Portrait of Mali

My spouse sometimes complains that we watch too many American- centric films (documentaries and movies). If you want something out of the North American/European context then this marvelous film should resolve that issue.

The on-site cinematography is marvelous. The music and interviews with various Mali musicians enthralling.

It took a lot of guts for Fatoumata Diawara to return to her native village and sing a song on the violence of FGM.

There is a short blurb on an imam preaching on what he believes constitutes good music. Why a religious person is giving his opinions on whether music should or should not be listened too - and more so why others would pay attention to this - is beyond my comprehension. I doubt he would approve of Lady Gaga, Madonna...
