"Was hat uns bloß so ruiniert", which basically means "What ruined us so much" is an Austrian German-language film from 2016, last year, that focuses on a handful of couples planning to become parents at the very same time, all while not giving up on their lifestyles from before getting pregnant and before having their significant others get pregnant. The writer and director is Marie Kreutzer and she has some other mildly known films under her belt. This one we have here is also not gonna be really famous, but it will be among her most known efforts I predict. The movie runs for 90 minutes, slightly over with credits and is basically a relationship drama with some comedic moments. I personally saw it more as a drama than a comedy, but this is really up to everybody personally to decide. Sadly I must say that the story as a whole was never on a level where it convinced me in terms of story-telling and the actors also did not leave a lasting impression on me. Not one of them even. I think this is a film that does not have any definite weaknesses or letdowns, but also does not stand out in any area and that's just not enough. The actors all seem a bit interchangeable and I personally struggled with not really ending up finding any of the characters likable. This may have to do with how flawed they were for all kinds of reasons, but as the story also did not make me curious about what happens next, it would have helped to have somebody to actually cheer for. It is a realistic movie in some ways, even if not in all scenes, but honestly with the really strong level of Austrian filmmaking these days and for years now I must say that this film is nowhere near this level or the best Austria has to offer. I disagree with the awards attention and give this one a thumbs-down. Watch something else instead.
