Yes this is not real life nor is it fantasy ... it is supposed to be a look into a gamers mindset ... now of course every gamer is different so don't feel to offended if this isn't what you are like. Our main character here is quite the shy guy, which is needed since he gets paired with the crazy girl ... opposites attract and all that stuff.

Now don't get me wrong the movie is full of cliches and I wouldn't be surprised if you like it less than I do ... I would also not be surprised if you like it more, because you did suspend your disbelief and just ... rolled with the flow! The actors seem way too old for the age they are playing, but that should not bother you that much .. unless you have to much time to think about things ...

Scott Pilgrim gone very wrong

Warning: Spoilers
"Offline - Das Leben ist kein Bonuslevel" or "Offline: Are You Ready for the Next Level?" or just "Offline" is a new German movie from 2016 and this one was written and directed by Florian Schnell. It was his first full feature work after some short films and the outcome is sadly pretty bad. One reason is that lead actor Moritz Jahn fails completely and comes even short playing a character who does not require great range. His co-lead Mala Emde is definitely better, but she also has some weak moments, some of them due to the script. Admittedly her gorgeous looks made up for that and the blue hair looks great on her. I saw her in other films and she was way better there, so maybe she did not do herself a great favor by accepting this role here. The core of the film is on mixing video games (fantasy) with real life and make a film out of this combination that succeeds on the dramatic level as well as the comedic level. It doesn't even come close in any of these areas which makes the way in which the film takes itself seriously pretty cringeworthy to watch at times and the comedy definitely has an aura of try-hard to it because it never seems natural. This is the consequence of, among other things, the mix of video game world and characters feeling really bumpy from start to finish. Also I found it difficult to cheer for the protagonist at all as I never saw him as the likable nerd the film was trying to depict him as. And well the ending is pretty feel-good for the sake of it too. I think the film is tolerable early on, but gets even worse in the second half why I need to be even harsher with my rating because honestly the longer it went the more it felt like a bad lets play video with all the video game scenes. The Ragnarök achievement plot sure did not work out at all and as it is one of the central components of the film it is another area where the failure really hurts the movie as a whole. A lot about this movie is over the top, but not in a good way. I also don't understand why Youtube people with almost no acting talent (sorry Sarazar) get cast in movies. Oh well, I guess it is to get their millions of subscribers to watch the movie. I guess that's all from me now and I really hope that Schnell can step things up in the future because otherwise I cannot really see him having a long career. His film here is indeed as bad as the German and English long titles suggest: RTL television level.

As a real gamer *scratches groin area* this movie is unrealistic!
Critic_One15 August 2019
The thot is not realistic considering gamer girls are a myth invented by the government to capture gamers because of our high IQ. Us gamers need to think with our brains and not our peepees!

I like it, it starts slow but then it catches you, the girl very well and I'm going to see it with my 12 year old son again, I'm sure you'll like it, one who is a gamer since childhood, he understands the effort of the director to give a entertainment in a healthy and enjoyable movie.

I disagree

Warning: Spoilers
I have to completely disagree with the other reviewer. I went into this thinking it would be pretty bad and ended up enjoying it. It's definitely cliché and certain scenes are annoying (the entire ending pretty much), but it's definitely worth a watch. First of all, the male lead is not supposed to be likable, you're only supposed to relate to him in whatever small way. That's why they establish what an @$$hole he is right from the get go. Second, I didn't find the humor forced at all, definitely over the top but not forced. I enjoyed all the references and memes, right down to the gifs in the credits, so maybe we just have different senses of humor. I didn't mind the video game scenes, aside from the Ragnarok tournament at the end (which made no sense to me). All in all, if the male lead hadn't been a jealous idiot (and had kissed her the first time), and if they had teamed up at the end, and if they found a more clever way to get their accounts back, this could have been a great movie. Instead it's you're typical indie fare. My rating is a bit generous out of enjoyment, but this should definitely not be a 2 in my eyes.

Also, what's with the English title? "Life is not a bonus level" fits much better.

a fun take at the gamer culture

The story is fun and coherent with a few underwhelming twists. If you're a gamer you can definitely relate to the protagonist.

A fun ride
jimtraina12 April 2023
This was a film more for young people and gamers, but I found it quite entertaining. The movie creatively mixes game play and real life, as dedicated game players are forced to go on a quest in the real world. The story was a bit simplistic and not very realistic, but I give the movie a lot of points for creativity. I don't know if this type of movie, with lots of cool gaming effects, is becoming popular, but I've never seen anything quite like it. I'm torn on how to rate it, but I'm going to give it a 6½ (rounding up to 7 here).

This won several awards as a youth movie, but there's something to enjoy for fun-loving adults as well.
