The Max series based on DeuxMoi’s novel “Anon Pls” has attached Diablo Cody and Ryan O’Connell to serve as writers, Variety has learned from sources.
As initially reported in May 2022, the project is currently set up at Max with a script-to-series commitment. It is being developed as a one-hour drama series via Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Reps for Max and Warner Bros. Television declined to comment.
Cody is best known for writing the critically-acclaimed comedy feature “Juno,” for which she won the Academy Award for best original screenplay in 2008. Her other films include “Jennifer’s Body,” “Tully,” and “Young Adult.” She also co-created the Amazon comedy series “One Mississippi” alongside Tig Notaro and Showtime’s “United States of Tara” starring Toni Collette.
She is repped by WME, Mxn, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.

Exclusive: A surprise project has emerged to whet the appetites of hungry international buyers at next week’s American Film Market: Kevin Costner’s big-budget Warner Bros Western Horizon: An American Saga.
The two-part project is being sold to international buyers by recently rebooted German-based sales firm K5 International.
Chapters 1 and 2 of Horizon have been set by New Line to open domestically in cinemas on June 28, 2024, and August 16, 2024, respectively. That strong theatrical commitment is something that will appeal to international buyers, and some we’ve spoken with are already enthused about getting a sighter at a big-budget movie from an Oscar winner like Costner, even if prices are inevitably high.
We hear that Costner himself will likely take a view on offers in major territories, which isn’t unusual for an A-list director-producer working on a passion project, especially given that he has reportedly put a chunk of his own money into it.

14 years ago, we learned that Denis Leary's Apostle production company was developing a television series based on Andrew Niccol's sci-fi drama "Gattaca." It was a vague announcement buried in a story about the conclusion of Leary's FX show "Rescue Me." There wasn't so much as a logline. All we knew was that Gil Grant, a relentlessly mainstream TV writer best known for working on "24" and "NCIS," had been placed in charge of developing this cerebral property for Apostle. Nothing ever came of it, and we all forgot it was ever a thing — until today.
According to Deadline, "Homeland" co-creators Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa are developing a "Gattaca" series for Showtime via Sony Pictures Television. There's nary a word about Apostle in the trade break, but one of the original film's producers, Danny DeVito, is back in the fold. These are talented folks, but was there a...

Daniel Baur’s K5 Film and K5 International are re-teaming with writer/director Mukunda Michael Dewil for the time-loop thriller “Open House.” The script was written and developed by Jon Davis and Sergio Pinheiro.
Dewil and Baur, who will produce the movie, already worked together on the action thriller “Vehicle 19,” starring the late Paul Walker, and the psychological thriller “The Immaculate Room,” starring Emile Hirsch, Kate Bosworth and Ashley Greene Khoury, which won best picture and best male actor at the Mammoth Film Festival recently.
Dewil’s most recent movie project is thriller “Collide,” starring Ryan Phillippe, Kat Graham and Jim Gaffigan, which recently wrapped production. Baur is an exec producer on the movie.
“Open House” centers on a couple out house hunting, who get stuck inside a show house with a strange realtor.
The production is in the process of casting, and is looking to announce the cast within the coming weeks.

Screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan is making his directorial debut with “Mosul,” a film about a Swat team’s desperate fight to rid the Iraq city of Isis militants that shot in secret in Morocco last spring with a local cast.
“Mosul,” for which Carnahan wrote the screenplay, explores the true story of an elite police unit made up almost entirely of native sons of Mosul who fought to liberate the city from 6,000 Isis militants.
The film is based on a New Yorker story by Luke Mogelson, who embedded with the unit for two months and documented the team’s fight, block by block, to destroy Isis.
Produced by Agbo and Condé Nast Entertainment, the film was shot on location in Marrakech, Morocco this past spring. The film, shot by Academy Award-winning “Avatar” cinematographer Mauro Fiore, is now in postproduction in Los Angeles.
“Our writer/director Matthew Michael Carnahan was the perfect artist to depict this uniquely regional story which champions a culture that has never really been championed on screen before,” producers Joe and Anthony Russo said in a statement. “The heart of the movie depicts the innate desire to fight for country and home.”
The Russos said “Mosul” extends their commitment to producing auteur-driven films of social importance.
Anthony and Joe Russo serve as producers for the brothers’ Agbo production shingle, along with the company’s president of production Mike Larocca. Condé Nast Entertainment’s Jeremy Steckler will also produce, as well as Spotify’s Dawn Ostroff.

