Neon, Double Agent and the U.K.’s Film4 are partnering on the documentary “2073,” from “Amy” director Asif Kapadia.
A vague description of the film indicates that it will “tackle some of the biggest challenges imperiling our future.” The synopsis continues: “Kapadia’s decision to create a genre-bending thriller set in a dystopian future was inspired by Chris Marker’s iconic 1962 featurette ‘La Jetée’ about a time traveler who risks his life to change the course of history and save the future of humanity.”
The companies will co-finance and executive produce the project with Kapadia and George Chignell producing. Davis Guggenheim, Nicole Stott, and Jonathan Silberberg will act as executive producers for Concordia Studio alongside Riz Ahmed’s Left Handed Films.

The Way the Market’s Going

Compensation
Visual effects and animation studio Dneg, whose credits include “Dune” and “No Time to Die,” will pay enhanced overtime to its U.K. employees.
From October, Dneg will pay overtime at 1.5x rate to all U.K. staff in non-management positions for all incremental time that they are asked to work beyond the standard 40-hour week. The move will bring Dneg’s U.K. overtime policy in line with its studios in North America and applies across its film and episodic visual effects, Dneg Animation and ReDefine operations, including its artist, production, technology and support teams.
The decision is a departure from the existing U.K. industry norm, where employees are compensated for overtime with paid time off after a project is completed.
Dneg has won multiple awards over the years. In 2021 alone, the company won the visual effects BAFTA and Oscar for Christopher Nolan‘s “Tenet.”

The choices for Emmy’s music branch this year are overwhelming, with hundreds of series now available via broadcast, cable and streaming options. Here are six of the most talked-about possibilities for nomination in the original score categories.
The Flight Attendant
“The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max) featured one of the season’s most creative scores, courtesy of composer Blake Neely. At his initial meeting with producers, Neely remarked that he saw the hard-partying title character Cassie as “a broken child,” and thought “child instruments” such as toy pianos might make an interesting musical choice.
As Neely recalls: “Then I upped the ante and said, ‘How about only percussion?’” They loved the idea. Every musical sound in the eight-part series is a percussion instrument, from timpani and marimba to piano and tubular bells, all played by Neely.
“You start looking at things in your house differently,” he says. “My dishwasher, could I play that?...

More than 40 prominent U.K. film industry figures, including “Tenet” director Christopher Nolan and “Small Axe” filmmaker Steve McQueen, have written to U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak requesting further support for the beleaguered exhibition sector.
The letter in the Sunday Times, a follow up to the U.K. Cinema Association’s December 2020 ‘Keep the Magic Alive’ campaign, acknowledges the efforts of the U.K. government in helping cinemas stay afloat, but that these initiatives may not be enough.
The signatories also include “Maradona” director Asif Kapadia, “Slumdog Millionaire” filmmaker Danny Boyle, James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, and “Harry Potter” producer David Heyman. (A full list is below.)
“There is no doubt that if supported to survive, the sector will recover and once again thrive. But the need for direct financial support is pressing,” the letter says. “We recognize the support that government has already been able to provide.

Photo: 'Diego Maradona'/Attitude Film Distribution Asif Kapadia’s 'Diego Maradona' is another poignant documentary, this time about one of the greatest footballers (soccer players) of all time. It centers on Maradona’s time in Napoli during the late ‘80s and poignantly posits that moment as a symbol for his overarching life-story. The Beautiful Game As a football fan, Diego Maradona was an inherently fascinating watch - it doesn’t shy away from emphasising the genius of his football as much as his wild character. The footage on display is surprisingly cinematic (it was recorded by Maradona’s personal cameraman). As a result, the matches are more exciting than most feature film depictions of football. As well as showcasing the actual games, the footage gives an intriguing insight into the inner workings of a football club. There are various interviews with the Napoli president and conversations surrounding transfers,...

Diego Maradona, an Argentinian soccer player widely considered to be among the greatest to ever play the game, has died of a heart attack. He was 60.
The news was first reported Wednesday morning by the Argentinian newspaper Clarín. Maradona had recently left the hospital after undergoing brain surgery for a subdural hematoma.
During his 21-year career, Maradona was given the nickname “El Pibe de Oro” (“The Golden Boy”) and led Argentina to the World Cup title in 1986. Along with Pelé, Maradona was honored with the FIFA Player of the 20th Century award.
Maradona played for seven different clubs during his playing career, to go along with his 91 international appearances for team Argentina. He is most known for his time with Fc Barcelona and Napoli (full name Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli), and set the record — twice — for a transfer fee when he moved from Boca Juniors to Barcelona, and then from Barcelona to Napoli.

Two years ago, the Academy documentary branch had to grapple with a record 170 documentary feature submissions for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. This year, it’s not so bad: only 159 were entered. The short list of 15 will be announced, along with eight others, on December 16.
All year, branch members have been getting lists of secure online screeners available to watch on the Academy website, increasing in volume, with more to come. Each voter is assigned a list of about 22-23 films to screen, so they all get covered. But it’s a burden to see them all, so the ones with the most attention move to the top of the much-watch list.
Give the advantage to box-office hits that were made available earlier in the year such as Neon’s “The Biggest Little Farm” and “Apollo 11,” as well as high-profile titles from HBO (“Diego Maradona” and “The Apollo”), Netflix,...

Global sports icon and lauded soccer player Diego Maradona’s dramatic life intrigued Oscar and BAFTA winner director Asif Kapadia while he was still in film school. “It had an incredibly strong backstory and extremes of good and dark,” he recalls. More than 20 years later his feature documentary “Diego Maradona” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and this week screens at Sarajevo Film Festival. The documentary follows Maradona’s stint at Naples, as the charismatic star came into his own and mixed with a streetwise crowd.

The Cannes Film Festival competition began today with the premiere of Jim Jarmusch’s “The Dead Don’t Die,” but top North American distributors can’t afford to be distracted. They serve a market in which only the most carefully calibrated selections will thrive — and those who hesitate will almost certainly lose to the streaming buyers. With some of the best stuff already bought, theatrical distributors are forced to to look toward films that have yet to be shot.
Before the festival, HBO Sports scooped up “Diego Maradona,” British documentarian Asif Kapadia’s follow-up to Oscar-winning Cannes hit “Amy.” And after a 20-year symbiotic relationship, Spc acquired Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar’s “Pain & Glory” at the script stage two years ago, which now looks like an early contender for top prizes. Spc now has rights to all his films, and will book repertory Almodovar tributes in many cities around the film’s October opening.

The director of Senna and Amy on falling in love with his subjects, tackling Maradona, and how his films resemble pop art
London-born director Asif Kapadia is known for his “true fiction” documentaries: 2010’s groundbreaking Senna, about the Formula One icon Ayrton Senna; and Amy, on the short life of Amy Winehouse, which won the Oscar for best documentary feature in 2016. He is currently working on a film about another troubled genius, Diego Maradona. Before factual films, Kapadia made narrative dramas. His first feature, The Warrior, will be screened this summer as part of a Bafta Debuts tour, which showcases a handful of Bafta-winning debut films from leading British directors, such as Lynne Ramsay, Andrea Arnold and Steve McQueen.
The Warrior won two Baftas – for best debut and for outstanding British film in 2003 – but it’s been seen less than some of your other films. Do you think it stands the test of time?...
