Movie could be much better ! Warning: Spoilers
The idea of the movie was good (despite being a copy of the movie "open Water "), the actors are good and the budget spent should not have been Much, but even so the film fails a lot in some scenes. as Part of the film in which one of the characters decided to swim until Find help, since the film takes place on an island and did not go there Nobody makes no sense. The end is terrible, the final scene Does not make sense, one of the characters manages to go back to the Yacht and leaves one of the surviving characters back at sea (which Had boosted to climb) and then suddenly remembers that he has it To go to the sea, but no ladder was lowered into the sea. Possible to return to the yacht, and as soon as the character jumps to the Sea to save the other who had helped her up there is a cut in the scene And it appears soon after the character who had already boarded the yacht Again there on a new day a ship coming towards you to help her.

Imagine using your eyes and actually watch the movie...
conchas-502455 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Not the best movie ever but most definitely the worst like many people are saying here. Before saying the movie is bad because of the ending maybe all of you should use your eyes and watch the end again. Ana climbs on the boat and activates the mechanical ladder by pressing a button on the console and then She goes to her son. And she even screams for guy when she realises she dropped the ladder but he didnt climb on the boat. If she didnt drop the ladder why would she be screming for him like she thought he was on board already? Use your brain morons. As for the people complaining about bickering you clearly arent portuguese and you have no idea how we are and ususally react to things. Yeah, we are loud and we curse a lot and we are proud of it. Deal with it!

I was tempted to give it a single star
Artemis-919 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the movie last night, and was tempted to give it an 8 star: great photography, great acting (mostly in the most difficult setting of a real ocean!) and gripping story (at least for me who'd not seen the German movie this is allegedly a remake).

All characters are easy on the eye, young and athletic, but not one is open enough for me like him or her. They're all friends, or they're supposed to be, to enjoy a week-end of sun and ocean aboard a yacht that belongs to the rich one in the group. The world is theirs - at least for the week-end! The yacht has plenty of beer and wine in the freezer for Daniel's 20th birthday. The sun is great. This ocean, just off Madeira Island, is so blue and warm!

In part to escape bickering with each other, some jump overboard and start swimming. Daniel, the owner, and former lover of Ana (the mother occupied with her one-year baby), attempts to grab her, and they fall overboard. Since his libido obscured his mind, he had forgotten to extend the ladder for people to get on board from the sea... Are they lost? Yes! They're lost because they're alone as a group, and each one is too selfish to act rationally under the dire circumstances. One by one, they die - in different manners, what we're told gently, by images and dialogue.

Without the last minute, the film would be a most enjoyable disaster movie. Many reviewers batter the last scene, but in my view, for the wrong reason. Daniel finally thinks of a way to serve as a ladder to Ana to get aboard. She does, she presses a button and an intermittent red light is seen briefly to her back. Her priority is to hug her baby, her second priority is to wrap herself in a blanket. If that's not weird enough, she disrobes again, and jumps overboard shouting Daniel's name - who's not answering back. She did not throw the ladder down to come back up - because, in my view, she was comfiting suicide like others had done before her, in different manners.

So, until here, the movie is good, and well crafted, though dark as hell. Black as the screen frames that precede the last minute.

Ana in a summer frock is holding her baby on the deck, and waving to a fisherman that appears with the early morning.

A producer or a distributor imposed a Hollywood ending where the whole concept of the movie does not allow for it.

After reading other comments this morning, and decided to balance my rating, to honor the beautiful things (and girls!...) in the movie.

Tedious!
johannes2000-125 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, the premise isn't that bad: a group of six friends make a pleasure cruise on a yacht and when in the middle of the ocean they go for a swim, the last one stupidly jumps in the water without hanging down the ladder first, so they cannot get out off the water since the sides of this big expensive yacht are too high to climb.

The major part of the film we see everyone swimming and floating and treading water around the boat, and endlessly bickering, fulminate, swear and calling each other idiots (and worse). Especially the women are constantly on the brink of hysteria, their screaming and shrieking pretty quick gets heavily on your nerves. Unfortunately there is nothing else to distract the viewer, because strangely enough they left out everything that you would expect in such a situation, like sharks attacking or someone getting tangled in the screw of the yacht (to just name a few fun and exciting possible story-lines). Instead of that, we get some lame and unsuccessful attempts to get on board, and for the rest nothing at all happens, just one by one the exasperated and dead-tired floaters succumb, but for the proverbial last girl standing (or better: swimming!).

