Last year’s Emmys honored Mr. Robot… will this year’s ceremony honor a Mr. Robot Maker?
The race for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series will crown a new champ on Sunday, Sept. 17, since last year’s winner, Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek, didn’t get nominated. And Westworld star Anthony Hopkins has to be a top contender for his mesmerizing work as cerebral theme-park architect Dr. Robert Ford on HBO’s sci-fi hit. (It can’t hurt that Hopkins has already won two Emmys, along with his Oscar for Silence of the Lambs.) But he’ll have...

Ensemble – Drama Series
Nominees:
“The Crown”
“Downton Abbey”
“Game of Thrones”
“Stranger Things”
“Westworld”
Will Win: “Game of Thrones”
Could Win: “Downton Abbey”
Should Win: “The Crown”
“Downton Abbey” has won three of the last four years, including the two most recent competitions. If it wins a fourth, it would tie “E.R.” for the most all-time wins in this category. But we don’t think that’s going to happen. “Game of Thrones,” a five-time nominee, will be battling it out with two newcomers: “The Crown” and “Stranger Things.” While one might think picking the ensemble winner is as simple as totaling up individual winners to find the most popular show, the ensemble winner doesn’t always line up that way. So, considering how loyal these voters are, we’re going with consistency over a fresh pick. But honestly, this one’s a toss-up.

Hold on, we have to wipe the tears from our eyes. Give us a second. […] Ok, I think we can put some words together now. Carrie and Quinn watching the video of his near-death from Sarin gas exposure was…well, it was heartbreaking. Not only do we never need to see that video again — “Homeland’s” insistence on showing it, over and over, is getting to be a bit much — but Quinn’s reaction to it shows just how much damage was inflicted.
After saying he’d never seen the video, he told Carrie he now wanted to see it. She told him what happened, filling in the narrative around the video before and after showing it, and they watched as Quinn convulsed, foamed at the mouth, and pissed himself. But the true pain hit after the video ended, when Carrie explained how she found him. “You saved me?...

Quinn is alive! …and boy is he in trouble. Our immediate elation over Rupert Friend’s return to “Homeland” (following a cliffhanger ending in Season 5 that left his well-being very much in doubt) was slowly reined in over the course of the hour-long premiere. Severely inhibited mentally and physically restricted, Quinn has all but given up at this point in his journey. He’s throwing his money away on prostitutes and drugs, searching for any kind of reprieve from the agony plaguing his mind and body. By episode’s end, Carrie takes pity on his living situation, but it will likely be a long road to back to proper health for the fan favorite.

“The devil’s in the details” is a phrase one would expect to to hear in a con story. Twisty, fun thrillers like these thrive on little moments that may have been overlooked — swiping a wallet after an “accidental” collision, sliding an extra card into the deck to throw the count — but they typically do so by flashing back and highlighting an action that wasn’t seen at first glance. It makes the audience admire how clever and smooth the con artist is, with the surprise benefit of giving the viewers at home a wake-up call.
Such scenes populate “Sneaky Pete,” Amazon’s new original series starring Giovanni Ribisi as the titular con artist, but they aren’t the details that elevate the charming drama above similar fodder. Creators Bryan Cranston (who co-stars as Ribisi’s primary intellectual opponent) and David Shore not only populate the series with expert character...

“The Young Pope” is not what you think. It’s not dripping with self-importance, adherent to the weight many assign its sensitive topic. Nor is Paolo Sorrentino’s serialized debut a monstrous affront to Catholicism, throwing stones at a centuries-old institution from the outside. Even after two hours with “The Young Pope,” the Italian director of “The Great Beauty” and “Youth” holds back the defining visual summation of his show.
But when it hits (early in Episode 3), you’ll know it. And you’ll laugh.
It’s not as though people haven’t been laughing already. Much has been made of HBO’s foreign acquisition in the past week, when the show’s title went viral well before the season premiere. Social media users came out in force with memes, song parodies, and sharp jabs at the stodgy ol’ church, all building a brand around a show not yet released...

Showtime is bracing for the “Twin Peaks” effect.
Network president/CEO David Nevins expects to see a tremendous surge in sign-ups for Showtime’s streaming service come May 21, when “Twin Peaks” premieres, and hopes to capitalize on that interest.
Showtime is expected to see its over-the-top service explode that day, given that episodes 3 and 4 will be available on the service the same day as the show’s two-hour linear premiere. Beyond that, the show will roll out in a traditional weekly fashion.

“More or less it will be once a week,” he said. “We’re not breaking it into two seasons. David really believes in the drip of weekly television.”
He also believes in keeping the show hush-hush – so much that a proper “Twin Peaks” trailer probably won’t be released before premiere. “You’ll see film pieces come out,...

Comic Book Reviews: DC Comics Round Up Week 08-24-2016
Recently I put up an article here on Lrm about getting into Batman for new or casual readers (and to an extent, some of the more regular comic book readers out there). I broke it down to three good jumping on points, of which Tom King’s "Batman: Rebirth #1" was used. Now with some of the "Rebirth" books getting near issue six, I can say almost (Almost, not All!) all of the official "Rebirth" books have been an excellent introduction to the series for new readers. On that front, DC has been hugely successful (and the sales numbers are showing it). While continuity is still a bit funky, and events within titles don’t really seem to match up in a macro sense, each individual series has been a blast to read. While I am still reading Marvel books,...
