John McVicar died on 6 September 2022 of a heart attack, aged 82. He was a seasoned ex-convict who turned his hand from armed robbery to a career in journalism, writing about crime and justice for the Guardian, the New Statesman and Spiked. However, this biopic is not about McVicar, the autodidact. Instead, it is a crime film about McVicar’s 1968 prison break that’s told with an austere, turn-of-the-’80s aesthetic comparable to Scum, The Black Panther and The Long Good Friday.
Roger Daltrey’s presence may raise questions about McVicar’s seriousness, but this isn’t a lazy rock star vehicle — Daltrey assumes the role with a sinewy attitude that doesn’t want for credibility. Credible too are McVicar’s fellow inmates and the staff who corral them at Hmp Durham, where life is stark but not without goodwill. There is a fair amount of camaraderie, in fact, with conflict rarely going beyond coarse words.

In the spring of 2020, two films starring Daniel Radcliffe came out, almost back-to-back.
In Escape From Pretoria, he played Tim Jenkin, the real-life anti-apartheid activist and former political prisoner who in 1978 was part of a daring and successful breakout — using secretly made wooden keys — from a South African jail.
In Guns Akimbo, he played Miles, a computer programmer in a bonkers near-future who wakes up one morning to find that a criminal kingpin’s gang of henchmen — including a masked guy called Fuckface — had bloodily bolted guns onto each of his hands.
For those who had been keeping an eye on Radcliffe’s post-Harry Potter career, this quick-fire double of taut historical prison thriller and insane action-comedy sci-fi felt like the perfect summary as he neared almost a decade since leaving one of the world’s most successful movie franchises.

Universal’s Jurassic World Dominion bit off a healthy 53 million during its opening in China over the weekend, according to estimates from regional consultancy Artisan Gateway. Although that pales in comparison to the performances of Hollywood tentpoles in the recent pre-pandemic past, it was a solid start given current market conditions in China, where an estimated 23 percent of cinemas remain closed because of Covid lockdowns.
Dominion‘s predecessor, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, earned more than double when it opened in 2018, taking 112 million in its first three days. But Universal should perhaps count itself lucky in the current circumstances. The second and third-biggest Hollywood openings this year in China were The Batman with 12.1 million and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore at just 10 million. Several other top-earning U.S. titles, such as Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, have...

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Luke Bracey and Brittany Snow have signed on to star in Tom Chilcoat’s debut feature, Big Nickel, with principal photography kicking off in the U.S this winter.
Co-written by Chilcoat and David Birke, the thriller centers on Charlie (Bracey), a charismatic Army recruiter, who is tasked with signing the “big fish” for a promotion. The only person standing in his way is Erik, a disturbed ex-vet that Charlie convinced to enlist years before. A dangerous man with a bone to pick, Erik will not be satisfied until Charlie has paid a heavy price—and as pressure mounts, Charlie is ultimately forced to re-examine his dubious methods, facing a thunderous reckoning of accountability.
A Traction and Arclight Films production, Big Nickel is produced by Traction’s Jason Tamasco and Zak Kristofek. Executive producers include Arclight Films’ Gary Hamilton, Ryan Hamilton and Ying Ye.
A native of Australia, Bracey is best known for turns in Netflix original rom-com Holidate, Warner Bros. and Lionsgate’s Point Break remake, Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate’s Oscar-winning war film Hacksaw Ridge and acclaimed Hulu miniseries, Little Fires Everywhere.
Rising to fame following her appearance on NBC drama series American Dreams, Snow’s TV credits include Ryan Murphy’s Nip/Tuck, David E. Kelly’s Harry’s Law, The CW’s musical comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Fox’s Almost Family.
On the film side, the actress is internationally recognized for her turn as Chloe in Universal Studios’ Pitch Perfect franchise. Additional big screen credits include The Pacifier, John Tucker Must Die, Prom Night and Hairspray. Most recently, Snow produced and starred in the comedic feature, Hooking Up, also starring in Netflix feature Someone Great, produced by Paul Feig.
Bracey is represented in the U.S. by CAA, Fourward, and attorney Michael Schenkman of Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher. In Australia, the actor is repped by Morrissey Management. Snow is repped by The Gersh Agency and Principal Entertainment.

While Dollhouse launched five years ago, and the Seriously Red screenplay by Krew Boylan has been in the fold, we can tell you that Byrne will be part of the newly announced ensemble cast along with her Emmy-winning partner Bobby Cannavale and Daniel Webber. Arclight Films has boarded to handle worldwide distribution rights with Gracie Otto (The Last Impresario) directing.
In the rowdy and rambunctious musical comedy, Red (played by Boylan) is at a crossroads in her life. A vivacious and hilarious redhaired woman grappling with high expectations and low self-esteem, she pours herself a cup of ambition and trades her 9 to 5 career in real estate for a life under the spotlight as a Dolly Parton impersonator.

“In 2020, these actors have gone from all work stopping, thinking they may never work again to now being presented as some of the most promising of their generation – what a roller coaster! “There are a lot of people looking for content right now,” said Brian Beckmann, CFO of Arclight Films. ”We’ve had nine months with very few productions getting off the ground… so we’re going to run into a supply and demand issue.

Due to make its world premiere at October’s Adelaide Film Festival, Chasing Wonders follows a 12 year old, whose sense of adventure and imagination runs wild, fueled by his maternal grandfather’s (Olmos) encouragement to journey to the magical Emu Plains. Having grown up in the limelight after spending a decade as the star of one of the most popular blockbuster franchises in history, Daniel Radcliffe could have easily continued to piggyback off the success of Harry Potter for the rest of his days or faded quickly into obscurity, but instead he’s made a conscious effort to branch out, and as a result he’s become one of the most interesting young actors working today.