Here seems to have occurred some strange fault in the editing: we see her at last succeed in climbing on board, more or less on the shoulders of a drowning friend, then a few minutes later jumping overboard again (without lowering the crucial ladder!) and all of a sudden there's the last shot: she's again on board, waving to a nearing other vessel. The end. Huh?!? How did she get on board again without the ladder?? We'll never know. It's typical for the whole production: illogical, unrealistic, and to be honest: just boring.

There's an hour and a half of your life you will never get back.
kritch-7779723 January 2022
Gave it a single star, it really was THAT bad. The Actors and Actresses were watchable enough, but the plot and direction left so much to be desired. Whilst watching the idiotic film, you just had to realize that the characters had eaten lead paint as kids. Totally dense and illogical and even at the end, the plot was ruined by even more direction stupidity. If a small amount of nudity is all you wanted, use Google. Really, this film is not worth wasting your time on.

Why?!
joaoramos-2472431 October 2019
This is a poor remake of an already unexceptional movie. A remake could make sense if there were significant cultural barriers or if the original was based on such old technologies that people wouldn't watch it anymore (like Metropolis - black and white, silent, old timey effects, etc, but still a story that can be made interesting to the public again if presented in a more modern format).

But they didn't remake 1927's Metropolis, they remade an average 2006 movie (itself already a sequel to a very similar and very average movie) which last aired on Portuguese TV's not that long ago. Not only did they not do a good job, but they resorted to what seems to be the reason behind the choice: getting a couple high profile Portuguese actresses to be semi-naked, which invariably attracts Portuguese viewers. It is a cheap shot in too many ways.

A film with flaws and problems, but which, in Portuguese cinema, has some innovations and originalities worthy of positive mention.
filipemanuelneto4 April 2023
I've seen a lot of movies, but I never want to claim to be an expert on anything. However, from what I've already seen, I realized that Portuguese cinema is much more specialized in comedies and telefilms than in dramatic material. Just think of Portuguese films (even recent productions, leaving aside the great and venerable classics with Vasco Santana and others) and probably most of the titles that will come to mind are comedies.

This film is therefore an outsider in the middle of the party, shall we say! So when I decided to see it I was already curious, but as I watched the film I started to think "where have I seen this before?". To my surprise, this is a remake of another movie I had seen a few years ago, "Open Waters 2". If a dramatic film is something unusual in Portuguese cinema, a remake of a foreign film is something I had never seen before. Director Sérgio Graciano dared, he took a different path from the others, and that is always an effort that deserves to be praised and encouraged, regardless of the result. And I want to make it clear that I leave here, to the director and the production, a special praise for doing something different.

The cast has reasonably well-known actors, who do a very good job, and with a lot of realism. Dânia Neto convinces us more when she pretends to be afraid of water than when she fights with her husband just because. Diogo Amaral also does valuable work here. Lourenço Ortigão and Afonso Pimentel end up with two of the most irritating characters (the smug rich boy and the goofy guy) but manage to get away with the task at hand. Dalila Carmo ended up with a less interesting character, which didn't stop her from doing a good job. Catarina Gouveia, who everything indicated that she would be here just to appear in a bikini or without it (in the "stupid Instagram brunette" style), also has some good scenes. I particularly liked the scene where the actress panics and questions how she could die with people she doesn't even know, far from everyone who is dear to her and who truly know her.

Technically, the film also has several points in its favor that deserve a mention: the cinematography is quite well achieved, with a very effective and intelligent use of light and color (the blue of the sky and sea, obviously, is the dominant color). The Madeira islands, where the film was shot, are magnificent, a piece of Paradise with the Portuguese flag pinned there, and I can't think of a better place for a film like this, although I could list several other places that might be appropriate, because we really have lucky to have a beautiful country that many of us know only the basics. The soundtrack, quite atmospheric, is good and does a smart job.

Now, let's talk about some things that I think could have been better. Although I praise the relative originality of the project, I have to deplore the lack of capacity of the screenwriters and producers to create good and really original stories in Portugal. For some time now, national cinema has lived on remakes (of national films) and increasingly idiotic comedies, without intelligence or elegance. This film was a step in a new and pertinent direction, but it's still a half-hearted step. One of the flaws that deserves criticism is the fact that, more than a remake, it is a copy of "Open Waters 2". Doing a remake is doing again something that has already been done, but that doesn't mean doing it equal, in every detail. I've seen remakes (foreign) where the production took risks and changed elements of the story, gave different endings, removed or added characters... all of this is legitimate, it can be done and adds some novelty flavor to the production. I regret that this was not done here. There is still a problem that I would like to raise... despite the credible way in which the cast worked, I felt several times that the technical team had a lot to improve, mainly in terms of the sound, the work with the sound design. The ambient and the noise of the waves, many times, almost cover up what is said by the actors and there are ways to work the sound in order to prevent that. The editing could also have been better, with better placed cuts and a series of continuity errors that are not admissible and need to be corrected. And last but not least... there's a baby on the boat. Why, during most of the time they are in the water, do those two dads barely talk about it? If I were the father, I would be more worried about him than about me. Just that.

