girlymen or my wife. If you are looking for housewives of NOLA or shaved legs on guys look to E, CBS, BNBC or elsewhere.

Love the investigators...but content drags
julescaroline22 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I have a bit of a mixed review here. On the one hand, I appreciate the character development of the lead investigators. However, as a southern lady, it's a tad offensive that the southern dialect is used in a manner that makes us appear drunken or uneducated. I can appreciate the beautiful imagery, however, putting an entire show in slow motion in an attempt to drag 15 minutes of contents into a 60 minute show is ludicrous. It's way to obvious, again I can appreciate the attempt at dramatic cinematography, but you could literally watch an entire episode in 5 minutes. Why not shoot footage from solved cases? I just watched an entire episode of the investigators dragging a river and dramatically pull out...wait for it...a hubcap. Come on Discovery, you're better than this. You have actual investigators, which works way better than the actors that are terrible...give them something to run with already.

Great Show!!
jesconst14 March 2017
I have been watching this show from the beginning of the first season. It definitely keeps me interested and each episode and seems like it's 10 minitues long. Detectives Sanchez and. St. Angelo are great at what they do and work very well together. I definitely hope the episodes and seasons continue.

Another Episode Please!
vtpeanut11 April 2017
Watched every episode & fell in love with all of the cast. The fact that you are all REAL people, not actors, you have real lives and emotions, making everything so believable.

Please tell me there more episodes planned for the future? I am sure hoping so... if you ever visit Oregon by the way, stop on by!

The reality of an investigation told through their own experiences. The hardships they endure both professionally and emotionally. I highly recommend it all true crime fans.

Real Life Law & Order
pamfitz-125568 January 2018
I just found this show On Demand & I love it. Being from New England sometimes the accent on the main characters is a bit difficult, but it's certainly authentic. I love Rodie Sanchez, he's what you'd get if you called Central Casting & asked for a cynical Southern Cop. Only he's the real deal, a Southern version of Lenny from L&O. I like how open he is about being married 6 times & how tough being a cop is on your family. Nice that his wife "gets it" for the most part & let him come out of retirement for this case. Aubrey is the younger "cold case" cop who Rodie is working with. He's very likeable & hard working, as were the other women detectives in the office. If you like crime shows, this is a good one.

A dissipated cop with drinking problem + cold case = 60 minutes of boredom
jd_consult119 January 2017
The name "Killing Fields" is a misnomer. It should be renamed "Killing Ratings". Louisiana once again is in the cross hairs of reality TV producers. Not for alligators or cat fish hunting. This time the producers are looking to repackage small production budgets and amateur local talent into a cheap version of "Cold Case". They fail miserably. The show is rife with dramatic slow mo shots of a rogue's gallery of washed up ex-cops engaging in irrelevant activities: Wiping brows while in deep thought, swigging booze, eating crawdads, jogging in thrift store tennis shoes. Not much time seems to be spent investigating and the dramatic film noirish shots aren't enough to save this tedious shipwreck of a reality TV show.

Spoiler: nothing happens
gmchunt30 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing happens, but luckily the same clips are repeated about 12 times an episode, so if you're not sure that nothing is happening, you soon will be. A good idea for a series ruined by an overly American approach to directing / editing, and the fact that the detectives couldn't solve a children's puzzle.

Started Out Good, But Repeats Same Info ad-nauseum
IMoneGitDatSumBeech21 January 2022
After a few episodes, they begin increasingly repeating the same stuff they've already repeated 3 times over, the same film clips, the same script, the same everything. It started out as an interesting cold case. If they'd just progressed it naturally with limited review it would have been great. Now I'm watching season 2, episode 2, and it is almost an exact copy of season 2 episode 1, which was a complete review of season 1. They don't even bother to change the clips - it's the same video, the same suspects, the same everything. I had to stop it to see if I was watching the same thing over, but I wasn't.

Killing time
catnapbc27 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As others have said, this (have only watched the first season) 'series' could have been whittled down to 1/2 hr to one hour instead of this prolonged repetition of what just transpired. It certainly gives an interesting insight into the bayou area and mentality of its inhabitants and shows how tedious and frustrating police/detective work can often be. The characters are a mix of bright and decent types, like the female detectives and Aubrey, and the types like Rodie Sanchez and some of the other locals who are pretty stereotypical of what I expected to see here. No shortage of suspects and weirdos but in the end, even dna could not help solve this cold case. Justice for the victim Eugenie may still come but after many hours of watching this unfold, it was just unsatisfactory but obviously also how it sometimes is in the real world. Not sure I want to sit through another far-too-long explanation of a crime that is inconclusive at best. What was refreshing was the not-so-pleasant personality of detective Sanchez and his shortcomings, but also his own realization as to his strengths and weaknesses. Not all cops are the kind you see in tv crime shows. And not all are geniuses who solve all cases.
