"Cherchez la femme" or "Some Like It Veiled" is a French French-language live action film, from 2017, I could say last year now, a very recent release that deals with the subject of Islam vs. Western civilisation and especially with the wearing of burqas. But still, in my opinion, it really is all about the comedy. The moments it tries to be more serious or make an impact on women's rights, it comes really close to failing, such as the very end too when realism is just completely absent when the seemingly conventional muslim accepts the male protagonist right away as her sister's boyfriend despite all the stuff he did before that. Or when we hear the male central character say on one occasion how he read the Koran so much to better understand other characters. But luckily the comedy is better. Even if they are going over the top on some occasions, which is not too surprising though given the quantity of jokes that is almost permanent, it is a funny watch most of the time. Sometimes rather for the easily entertained, but sometimes also wit and depth included. There wasn't really a performance that was a real stand-out, but there also isn't anybody in here who sucked from the cast. Non-French audiences will probably not know any cast members here as I am a big German film buff who knows nobody. What is most memorable is perhaps Camélia Jordana's stunning looks. What else can you say. Yeah don't be looking for something very realistic, impactful or deep and you will enjoy this one. It has the potential to be among the best guilty pleasure films of 2017. It's awkward often, but extremely entertaining at its very best moments. I may not have enjoyed it as much as some other audience members during my surprisingly full showing, almost sold out, but I still give it a thumbs-up and there is as little thinking involved in this decision as there is in watching this film. Go see it, not a must-watch and not a film that really needs to be seen on the big screen, but a nice pick for a DVD night, perhaps rather for females than males. Go for it.