The very worst of the worst
mekid-331837 August 2023
This is by far the worst movie I have ever seen in my life and I have watched thousands.... The actors and actresses are all super annoying and the English voice overs are absolutely dreadful, soooo annoying....they are all in the water and they think about sex and kissing, they are all so stupid it's scary. I would give it a -5 if I could

A very good movie! See for yourself: ignore the bad reviews and watch it
I created an account because I had to write a review. This is a very good movie! The bad reviews derive from not fully understanding the ending in my opinion.

In order to address some issues other users raised, there are SPOILERS from here onwards.

1) Ana climbing aboard and then jumping: some users said Ana was stupid because, after she finally climbed aboard, she first went to check on her baby and only then on Daniel. This is OK! Because, as she climbed aboard, she pressed the button to automatically lower the stairs/platform (and you can even hear a mechanical noise of that thing being lowered down!) and, then, she runs to the baby. So, because the stairs/platform were automatically lowered, she assumed Daniel would enter the boat. Because he didn't, she jumps in the water to search for him. As Ana was previously climbing aboard, you could see Daniel was very weak, so the viewer can assume he died before he was able to use the stairs/platform (he died so she could save herself!). The last scene is Ana dressed on the boat holding the baby, because, after she jumped in the water for that second time to search for Daniel, the viewer can assume she was able to use the stairs/platform she had previously automatically lowered to enter the boat.

2) Atmosphere between "friends": for the users who say the environment between the group of "friends" was tedious and boring: yes, it was, and that was exactly the point. They were not real friends: this was a toxic group of "friends". Margarida didn't know any of them and she was just sleeping with Daniel; she says so herself, that she was afraid of dying there among strangers. Jaime didn't get along with the others, as you can see in the movie. The only "real" friends were the other 4 childhood friends and, even there, there's some animosity, especially as they grow tenser by being in the water for so long. This was brilliantly done by the filming crew.

3) This is not an issue to address, but a note to exemplify just how brilliant the crew was: a) "Hoje é o primeiro dia do resto da tua vida" - this is the sentence Jaime kept repeating to Ana (from a song by Sérgio Godinho) to encourage her. It means "today is the first day of the rest of your life" - that could not hold a deeper meaning, because Ana is the only one that survives (just her and the baby: the first day of the rest of her new life); b) At some point in the middle of the movie, someone tells Ana she really ought to lose her fear of the water and of swimming; well, when she jumps in the water to check on Daniel at the end of the movie, she does it without hesitation, which means... she has lost her fear - a very common psychological response (ignoring or losing one's fears when attempting to save a life); once again, brilliantly done by the crew.

Judging on the cast I was expecting something substantially better
Netbofia1 July 2019
The argument seams forced. Most of the dialogues aren't natural, with rigid language. The beginning of the film starts by setting up the relationships between the characters, but it starts off by demotivating the viewing of the rest of the movie. The movie then progresses going through all the expected cliches. Leaving little to the imagination, in a progression that is as predictable as it gets.

A good movie to study all that shouldn't be done.

If they had stopped bickering with each other....
LaverneandShirleysucks22 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
And worked together from the start when they all had their strength, they all would've got back on the boat. Stupid selfie girl actually fought against using her giant floating dolphin to climb on board because she needed it all to herself! OMG! In the ensuing tussle, they damage the dolphin as it deflates and drifts away. They all should've drowned her themselves after that. It gets worse though....it takes then literally HOURS of bickering with each other for one of them to try tying their clothes together to get back on....at this point though, they're all out of energy and care more about continuing their incessant bickering. There was absolutely no one here to root for. I wanted them all to drown quickly. What I would've tried right at the start was to pull one of the lightweight girls about 12 feet down under the water, have her keep her body straight and rigid. No bending of legs....And gain momentum during the 12 feet back up to the surface and push her up hard from the bottom of her feet and she'd surely boost out of the water like a rocket up the 4 feet to grab the rails. They tried pushing each other up, but didn't think that you need to gain some force and momentum from below without having a solid surface to push off from. But they preferred to bicker and even at one point start having sex in their delirium lol. And that ending....OMG. The guy FINALLY figures to use the knife to get support and have the last girl climb over him....and when she gets on board, instead of immediately lowering the ladder for him....she runs to her baby. I watched incredulous at her complete lack of sense or care for the guy who helped save her. I get she wanted to get to her baby, but his situation was much more immediate than her sleeping baby. I hated her at that point and as an afterthought she does try to save him after seeing her baby was ok....by jumping back OFF the boat without putting the ladder down! WTH?! But somehow she managed to get back on because in the next scene she's fresh as a daisy with her little one in the process of being saved. I liked Open Water 2...but this remake left a lot to be desired.

