The official trailer for Apple TV+’s Fancy Dance sees Lily Gladstone’s Jax on a mission to find her missing sister, as the risk of losing custody of her niece, Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson), looms.
Following her sister’s disappearance, Jax and Roki have been scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma, according to the film’s description. As Roki prepares for the upcoming powwow, the women hit the road to try to find Roki’s mother in time for the event.
“What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system,” the logline reads.
Gladstone and Deroy-Olson star alongside Ryan Begay, Crystle Lightning, Audrey Wasilewski and Shea Whigham.
Fancy Dance premiered to critical acclaim at 2023’s Sundance Film Festival but didn’t receive distribution until over a year later.

Lily Gladstone’s “Fancy Dance” is finally set to debut to a wide audience.
After Gladstone championed the indie film at the 2023 IndieWire Honors, the feature was acquired by Apple Original Films. Erica Tremblay co-wrote and directed “Fancy Dance,” which follows Jax (Gladstone) and her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Jax is searching for her sister, Roki’s mother, after Roki’s grandfather Frank (Shea Whigham) has filed to take custody in her absence. Jax and Roki embark on a roadtrip to find Roki’s mother in time for a powwow. The search becomes a “deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system,” per the film’s synopsis.

"Everybody's out looking for me, who's looking for my sister?" Apple TV has finally unveiled the official trailer for a film titled Fancy Dance, which has been stuck in release limbo for the last year or more. This originally premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, a full six months before Lily Gladstone's Killers of the Flower Moon premiered in Cannes. Many critics say her performance in Fancy Dance is even better, but it hasn't ever been released since 2023. Now it's finally set for a theatrical + streaming debut this summer. The bond between an Indigenous girl and her aunt proves stronger than ever when their loved one goes missing. Following her sister's disappearance, a Native American hustler kidnaps her niece from the child's white grandparents and sets out for the state powwow in hopes of keeping what is left of their family intact. Starring the award-winning Lily Gladstone as Jax,...

Just before Killers of the Flower Moon set her on the path towards an Oscar nomination / robbery, Lily Gladstone debuted another film concerning conflicts between Indigenous and white communities. Erica Tremblay’s 2023 Sundance premiere Fancy Dance is arriving some 18 months later from Apple, who stream it on June 28, and with this comes a trailer.
As John Fink said in his review, “Fancy Dance is a rich character study that explores the contemporary impact of permanently marginalizing a community with limited options. Other communities and economies emerge and potentially entrap someone like Roki who, as a teen, tries reconciling a sense of foundation while having little to grab onto. Above all, this is a well-written drama that feels like an authentic, at times painful exploration of a community from a filmmaker that knows this place all too well.”
Find the preview below, also featuring Shea Whigham and Isabel Deroy-Olson:

Putting one’s heart and soul into their art is nothing new, Martin Scorsese being one of the many to find solace in that. It takes a great amount of dedication to bring out the best that a movie and script can provide. Penning it down and then executing the idea is a process that makes the film personal on its own. However, there are times when those personal films include an actual touch of the filmmakers.

With time, the director came to learn the art of filmmaking. One that takes patience, resilience, and a great amount of understanding. Especially taking into consideration how pieces of oneself get left behind as souvenirs for the film, making them exceptional. However, sometimes that can also make such movies impossible to come to.

Martin Scorsese (who may or may not be making a Frank Sinatra biopic soon) is our greatest living filmmaker. I don't think that's a controversial or even hyperbolic statement; it's just true. The man lives and breathes cinema, and he has one masterpiece after another to his name. But it all started with "Mean Streets." To be clear: "Mean Streets" was not Scorsese's first feature film. His debut film was 1967's "Who's That Knocking at My Door," which began as a student film before Scorsese reworked it into a feature. He followed that up in 1972 with "Boxcar Bertha," a crime flick produced by legendary B-movie auteur Roger Corman.
It was "Boxcar Bertha" that would lead directly to "Mean Streets." The story goes that when Scorsese's friend, mentor, and fellow director John Cassavetes saw "Boxcar Bertha," he told Scorsese: "You've just spent a year of your life making a piece of sh*t.

