[When Queen Victoria and Prince Albert first married, Albert was seen by the public to be a humourless German intellectual]
Piers Brendon: In Victorian England, there were all sorts of rather obscene lampoons, one of which, about the wedding night, went something like this: "Albert entered by Bushey, he advanced through Maidenhead, penetrated Virginia Water and left Staines behind". Not the sort of thing that you'd expect in Victorian England, but it was a reflection, I think, of the antipathy that Albert had created.
They had nine children and spending time with the royal children meant Victoria got to spend less time with her beloved Albert and more nights of passion with him.
On the other hand Albert was well aware that the spirit of revolution was rampaging through Europe and he saw the need for the British Royal Family to set an example to gain respect from the people, maybe show a more middle class face of the family rather than some kind of absolute rulers even though Britain was a parliamentary democracy.
Albert was more hands on when it came to raising his children but the first episode concentrated more on Albert and Victoria's romance with the children kept more in the background.
