While the Marvel Cinematic Universe was busy changing the way Hollywood studios approach their biggest franchises (and all which that implies), The CW and DC were off making TV history with the Arrowverse. Much like the House of Ideas' multimedia superhero property, the Arrowverse was all over the place in terms of its quality and success. Certain killjoys would tell you its flagship series went on for way too long, while others would blame its limited resources and financing for preventing it from truly doing justice to the epic comic book arcs it adapted.
Overall, though, the Arrowverse was a daring experiment in the best way. That's why we're hitting the pause button and reflecting on its legacy before DC Studios head honchos James Gunn and Peter Safran usher in their shiny-new unified vision for all things DC-related.

A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.
January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Stephen Amell has officially wrapped filming Arrow, bringing an end to the Arrowverse’s involvement with the actor with whom it all began.
The man who will now always be linked to the definitive portrayal of Oliver Queen took to social media with a brief but heartfelt declaration to reveal that he had wrapped on the show, saying:
Words can’t even begin to express what Arrow has meant to me. Best 8 years of my life. The cast and crew of the show have become my family. I’m going to miss them. I’m wrapped.
Prior to 2012, Amell was just another jobbing Canadian actor, appearing in guest roles and recurring characters in minor TV shows, with the closest he came to potential stardom being getting down to the final three in auditions to replace Andy Whitfied as Spartacus’ eponymous slave rebel.
Similarly, when Arrow began in 2012, few people expected very much of it,...

CW Seed has released a blood-soaked first look at their upcoming animated series Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons. This is a 12-episode original series that stars Michael Chiklis (The Shield) as Slade Wilson and as you’ll see, it doesn’t hold back on the blood and violence. It looks like it’ll be a wild and entertaining series!
The show comes from Constantine: City of Demons writer J.M. DeMatteis and Niko and the Sword of Light director Sung Jin Ahn. The story for the series sees Slade go up against Hive.
Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons follows in the tradition of CW Seed’s animated series Vixen and Freedom Fighters: The Ray. Ten years ago, Slade Wilson — aka the super-assassin called Deathstroke — made a tragic mistake and his wife and son paid a terrible price. Now, a decade later, Wilson’s family is threatened once again by the murderous Jackal and the terrorists of H.

Nobody gets with the program like Greg Berlanti, the super-producer of television who currently has a record 18 active shows across the dial—the record before Berlanti broke it several times had been 10 shows (a mark reached by both Aaron Spelling and Jerry Bruckheimer), which makes the latest achievement by Berlanti Productions all the more impressive.

Ten years ago at this time, I’d have never thought Deathstroke would be headlining his own animated series. Aside from being a primary antagonist on Teen Titans – and being referred to only as “Slade” – even his inclusion in a video game such as Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe seemed somewhat surprising. Don’t get me wrong, I love the character, but there was a time when even Iron Man was considered obscure to the mainstream.
But since then, key roles in the Arrow TV series and the Batman: Arkham Origins video game certainly helped in boosting the mercenary’s notoriety. There was also the post-credits scene cameo in the Justice League movie, but that seems like a footnote in comparison. On top of that, animated flicks such as Son of Batman and Teen Titans: The Judas Contract assisted in spreading the word.

The CW Seed has been the ancillary stomping grounds for animated versions of DC Comics’ Arrowverse characters, a chance to extend the brand with lesser-known heroes. For their third outing (after Vixen and Constantine), they smartly offered up Freedom Fighters: The Ray for two six-episode seasons, which have been edited together into a feature, on disc today from Warner Home Entertainment.
Although the two seasons arrived in December and July, they act as a prequel story to last fall’s “Crisis on Earth-x” crossover extravaganza. Here, we have the birth of the Freedom Fighters with appearances by not only the Ray but also Black Condor (Jason Mitchell), Phantom Lady (Dilshad Vadsaria), Dollman (Matthew Mercer) and Red Tornado (Iddo Goldberg). According to some behind the scenes shenanigans, the animated story was written first and when the four-parter was written for live-action, things weren’t lining up right, so the keen viewer...