Executive producers for “Mosul” are Todd Makurath, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for Agbo, along with Mohamed Al-Daradji (“Son of Babylon”), Patrick Newall (Anon) and Wang Zhongjun, Wang Zhonglei and Felice Bee from Huayi Brothers Media.
“Mosul” features a cast drawn from the Middle East, North Africa and the Iraqi diaspora. Producers described it as the flip side of “American Sniper”: these being the soldiers for whom the only way home was by fighting to re-claim it.
Worldwide sales will be represented by Endeavor Content at Afm.

Universal offloaded this glossy sci-fi tale to the streaming platform and, despite a script from the writer of Arrival, it’s easy to see why
If we couldn’t safely presume Netflix is gathering data about our collective viewing habits to develop optimally profitable programming, the streaming site’s full-court press into science-fiction would seem a bit incongruous, or at least curious. In just the last year, Netflix has either produced or acquired Okja, Annihilation (for non-us audiences), Mute, The Titan, What Happened to Monday, Anon, How It Ends and The Cloverfield Paradox, and together those films have run the whole gamut from great to gratuitously bad.

Andrew Niccol’s crime drama about state abuse of private data is topical but badly executed
Andrew Niccol’s sci-fi thriller, set in a nervy near future in which all personal information is immediately accessible and memories are digitised and vulnerable to tampering, feels uncomfortably timely. It’s not such a massive leap to go from the mining of social networking profiles for political and commercial purposes to the complete and obligatory lack of privacy that is the norm in Anon. But the tone-deaf execution of the film – all flat-line delivery and awkward pauses – rather undermines the intelligence of the premise.
It’s particularly disappointing because, in star Clive Owen and writer-director Andrew Niccol, Anon boasts alumni from two of the more intriguing sci-fi films of the past couple of decades. But Anon lacks the sleek economy of Niccol’s calling card debut, Gattaca. And Owen, so robustly present in...

MaryAnn’s quick take… This sci-fi riff on the end of privacy is not as provocative as it would like to be, and its mystery completely falls apart in the end. From the pioneering mind of Academy Award nominated filmmaker Andrew Niccol comes Anon; his latest meditation on the fraught relationship between technology and humanity starring Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried
In a modern world where advanced biosyn implants mean everyone is subjected to a relentless visual stream of information they call the ‘Mind’s Eye’, privacy and anonymity as we know it has vanished. With everyone’s personal information on public display and each person’s life recorded down to the millisecond, personal information is downloaded to a vast grid called ‘The Ether’, a database which law enforcement can access and use to prosecute criminals.
In Anon, Sal Frieland (Clive Owen), is faced with a series of shocking murders which appear to be linked. Unable to identify the killers it soon becomes apparent that what they have in common signals a major breakdown in the system on which society has come to rely.

Andrew Niccol is a writer and director known for binding technology and social issues within his filmmaking arsenal. Projects such as Gattaca, In Time and even the Jim Carrey lead The Truman Show (which he wrote) have delved into the subject with complex concepts that continue to fascinate. His latest, starring Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried is Anon. On the surface it’s a whodunnit crime investigation however its concept of technological security and privacy are at its very foundation.

The Canadian province of Ontario offers producers myriad opportunities. Toronto, its largest city, is one of the world’s largest centers of film and television production, boasting multiple soundstages, equipment houses and experienced crews.
Toronto is also a major destination for location filming. It can double for practically any other metropolis in North America – and over the year has stood in for New York, Washington D.C, Boston and other cities.
Ontario also offers a 21.5% refundable tax credit that is stackable with the Canadian federal incentive of 16%. The province also provides an 18% animation and visual effects credit.
Specifically, the Ontario tax credit of 21.5% is available for qualified spend in the province, as is the 18% computer animation and effects credit.
The minimum spend per feature film is 1 million Canadian dollars, or about $778,000 in U.S. currency. The minimum required for TV projects ranges from 100,000 to 200,000 Canadian dollars, or approximately $78,000 to $156,000 in U.

Plot: In a future where citizens are forced to wear technology that tracks their actions 24/7, a cop (Clive Owen) hunts a serial killer, whose victims have all had dealings with a mysterious hacker (Amanda Seyfried), who’s off the grid. Review: Like a lot of Andrew Niccol’s recent work, Anon should be better than it actually is. That’s not a knock on the director, who’s... Read More...