It’s been decades since Martin Scorsese was proclaimed one of the best directors of all time — and to this day he doesn’t lose the ground having proved his status with last year’s masterpiece Killers of the Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone.
However, artistic genius often goes hand in hand with stubborn and intractable nature — and Scorsese’s ex colleagues from Warner Bros. had a big chance to see this with their own eyes.
Back in 2006, Scorsese released his epic crime thriller The Departed — the film eventually got to be commercially and critically acclaimed classic of the genre, earning almost $300 million in the box office with the initial budget of $90 million and taking home four Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
To many people’s surprise, the almost 20-year-old film to this day remains Scorsese’s one and only directorial win.

After his years-long litany of protestations against Donald Trump, Oscar-winner Robert De Niro tried to be more measured, but even more urgent, in his criticism of the former president this week. In an interview with Stephanie Ruhle on MSNBC’s The 11th Hour, the actor said, “I’m tired of calling him names…He is really, genuinely a sick person.”
Asked by Ruhle if he would ever play Trump onscreen, De Niro nearly cut off the question he was so quick to answer, “Never. There’s nothing about him — there’s not one redeeming thing in him that I can see.”
To those who would hold their noses and vote for Trump despite obvious failings, the actor said, “I...

We’re already in the fifth month of 2024, but new data about the 2023 box office is still coming in and we’ve learned some interesting things!
Deadline has revealed the five biggest box office flops from last year and Disney surprisingly has four of those movies.
The outlet explained that Apple Original Films movies are not included on this ranking as Apple is “a tech company, of which content is a fraction of their revenues.” They added that “losses made by Apple on movies are seen as advertising expenses to drive eyeballs to its Ott service.”
Movies like Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon could have potentially ended up on here though.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

The most important rule of a Deadpool movie is, never play by the rules. Fourth walls are to be broken, tropes are to be dismantled, and obvious choices are to be ignored at all costs. And so, the upcoming third big-screen outing for Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With A Mouth is ripping up that rulebook once again, not just bringing back the katana-wielding chaos agent for the regular threequel, but launching him firmly into the realm of Marvel Studios, and pairing him – at long, long last – with none other than Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Get ready for the ultimate Marvel team-up in Deadpool & Wolverine, a bloody buddy comedy like no other – it’s going to be non-stop mutant mayhem.

Lily Gladstone is one of the eight jurors who have just been announced for the Cannes Main Competition. After success at last year's festival with Killers of the Flower Moon, the Oscar nominee feels like a logical choice. Indeed, most of the jury comprises artists who have found acclaim at the Croisette. There's a former Palme winner, a Jury Prize victor, the co-writer of a Palme d'Or recipient, stars of various pictures that have screened there, and more. All things considered, Greta Gerwig is probably the least familiar with Cannes red carpets and the screen of the Lumière. But after three solo directorial credits of such cultural prominence, it's easy to see why she's this year's Jury President.

We’re just two weeks away from the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and this morning the august French institution revealed who will determine the winners of this year’s awards. A cross-section of international talent will join “Barbie” and “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig, who will lead the panel, in an effort to undoubtedly compare apples to oranges and try to make sense of a diverse slate of films from directors like David Cronenberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Sean Baker, Ali Abbasi, and many others.
Lily Gladstone, who won several Best Actress awards last year (but not the Oscar!) for her revolutionary turn in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” is the other American joining Gerwig. The actress, currently seen on FX/Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” is returning to Cannes one year after Martin Scorsese and Apple Original Films brought “Flower Moon” to the French Riviera festival for its out-of-competition debut.

Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project has picked up French distribution, meaning certain streamers are likely out of the running – but more could still be in with a shot.
Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis distribution saga rumbles on, with the Apocalypse Now director somewhat inexplicably struggling to find a home for his $120m passion project.
Yesterday, we reported that the film had managed to pick up French cinema distribution with Le Pacte – an important milestone, since a French theatrical release is required for a film to screen in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
As Variety points out, though, the Le Pacte deal does mean Netflix are unlikely to still be in the running to buy the film. France has a strict 15-month exclusivity window which prevents a film from heading straight from cinemas onto streaming services. Netflix, which remains a big fan of their simultaneous global release strategy, hasn...

One part of the Megalopolis distribution puzzle could be close to falling into place in France.
The country’s Le Point magazine reported on Tuesday that Paris-based distributor Le Pacte had acquired French rights for Francis Ford Coppola’s $120M self-financed epic ahead of its world premiere in Competition at Cannes.
Contacted by Deadline, Le Pacte CEO Jean Labadie played down the reports but did not deny talks, saying: “We don’t have the film yet. Nothing is signed.”
Deadline has also reached out to Coppola and his reps.
Speculation around French release plans for Megalopolis had been brewing ever since its Cannes Competition slot was announced by Delegate General Thierry Frémaux at the festival’s press conference on April 11.
Under Cannes regulations, films selected for Competition must release theatrically in France and cannot debut first on a streamer in the country.

In the run-up to its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola’s 135-minute epic “Megalopolis” is on track to sell to a French distributor, Le Pacte.
The indie company, presided over by veteran French distributor Jean Labadie, is currently negotiating a deal. It seems like an odd match for such a pricey movie considering Le Pacte’s fairly modest size. Although the company has had recent hits, including Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Maiwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry,” it may not be able to splurge on P&a. Coppola’s lawyer Barry Hirsch, who also served as a producer, has been courting studios and streamers to secure a splashy deal with a P&a commitment amounting to more than half of the film’s $120 budget, according to industry insiders. The pending deal with Le Pacte suggests that the film, which Coppola self-financed, might...

When the team at Watcher Entertainment announced that they would be leaving YouTube in order to post content exclusively on their own subscription-only page, they clearly thought that fans would be excited about the move.
They were very, very wrong.
The backlash against the digital media studio -- which was founded in 2020 by a trio of former Buzzfeed employees -- was swift and immediate.
Usually, an uproar from a company's customer base is the sort of thing that's met with a boilerplate apology and little else.
But in this case, the outcry on Reddit and on the group's previous YouTube posts wound up having a significant impact.
Earlier this week, Watcher's three founders -- Steven Lim, Ryan Bergara, and Shane Madej -- made a video in which they reacted to the strong backlash against their unexpected business decision.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are two of the biggest titans of cinema. DiCaprio is known for his charisma and flawless acting while Scorsese’s gritty realism is unmatched by anyone else. Magic has happened whenever these two worlds have collided in movies like “The Departed” & “The Wolf of Wall Street”.

Now, the pair are set to reunite for a project that’s sure to generate a buzz – a biopic about the legendary singer Frank Sinatra. However, with any highly anticipated film, there are always those who express doubt. Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have collaborated on a number of projects together as actor and director. Beginning their partnership with Gangs of New York, the duo went on to work on films such as The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the recent Killers of the Flower Moon. The duo are also rumored to collaborate again on a Frank Sinatra biopic.
While the two have worked together on many projects, they have also developed projects that have never seen the light of day. One of those was apparently a biographical drama on Alexander, The Great. The two never got to make it, but the duo may have no regrets about it as Colin Farrell’s version of the film ended up almost costing the actor his career.

Cillian Murphy obtained one of acting’s most coveted achievements when he won an Oscar for his leading role in “Oppenheimer.” But his award season run for the acclaimed Christopher Nolan film didn’t end with his big night at the Dolby Theater. Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy repeated his Best Actor win at the Academy Awards for Oppenheimer with a win for Lead Actor. In the supporting categories, Paul Mescal won for All of Us Strangers and Alison Oliver topped all for Saltburn.

Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” had it easy this year.
He took the early lead in Gold Derby’s official Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor. He widened that lead in the following months. He then swept the precursor awards. And despite landing in a powerhouse lineup that included Sterling K. Brown in “American Fiction,” Robert De Niro in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Ryan Gosling in “Barbie” and Mark Ruffalo in “Poor Things,” there was a “near zero” chance of Downey not being called to the stage to accept the Academy Award.
But not every past recipient of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar has cruised to victory like Downey. There have been numerous nail-biters over the years.
I recall one contest in particular from three decades ago. The 1993 fabulous five included first-time nominee Leonardo DiCaprio as the autistic younger brother of Johnny Depp in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Ralph Fiennes...

Taylor Swift debuted her “Fortnight” music video on YouTube Friday evening, along with lyric videos for both that song and the rest of her new surprise double-album, “The Tortured Poets Department.” The video features “Dead Poets Society” actors Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles in cameos, whom she joked about in social media posts where she shared the creative inspiration behind the striking, largely black-and-white clip.
“I’m still laughing from getting to work with the coolest guys on earth, Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles,” Swift wrote — perhaps also chuckling at her own self-referential cameos. She then added an explicit nod to the clear inspiration for her new album’s title: “(tortured poets, meet your colleagues from down the hall, the dead poets).”

The Taylor Swift drops just keep coming.
At midnight, Swift released her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department” — and then announced two hours later that it’s a surprise double album, leaving casual fans and Swifites alike to spend the day decoding who the songs are about. (How many Friday afternoon Slack messages were devoted to parsing if a song was about Swift exes Joe Alwyn or Matty Healy?) And then came the album’s first music video for single “Fortnite,” co-written by and featuring Post Malone.
In addition to “Dead Poets Society” (note that neither title uses an apostrophe) alums Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles, the music video boasts another big name: Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”).
This isn’t the first time Prieto has collaborated with Swift. The cinematographer previously worked on the 2020 music videos for Swift’s songs “The Man,” “Cardigan,” and “Willow.

When rumors began circulating that Target would officially be removing every piece of physical media from their stores, it really wasn’t all that much of a surprise. After all, Best Buy – once a go-to for all of our DVD and CD needs – cleared their shelves this year. Think about it: what does your local Target’s Blu-ray section look like? It’s probably not what it used to be, no matter how limited. Heck, the last time I went to Target, the DVD/Blu-ray section was just the end of an aisle not that far from the Chex Mix. But the store has now responded to the speculation, saying they won’t be entirely doing away with discs.
According to a spokesperson for Target (via IGN), the primary resource for shoppers will be online, although you can still buy certain releases in the store. “Based on our guests’ shopping patterns and broader industry trends,...

According to Zack Snyder, one of the most significant Dceu storylines seems to have originated from none other than Oscar-winning star Leonardo DiCaprio. The 49-year-old actor was once considered for the role of Lex Luthor, Superman’s greatest enemy. In an exclusive interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the director disclosed that he had a meeting with the Titanic star to discuss the role in his 2016 superhero flick, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
However, Jesse Eisenberg ultimately won the role. Snyder also recalled that DiCaprio came up with the plan to pit Henry Cavill’s Superman against the Justice League. Sadly, the Dceu timeline came to an end in 2023 (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom), capping ten years of superhero films that started with Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013).

Leonardo DiCaprio As Lex Luthor? Zack Snyder Considered Him For ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’
Before asking Jesse Eisenberg to rock a bald head, Zack Snyder considered Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of Lex Luthor.
While chatting recently with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder admitted that he discussed the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with the Oscar-winning star of Killers of the Flower Moon.
“I think, in the end, he was like, ‘eh, I don’t know.’ But he was really smart about the material and really smart about the character,” said Snyder, who added that DiCaprio “had a lot of great ideas, actually, just in the meeting … I think he was the one that mentioned to me this idea about Superman fighting the Justice League at some point.”
Snyder went on to say he also talked to Adam Driver about the role of the cunning billionaire.

While Snyder ultimately went with Jesse Eisenberg as Lex, starring opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman, he revealed the Titanic star “had a lot of great ideas, actually, just in the meeting.