Exclusive: ITV has commissioned a series of four drama shorts, working titled Unsaid Stories…, which have been inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.
In an anthology format not dissimilar to the Jeff Pope-produced Isolation Stories that ITV aired during the coronavirus lockdown, Greenacre Films — the producer behind Netflix’s Michaela Coel-fronted feature Been So Long — will make the 15-minute episodes to be broadcast next month.

Jerome Bucchan-Nelson, a writer on Sky hit drama Bulletproof, will pen Generational. It explores the relationship between a Black father and his teenage daughter, when William catches Justina sneaking out to attend a Black Lives Matter demonstration. The partnership, announced Tuesday, will see Cinépolis release eight to 10 movies in the second half of 2020 sourced from Particular Crowd, Turner’s new TNT Original production-acquisition house. The alliance kicks off with true-facts-based “Escape From Pretoria,” a pre-apartheid-era jailbreak thriller starring Daniel Radcliffe and Daniel Webber that is co-produced and sold by Arclight Films.
Marc Meyers’ “Human Capital,” a thriller with Liev Schreiber, Peter Sarsgaard and Marisa Tomei that bowed at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, is also included in the deal.

Exclusive: Some international box office markets that are up and running — even if not at full steam — saw increases this weekend while others faced drops given good weather in some spots and an overall lack of new product. However, Disney floated Kristen Stewart-starrer Underwater into Korea for the first time with a No. 1 start at $402K which is one of the better overseas openings for the underperformer that began rolling out globally in January. Disney/Pixar’s Onward also continued to lead Taiwan in its second week.
Local titles in Germany and Czech Republic were still atop the charts and the former continues to see strong drive-in business. Overall, however, there’s evidence that new releases — scant though they may be — are the ones drawing the most attention from moviegoers. (See market snapshots below.)

In an effort to get the public back into cinemas, national film support body the Korean Film Council (Kofic) has begun providing discount coupons.
The coupons provide consumers with a KRW6,000 ($4.89) subsidy when they buy a movie ticket from any of the major cinema chains and many of the independent operators. With tickets averaging KRW10,000 ($8.15) in normal times, that represents a saving of some 60%.
The scheme started Monday and runs for up to three weeks. Kofic say it will provide up to 1.3 million coupons.
Users can obtain coupons from the websites of the three major exhibition chains, Cj-cgv, Lotte Cinema and Megabox at the rate of two per person per week. Some independents will apply the discount to all ticket sales, up to a limit of four per person per week.

What a difference a year — and a pandemic — makes. At this time in 2019, Pokémon Detective Pikachu was the No. 1 movie in 72 markets with a $54M frame at the international box office while John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum took out a took out a $35M hit in 66 and Avengers: Endgame still had stones aplenty. As some overseas markets begin to open with the gradual easing of coronavirus lockdowns, and as we ease back into reporting from overseas turnstiles, it is clearly a vastly different picture that includes social distancing and a lack of concessions in some areas. (See below for breakouts on some of the markets that are back in action.)
Though it’s very slow going out there, some offshore markets are edging back into operations and the past weekend saw business in some of the majors, while some smaller hubs are finding patrons eager and others are just inching back to what’s available.

It’s hard to predict what an actor will do when they wrap up playing an iconic role that has taken up years of their career.
However, for the man who played one of the biggest roles of all time, Daniel Radcliffe, who portrayed Harry Potter on screen for an entire decade, it was a rough exit from the Wizarding World. Speaking to the UK Independent, Radcliffe talked about how he began drinking heavily after his run as The Boy Who Lived came to a close in 2011, explaining that it was his way of dealing with things at the time.
“[My] way of dealing with that [was] just to drink more or get more drunk, so I did a lot of that for a few years. … A lot of drinking that happened towards the end of Potter and for a little bit after it finished, it was panic, a little bit not...

As the growing coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt film and television production across the globe, the South African industry is bracing for the impact of the virus’s spread as the government announced a raft of emergency measures, including a travel ban on foreign nationals from the U.S. and the U.K.
The ban cast a shadow of uncertainty over one of the world’s leading hubs for international film and television shoot, where studio productions, such as Sony Pictures’ Vin Diesel actioner “Bloodshot,” are a major source of work for local crew, contractors and talent.
Privately some South African producers said they’re racing to make sense of the fast-moving situation and bracing for a wave of interruptions to the thriving production services industry. Others, meanwhile, are showing resolve in the face of an unprecedented crisis.

While Ryan Scott of MovieWeb goes on to interview Danield Radcliffe about his starring role in the movie Escape from Pretoria, which was based on the true story of two men that escaped Pretoria Maximum Security Prison decades ago, I’d like to go into a broader spectrum of his career. Harry Potter fans, you all know the big twist at the end of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone, right? It tuns out that the apparently meek Professor Quirrell is not only secretly a disciple of Lord Voldemort’s, but also shares his body with the dark wizard’s spirit, with Voldemort’s face taking up the back of his head. It’s a nightmare-inducing image when you’re a kid, but now that we’re all older, Potterheads have some questions about how this peculiar arrangement worked. For instance, here’s a big one: how did Quirrell sleep without crushing Voldy’s face?
Thankfully, we’ve now got a very logical, smart answer from a very reliable source: the Boy Who Lived himself. Daniel Radcliffe spoke with HuffPost to promote his new movie Escape from Pretoria, which also stars Quirrell actor Ian Hart. The outlet couldn...