Though many of you reading this no doubt lament NBC’s cancellation of Constantine to this day, you have to admit that its early demise certainly opened up a world of possibilities for the character. Had the plug not been pulled, the charismatic demonologist would’ve never been introduced into the Arrowverse, let alone granted a headlining gig in his own animated web series/movie, that being City of Demons.
Much like its predecessor in Vixen: The Movie, this adventure will air in prime time. In fact, you can expect it to debut on Monday, October 15 in the 9 pm Est slot, immediately following the season premiere of Arrow. What’s more is that we’ll get a sneak peek at Legends of Tomorrow‘s fourth season, which’ll kickoff one week later on October 22. In recent years, not only has it expanded into novels and comic books, but it’s also spilled over into the realm of animation by way of Vixen and Constantine: City of Demons.
Actually, there’s one very important offering sandwiched in between those two, and that’s Freedom Fighters: The Ray. Like its sister productions, it originally aired as a web series on the CW Seed streaming service, but has now been seamlessly cut together as a feature-length movie.
At face value, this appears to be a prequel to last fall’s DC TV crossover event, “Crisis on Earth-x,” which it essentially is, but it’s also so much more. As you may have figured, the central focus is placed on the Ray himself,...

The CW has grand plans for “Batwoman” beyond this coming season. As previously announced, the character will appear in December during the network’s next DC crossover event, which includes “Arrow,” “The Flash,” and “Supergirl.” But “Batwoman” is now also being developed as a separate series.
According to the CW, a casting notice is about to be released for the crossover — but since the network has designs on putting this character at the forefront of a new series, the development process had to be announced earlier than usual. Gotham‘s fifth and final season won’t be with us until 2019, but at least we now know we’ll get a sneak peak at the highly anticipated last run of Fox’s Batman prequel series later this month at San Diego Comic-Con.

In a matter of weeks, about 100,000 or so of the people fortunate enough to have procured passes to San Diego Comic-Con will be able to rub their unique experiences in our faces by saying they were in the room when certain movies were revealed, or when various new trailers were dropped.
When it comes to new footage being revealed, I’m personally looking forward to whatever promos heralding the next season of DC TV will be on hand. Of course, they’ll be online for the rest of us to see moments after being unveiled at the convention itself, so we can at least take comfort in knowing the Arrowverse fans among us have something to chew on – even if we weren’t able to make the trip.

The great thing about the Arrowverse is that with it being so expansive, it hasn’t limited itself to live action television and, in the past few years, it’s also spilled over into the comic book realm as well as animation. When it comes to the latter, much success was found with Vixen, which was first presented as a web series that spanned two seasons before being cut together as one seamless direct-to-video movie.
Having gotten a taste for exploring other characters and possibilities that the TV shows may not have the time or budget for, the producers have since decided to branch out with their latest endeavor, that being Freedom Fighters: The Ray.
Serving as a prelude of sorts to last fall’s epic crossover that was “Crisis on Earth-x,” the home video release presents the animated web series as a feature-length film, much like the aforementioned Vixen.

Those of you who enjoyed the first animated web series to be set within the Arrowverse, Vixen, were probably ecstatic to learn that Greg Berlanti and company had a similar project lined up, that being Freedom Fighters: The Ray. Having been originally announced around the time of San Diego Comic-Con this past summer, we expected to see the Ray lead other heroes into battle against Nazi doppelgangers of DC TV’s heaviest hitters before long. But, as the Crisis on Earth-x crossover concluded, we were left wondering just what was going on with the animated tie-in.

Once again the CW Dctv crossover event is upon us, And with it a trailer. Before we view the trailer let’s get to the meat of all this crossover madness.
So we start out with the fact that the wedding of Iris and Barry is finally here. Happiness, love and some tears are shared all around, but being that this is the DC universe we have to have our curveball thrown in at some point. The curveball that we will get are the denizens Earth X.
Earth X is a place where the Nazis won WWII and lets just say things are bad in this world. The superheroes we know now are part of a group called The New Reichsmen. In the comics this group consisted of Overman (Superman), Brunhilde (Wonder Woman), Leatherwing (Batman), Bltzen (Flash), Martian (Martian Manhunter) & Underwaterman (Aquaman). In under two weeks’ time, the four shows that make up the Arrowverse will unite for their annual crossover event. This year’s outing promises to be the biggest yet, as the gang will have to face off against their Nazi doppelgangers from another Earth. When I say that we’ve come a long way when it comes to superhero costuming in live action, you’ll probably agree with me. Years ago, it seemed like nobody was able to think outside of the spandex box, but today, we’re treated to one sweet looking suit after another. Often given the impression that each costume is both utilitarian and stylish, we now wholeheartedly believe why these characters look the way they do.
Obviously, The CW has been no exception, offering up some incredible costume designs of their own. To date, the Green Arrow has worn something new each year, with seasons 4 and 5 having seen considerable upgrades. Likewise, the Flash is getting similar treatment and, understandably, eyes are turning toward Supergirl.
Admittedly, the current costume worn by Kara Zor-El is fantastic in its own right and has inspired cosplayers since its introduction. Still, it’s undeniable that...
