Hello, dear readers! Tomorrow, we kick off a brand new month, which means we have a whole new batch of horror and sci-fi headed to VOD, Digital, and Streaming platforms in the next few weeks to enjoy as we do our best to stay inside and beat the heat of these dog days of summer. With that in mind, we have a lot of great films and series to look forward to, including the Fear Street trilogy on Netflix, The Tomorrow War on Amazon, Josh Ruben’s Werewolves Within (you can read my review Here), Megan Fox in Till Death (a movie this writer really dug), and a handful of great indie horror is heading to Shudder throughout July, too, including The Boy Behind the Door (another film that I really enjoyed during last year’s Fantastic Fest).
Of course, this is only a sample of all the great genre...

Rlje Films will release A Nightmare Wakes, the screen writing and directorial debut of Nora Unkel, on VOD, Digital HD and DVD on July 6th. We have two (2) copies of the gothic horror to give away to our readers in the U.S. A Nightmare Wakes is based on the timeless novel and the birth of one of cinema’s most iconic monsters. While composing her famous novel “Frankenstein,” Mary Shelley descends into an opium-fueled fever dream and carries on a torrid love affair at a remote lake house. As she writes, the characters of her novel come to life and begin to plague her relationship, forcing everyone—including herself—to question her sanity. Our own Peter Martin caught A Nightmare Wakes when it premiered on...

Few novels have had as much impact on the history of modern literature and popular thought as Frankenstein. Nora Unkel’s A Nightmare Wakes is the latest take on its creation, but it’s very different in tone from those that have gone before. Writer/director Nora Unkel joined me to reflect on her own creative process and a pre-pandemic experience of isolation that led her to think about the book in a different way.
“ I started writing this eight years ago,” she tells me. “I had gotten a copy of Frankenstein that I was reading while trapped in my apartment during Hurricane Sandy. All I had was candles and the copy of Frankenstein, and I started reading it. But the first thing, obviously, that I read was Mary's own foreword to it at the beginning of the novel and the foreword in which...

Alix Wilton Regan’s main success so far in her career has come in the world of video games, having lent her vocal abilities to gaming franchises ranging from Assassin’s Creed, to Dragon Age to recently playing Keanu Reeves’ partner in Cyberpunk 2077. But that could soon change, and her face is likely to become just as recognisable as her voice, if her latest turn if anything to go by, as she impresses greatly in a nuanced display as Mary Shelley, in A Nightmare Wakes.
We had the pleasure of speaking to the London-based actress to discuss this project in great length, as well as looking back over another accomplished turn alongside none other than Glenn Close in The Wife. We also speak about her history in voice over work, and on what the future may hold, and just how she’s managed to get by across the events of the last 12 months.

To my knowledge, despite numerous films based on the story of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, their hadn’t been many about Shelley’s own life. But in 2017 came the film Mary Shelley, in which Elle Fanning played the author, and now in 2021 A Nightmare Wakes comes to Shudder. This movie covers the true story of the part of her life where she had an affair with a married man and fell pregnant with his child, all while trying to write the famous novel Frankenstein.
It’s no surprise at all that A Nightmare Wakes is a gothic period drama that occasionally leans towards the horror side of things. This isn’t full of gore or jump scares, there’s more an underlying sense of unease which comes...

The Cannes’ Film Market – in co-operation with the Fantasia International Film Festival will, for the third year, present the Frontières Platform for genre film projects and works in progress, running May 18-19.
Over the two days, Cannes Film Market will host two platforms for the 14 selected productions: Proof of Concept presentations for those still in financing stages, and a Buyers Showcase for films in post-production or recently completed.
Six features will participate in this year’s Buyer’s Showcase, where representatives will screen footage to sales agents, distributors and festival programmers. Meanwhile, eight projects which participated in the Frontières Finance & Packaging Forum in Helsinki this past February will offer up teasers at the Proof of Concept Presentations.
This year the event will also give out two new awards, the Frontières Warner Music Supervision Award and the Frontières Post Control VFX Boost Award.

For the past six years, genre moviemakers and moneymen have congregated for long weekends at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, taking part in the Frontières Co-Production Marketplace. Founded in 2012, the market was conceived as a place for horror/fantasy/action auteurs — both established names and newcomers — to pitch projects to potential backers and take part in various networking events.
A highlight of the Market is the opening-day pitch session, in which selected directors, writers, and producers offer multimedia presentations of their nascent features. At the very first Frontières, this event spawned Anouk Whissell, Francois Simard, and Yoann-Karl Whissell’s exuberant futuristic actioner “Turbo Kid”; subsequent movies that took their first steps to fruition there include Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie’s cult/monster horror film “The Void”; Caroline Labrèche and Steeve Léonard’s science-fiction thriller “Radius,” which premiered at this year’s Fantasia; and Jenn Wexler’s upcoming punk-slasher opus “The Ranger.

Frontières, the Fantasia International Film Festival’s annual film co-production market, has announced its first wave of projects for the ninth edition, which takes place from July 20 to July 23 in Montreal. Among the projects that will participate in the co-production market is the zombie film “George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead.” The project was written by Romero and Matt Birman, who is attached to direct.
Cannes: Neon and Vice Buy U.S. Rights to Harmony Korine’s ‘The Beach Bum’
“Road of the Dead” is the next zombie film following Romero’s last three movies as a director: “Survival of the Dead,” “Diary of the Dead” and “Land of the Dead.” Birman served as second unit director on all three movies, and has worked as a stunt coordinator and stuntman for more than three decades.
“Road of the Dead” originated as an original pitch from Birman roughly 10 years ago.