Around these parts, much of the month will be devoted to Cannes coverage, but there’s still much to be unveiled in theaters, including perhaps the finest film of the year thus far.

Exclusive: One of the most obvious but routinely encountered hazards for a growing distributor is over-reach: buying or marketing beyond your means. So far, that’s a pitfall UK outfit Altitude Films has avoided with aplomb.
Set up by former Optimum Releasing founder Will Clarke in 2012, the carefully managed integrated firm, comprising distribution, sales and production, is coming off its biggest year to date, despite the challenging UK landscape. Four movies crossed $1M for the distribution arm in 2017: Moonlight (which took a company record $6M), Loving Vincent ($1.4M), The Florida Project ($1.3M) and Lady Macbeth (1.1M). Six of the company’s top ten movies have been released in the last 12 months.
Much of the growing distribution slate is made up of rising UK talent (Michael Pearce’s Toronto drama Beast is released in around 70 screens this weekend), festival favorites and commercially-minded documentaries...

That’s the hook of the upcoming sci-fi crime thriller “Anon,” starring Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried. In the first trailer for this film, premiering next month on Netflix, we are introduced to a world without crime. In the future, due to people having the ability to instantly recognize who you are based on a technology in your eyes, there is no privacy or anonymity.

"Who can hack a human being?" One more trailer for the indie sci-fi film Anon, written and directed by sci-fi storyteller Andrew Niccol. We posted another trailer earlier this year, and a new international trailer this week already. This new Us trailer from Netflix presents the story entirely differently - about hackers and hacking our augmented reality, and how one of them is getting away with murders by erasing memories. Clive Owen plays a cop investigating a series of unsolved murders, who meets a mysterious hacker woman known as "The Girl" - Amanda Seyfried. This also stars Colm Feore, Sonya Walger, Mark O'Brien, Joe Pingue, Iddo Goldberg, and Sebastian Pigott. This actually looks good, I'm planning to watch once it's available - starting in early May on Netflix. ‘Anon’ Trailer: Amanda Seyfried and Clive Owen Try to Survive in a World Where Privacy Doesn’t Exist
“Gattaca” and “In Time” director Andrew Niccol is sticking with the science-fiction genre in his upcoming feature, “Anon.” The high-concept thriller is set in a world where the government has eliminated privacy, which has resulted in total government surveillance on the public and de facto self-censorship. Clive Owen plays a police officer who becomes the target of a hacker named The Girl (Amanda Seyfried).
“Anon” marks a reunion between Seyfried and Niccol after “In Time” in 2011. The director’s last release, “Good Kill,” starred Ethan Hawke and premiered at the 2014 Venice Film Festival. “Anon” made headlines at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival when Netflix purchased U.S. and some foreign rights to the title for $4 million.
The streaming giant has not issued a release date for the film, but Altitude Films will be opening “Anon” in U.K. theaters May 11. The distributor has released an official trailer below.

The first trailer has been released for Andrew Niccol's upcoming sci-fi thriller Anon and it looks great! For those of you who aren't familiar with Niccol's work, he previously brought us films such as Gattaca, Lord of War, In Time, and Good Kill. I've enjoyed the films that he's made and this could be one of his better movies. The story is set in the near-future, there is no privacy or anonymity, where even private memories are recorded in an effort to cut down on crime. The movie stars Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried and this is the synopsis:
The story is set in a Soviet-style near-future where the government is trying to fight crime by eliminating privacy, thus creating total surveillance and de facto self-censorship. A police officer named Sal Frieland (Clive Owen) is a tough cop who is doing his best to fight crime in his city.

Clive Owen plays a cop investigating a series of unsolved murders, who meets a hacker woman known as "The Girl", played by Amanda Seyfried. She has no identity, no history and no record. Family animation is set to bow in 137 sites this weekend.
Sky’s first move into day-and-date ’Original Films’ in UK cinemas will kick off this weekend with family animation Monster Family, set to open in 137 sites this Friday (March 2).
The release will be made available to Sky’s TV customers on the same day as the planned theatrical roll-out via the paid-for subscription package Sky Cinema.
The number of sites programming the film is a record for a day-and-date release in the UK, surpassing the previous benchmark of 120 which was set by 45 Years when it went onto Curzon’s home cinema platform at the same time as its theatrical run.
However, the UK’s three largest multiplex chains, Vue, Odeon and Cineworld - which between them operate around 64% of UK cinema screens - are not programming Monster Family as they continue to adhere to traditional theatrical windows.
