With its list of new releases for August 2023, Prime Video is relying on a heaping dose of fun library movies.
The first of the month brings a big influx of worthwhile flicks, including Galaxy Quest, Saw, F9: The Fast Saga, and Jurassic Park (the last two via Amazon’s Freevee free streaming option). Then some other recents hits arrive later on like the appropriately titled Cocaine Bear on Aug. 15 and the Chris Pine-starring Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on Aug. 25.
August also sees the arrival of a major Amazon Original movie in the form of Red, White & Royal Blue. Based on a New York Times bestselling book, this LGBTQ romance follows a U.S. president’s son and a British prince. Over on the TV side of things, Prime Video subscribers can check out the Sigourney Weaver project The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart on Aug. 4 and Harlan Coben’s Shelter on Aug.

Eight of the 10 directors in the Morelia Festival’s main Mexican competition are women, led by two of the biggest Mexican fest hits of the year,“Robe of Gems,” Natalia López Gallardo’s Berlin Special Jury laureate, and “Huesera,” from Michelle Garza Cervera, a double Tribeca winner.
Features with Indigenous or Black Mexican protagonists have shot up in Mexico, from 14 in 2019 to 31 in 2019, according to Imcine’s Mexican Cinema Yearbook.
In 2017, Mexico’s biggest homegrown hit was Nicolas López’s “Do It Like an Hombre,” a merciless taunt of a Mexican macho’s helpless homophobia, which grossed 11.0 million in the country.
For centuries an entrenched bastion of machismo, in film terms, the dial is finally moving on diversity.

Mexican-Chilean horror movie “El habitante” (“The Inhabitant”) has closed new major territory deals in the run-up to this year’s Toronto Film Festival.
Kinovista has acquired rights to France and French-speaking Europe, Capelight Pictures to Germany and Austria and Double & Joy Pictures to South Korea and Vietnam.
“El habitante” is directed and written by Guillermo Amoedo, a co-writer on Eli Roth’s “The Green Inferno” and “Knock, Knock.” The film turns on three sisters who break into a corrupt Mexican senator’s home to rob him, liberating his small daughter, chained up in the basement only to discover that she’s possessed.
Closed by Guido Rud’s FilmSharks Intl., the sales add to an already-announced U.S. acquisition deal with Lionsgate’s Pantelion and a sale to Cinema Prestige in Russia, where “The Inhabitant” opened in late August at No. 4 at the Russian box office, Rud said.

Beyond ongoing releases, this is never a significant weekend; most of the specialized action is in Toronto. Outside the festival circuit, however, three-month-old hit “The Big Sick” remains on top. Young J.D. Salinger biopic “Rebel in the Rye” had the most traction among openers, with decent grosses considering its negative reviews.
Opening

$44,280 in 4 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $11,070
Ongoing interest in “The Catcher in the Rye” and J.D. Salinger as well as strong theater placement helped this do good initial business in New York and Los Angeles.
What comes next: Similar appeal should be seen as this expands starting Friday in other big cities.

2017-09-04T09:28:09-07:00Hollywood Has the Worst Labor Day in 20 Years
No new wide releases and a crop of holdovers that haven't generated much excitement. It was a recipe for a slow holiday weekend at the box office, and it turned out to be just that.
Via The Hollywood Reporter.
The Labor Day box office was anything but a picnic, capping a difficult summer that saw revenue and attendance plummet.
Revenue for the four-day holiday weekend will land between $93 million and $96 million, down as much as 26 percent from 2016 and marking the worst Labor Day frame since 1998 or 1996, when revenue topped out at $95.2 million and $90.6 million, respectively, according to comScore. (Final numbers for this year will be tallied Tuesday.)
The culprit? There weren't any new wide releases. At the same time, it could have been much worse. Many thought it would be the slowest Labor Day in 25 years or more,...

