What3Words is a proprietary geocoding system developed by What3Words LTD. based in London, England. The system assigns three fixed words from the English dictionary to each grid square on a map, each grid being about 3 square meters (9.8 feet). The idea being three words are much easier and more accurate to convey than a long series of numbers, it is mainly designed to help find locations that do not have a street address, like remote areas. For example the company is located at 10 Downy Street in London, the GPS coordinates for that address are: 51.5034° N, 0.1276° W; the corresponding grid words are: "slurs.this.shark". The company has an app that when downloaded to a mobile device has the entire database of grid words, allowing a person to find their approximate location even if they do not have an internet connection. The system is being used by several agencies, in February of 2020 a search and rescue team in Scotland was the first to use the system to find a group of lost and injured hikers; later that month it was used in Australia to rescue an injured person in a remote part of the Outback. As of September 2021, more than 85 percent of British emergency services teams use what3words, including the Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade; it was also adopted by the Los Angeles County Fire Department in July of 2021.
