Since FX moved under the Disney umbrella in 2019, it has sometimes been difficult to find its programming; I’m a professional and I’m often stymied when it comes to which FX shows actually air on FX and which are Hulu exclusives. But FX shows have still felt like FX shows.
The new FX-produced drama Class of ’09 is a puzzlement. One of those Hulu-only offerings, Class of ’09 surely has the air and aura of an FX show, from its sturdy, cinematic production values to a cast topped by FX veterans Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) and Kate Mara (A Teacher) to its creation by writer Tom Rob Smith (The Assassination of Gianni Versace). But what it feels like? Well, it feels like a broadcast TV show from a decade ago — specifically like ABC’s Quantico, a drama remembered largely by Priyanka Chopra Jonas devotees.

Two veteran producers with ties to Fox are teaming up for a drama project at the broadcast network.
The Resident co-creator and executive producer Amy Holden Jones and Matt Nix (Burn Notice) — who just signed a broadcast direct deal with Fox — are behind Archie & Pete, a buddy-cop drama whose logline reads a bit like a gender-reversed Bones. The project comes from Fox Entertainment Studios and is being developed on a script-to-series model.
Archie & Pete follows an explosive, rule-breaking, fearless female detective with no filter who enlists the help of a polite and gentle brainiac who studies the biology of evil to solve cases for the Los Angeles Violent Crimes Unit. Jones is writing the script and will executive produce with Nix.
For Jones, the new project is in second position to The Resident, which is awaiting word on its future after wrapping its sixth season on Fox in January. Should...

The streamer announced Friday that it has ordered The I-Land, October Faction, and Warrior Nun to series, and has even offered up some casting details for one of them.

"They soon discover this world is not as it seems. Faced with the island’s extreme psychological and physical challenges, they must rise to their better selves -- or die as their worst ones."

Television writer/producer David Slack has laid out a writer’s manifesto on Twitter, telling male television writers if they didn’t get a staff position this season, it was because they were out-competed, not because of any #metoo movement backlash.
“If you didn’t get staffed, it’s because you got outcompeted, plain & simple,” Slack wrote on Twitter. “Other writers, both men & women, had better samples, better recommendations, & better meetings. It’s okay. I’ve had years where I got outcompeted, too.”
Slack spent the last two seasons on CBS’s McGyver, serving as co-executive producer and executive producer. His resume includes executive producing credits on Person of Interest, Lie To Me, The Forgotten, Law & Order, and Teen Titans. It also includes an ill-fated foray with Apb, a crime drama he created but was executive producer on just one show, departing over alleged creative differences with Fox on the show’s direction.

TV trends come and go, but who would’ve thought that, with all the focus on inclusion in the past few years, there would now be an uptick of, as IndieWire’s Michael Schneider puts it, “white dudes in crisis” on TV?
To fill the diversity void, the networks have added actors of color to supporting roles. It’s heartening to see that this has created a more realistic picture on TV of what the world looks like, such as the marriage between Zach Braff’s and Tiya Sircar’s characters on “Alex Inc.” representing the growing number of mixed-race marriages in America. Unfortunately, it’s also disappointing to see so many of these favorite actresses get shunted from one supporting role to the next.

Though it’s never quite hit the dizzying box office heights of, say, Captain America: Civil War or even Suicide Squad, Fox’s X-Men universe is currently bursting at the seams with content, and it wasn’t too long ago that the studio nailed down release plans for three of its biggest 2018 tentpoles: Deadpool 2, New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
Those ambitious plans are about to spill over on to the small screen, too, via The Gifted, Bryan Singer and Matt Nix’s star-studded family drama that thrusts two ordinary parents (Amy Acker, Stephen Moyer) into extraordinary circumstances upon discovering that their two teenagers – namely Lauren (Gotham’s Natalie Alyn Lind) and Andy (Percy Hynes White) – boast mutant abilities.
What follows is a desperate fight for survival, as Acker and Moyer’s parents are forced to go on the run from shady government forces in order to protect their nearest and dearest.

Fox is aggressively growing their X-Men cinematic universe, and after the massive success of films like Logan and Deadpool, it’s easy to see why. With projects such as New Mutants, X-Force, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Deadpool 2 all cramming up the pipeline, there’s certainly a lot to look forward to for fans of the franchise, but it’s not only on the big screen that the mutants are popping up.
The studio’s been making the push into television as well, and after premiering the excellent Legion earlier this year, they’re now looking to bring us yet another X-Men show in the form of The Gifted. How exactly it’ll tie into the films is still unclear, but there is expected to be some kind of connection and from what we understand, the series centres on a suburban couple (Amy Acker, Stephen Moyer) who discover that their children possess mutant abilities.

It’s hard to tell at this point which medium has more comic book adaptations: film or TV. Either way, we can at least enjoy the fact that the filmmakers are doing a pretty solid job of giving each franchise its own unique flavor, so as not to wear out the genre prematurely. For example, take a look at Marvel shows like Legion and Daredevil. They are two completely different entities with completely different tones, styles, and target audiences. Just as not every single comic book is made to appeal to the same audience as another book, these shows are being carefully catered to their respective audiences.
Yet another series in the long list of shows comes in the form of the Fox series The Gifted. The series is notable for following mutants — you know, in the vein of the X-Men and all that — but it’s also notable for...

The Gifted, Marvel and Fox’s upcoming X-Men family drama, has landed a full series order and to celebrate, both studios have unveiled the electrifying first teaser.
Hatched by screenwriter Matt Nix and X-Men mainstay Bryan Singer (Days of Future Past, Apocalypse), The Gifted was undoubtedly viewed as one of the more high-profile pilots going into the new season, so it’s small wonder why Fox has wasted no time in ordering the ambitious pitch to series.
Centering on a suburban couple (Amy Acker, Stephen Moyer), Fox’s family drama kicks into high gear once those unassuming – and, crucially, powerless – discover that their children possess mutant abilities. Forced to hit the road in fear of a hostile governmental force, The Gifted will see our nuclear family buddy up with an underground network of mutants, who cobble together as a means to survive. It was another Monday primetime split: NBC topped the key 18-49 demographic with “The Voice,” while ABC finished first among total viewers thanks to “Dancing With the Stars.” Ho-hum.
Elsewhere, the season finale Fox’s “APB” ticked up from last week in the main demo, and the broadcaster tied CBS’ prime average by that important Nielsen metric.
NBC was first in ratings with a 1.5 rating/6 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in total viewers with an average of 7.7 million, according to preliminary numbers.