The past month or so has been pretty rough at the box office. That’s no secret, and has been widely reported. A few weeks back, we had the worst box office haul since 2001, and this past weekend went on to outdo that title. As it turns out, last weekend was the worst Labor Day weekend since 1999. Ouch.
And it’s no wonder, as there were no wide releases to hit. All we got was a limited rerelease of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and limited releases of Tulip Fever, Do It Like an Hombre, and Marvel’s Inhumans in IMAX.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard made out like a bandit with $10.3 million. It’s nearly doubled its production budget (despite its negative reviews and reception), and this weekend, it only dropped .7 percent from last weekend, reenforcing the fact that there are currently slim pickings in theaters.

How bad was this weekend? While it’s ever-so-slightly better than last week’s abysmal result, it is — by far — the worst for the Labor Day holiday since 1982. You’ve got to go back to 1998 to find a weaker total, but that saw nearly twice as many tickets sold at lower prices.
To some degree, it was self-fulfilling prophecy. There were no new 1,000+ film openings, and no August blockbusters that could sustain grosses. Five of the top 10 are July releases, with “Leap” the only entry to debut in the last two weeks.
The last two weekends have established a new low for moviegoing attendance — something around 8.5 million tickets sold in the U.S. and Canada, out of a combined population of 363 million. About 2.3 percent of the public went to the movies.

Thanks to some stronger-than-expected performances, this weekend ended up better than Mojo's forecast and yet, this is still the worst three-day Labor Day weekend in twelve years. The top twelve grossed a combined $51.5 million and you have to go back to 2000, when the top twelve grossed a combined $47 million, to find a worse performance. That said, both The Hitman's Bodyguard and Annabelle: Creation delivered strong performances to top the weekend. In fact, only four films in the top ten saw any kind of drop compared to last weekend and those drops were minimal with Annabelle's 5% drop being the largest within the top ten. Unfortunately the weekend's new releases didn't make much of a dent with Lionsgate's Hazlo Como Hombre and Weinstein's Tulip Fever failing to crack the top twenty. Lionsgate's The Hitman's Bodyguard finished atop the weekend chart for a third straight weekend in a row with an estimated $10.25 million.

Saturday Am Update: With an estimated $2.4 million, The Hitman's Bodyguard topped Friday's box office on its way to a third straight weekend at #1, looking to deliver nearly $9.5 million for the three-day and nearly $12 million for the four-day holiday. Annabelle: Creation falls into second place with $1.8 million on Friday, heading toward a $6.8 million three-day and the Weinstein's Wind River delivered an estimated $1.5 million on Friday and is looking at a three-day around $5.5-6 million. As for the weekend's new releases, Sony's re-release of Close Encounters of the Third Kind brought in an estimated $485k and is looking at a solid $1.6 million for the three-day, likely to find a spot in the top twelve. The Weinstein's Tulip Fever brought in an estimated $357k and is looking at a three-day around $1.2 million and Lionsgate's Hazlo Como Hombre is falling well short of our forecast after bringing in an estimated $347k on Friday, headed toward a three-day around $1.2 million.

The verdict is still out on whether or not the DC Extended Universe will have a long and healthy life, but Warner Bros. is taking some interesting steps that an positively affect their properties, should it not. Last week, it was revealed that director Todd Phillips and producer Martin Scorsese were in talks to develop an origin story for the Joker.
Unlike any of the DC films that had hit in recent years, the Joker origin film won’t be a part of the Dceu. This will allow the filmmakers not to be restricted by any of the the preexisting canon, and will give them the room to actually tell the story they want to tell. Considering that Warner Bros. had considered themselves a director-focused studio, this is fantastic news, and could lead to more Dark Knight-caliber DC flicks.

No need to sugar coat it, this was a miserable weekend. The combined gross of the top twelve failed to total over $50 million, something that hasn't happened in an August weekend in over 20 years. In fact, the combined $49 million for the top twelve is the worst since the top twelve combined for $43.5 million in late September 2001. Making matters worse, with next weekend seeing no major, new wide releases things aren't going to improve until It arrives on September 8. Keeping things to this weekend, The Hitman's Bodyguard finished in the top spot for a second weekend in a row with an estimated $10 million. That gross, however, appears a bit precarious. It wouldn't be at all surprising to see actuals dip below the double-digit mark. Should that happen this would be the first weekend in two years to not have a film break double digits over the three-day. The last time was...