The first disaster movie where I actually wanted the actors to die
siebejanssen13 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is the first disaster movie where I actually wished the actors would just die. The testosteron is what killed them, not the situation they were in..

Every attempt they did to rescue themselves got lost in bull fights between the macho men or in a hysterical screams and panic between the women. It took them about 6 hours to even come up with the idea to use their bathing clothing as a rope, which failed because they got in a macho fight once again, which caused them to not even take the time to make a strong braid from the pieces of bathing clothing so it would actually hold their weight.

The only reason one got out of the water, was because there weren't any macho's left to disturb the last rescue attempt by the final macho. A fine life lesson though: "Keep calm when you're in a tight spot!"

Garbage
gianmarcoronconi13 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This film is one of those films that fails absolutely none of it. Let's start with the most obvious thing, the acting is bad and almost makes you laugh, all the emotions and sensations that the actors should communicate to you with their acting are rendered very badly and in a very wrong way. Then we have to talk about the problem that generates tension in this stuff that a school play would be better acted, i.e. That they get locked out of the boat in a stupid and highly unrealistic way, then of course everyone dies except the proverbial woman who saves herself at the last minute by doing a stuff that could have been done from the beginning so as to spare the whole world the havoc that this film represents.

No - just no
kosmasp26 October 2020
A remake of a sequel to a movie from over a decade ago ... with the exact same premise. And the exact same nonsense. A boat is not supposed to be build like this, for exact that reason. But if you suspend your disbelief long enough, you probably won't care. But if you've seen Open Water 2: Adrift don't bother watching this (unless in the unlikely case of you wanting to ... no right? Just no!).

Lost they are ... or are they. I have to admit I'm not entirely certain, if the endings match, I just was thinking while watching this: I've seen this before ... exactly like that. So if you don't want to waste your time, do better than me

Good drama; do not trust the bad ratings
guisreis9 September 2021
Quite unfair bad ratings to this film. It is not a masterpiece in the history of cinema, obviously, but few films are. It is a good drama on the sea. Characters are well developed, much more detailed and deep than in 99% of the films from Hollywood with similar approaches. There are moments in which spectator feels lacking air while seeing the characters' drama, what is a remarkable achievement for the director. There is a sequence of continuity errors in the last scenes prior the ending one, and it was bad, but not enough to worsen the rating the film deserves.

Before watching it, I thought it was a remake of a good horror film on the sea, Harpoon, but indeed it is a remake of a drama from Netflix, Open Water 2 - Adrift, which I have not watched. Then, I cannot say if it is a remake as good as, better than, or worse than the original film. However, I do can say that this is a good mainstream drama from Portugal cinema that worth be watched, and its bad ratings should not be trusted. Harsh critics probably derive from prejudice, something very common when the films are spoken in Portuguese and absent in similar movies that are talked in English.

Ha! That ending!
eniodpereira18 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning felt a bit sluggish. Those long shots where barely anything happens are not my cup of tea. The beautiful landscape is a redeeming factor though.

The characters are credible, especially during their troubles in the water. Some reviews criticize the bickering and overall irrationality but often that's what people do when they find themselves in dire circumstances.

Now about that ending. At first I thought WTF is she doing! I had to rewind and think for a bit to get it. I don't think there was an editing or a continuity error. What I think happened is that actually there was no ladder! Lol! Instead that boat (yacht?) has a retractable swimming platform. You can get a glimpse of it at the stern (back) of the boat if you know it's there. Also I have seen a shot of the real boat in Facebook with the platform lowered, just to make sure. So what I think happened is that the girl lowered the platform when she climbed aboard. That's the button she pressed. At first I thought it was some kind of distress beacon, but then the following scenes wouldn't make sense.

She was expecting the guy would be able to climb aboard and when he didn't, she decided to jump back in the water to search for him, and with the platform lowered it wasn't a problem to get back on board. Now, the question is: how did she know how to operate the platform? That looks like a plot hole. I think the idea behind these final scenes was to provide some suspense, but it was poorly executed.

Warning: Spoilers
I accidentally left Tubi on too long after watching REC, and what I saw next was this piece of crap movie.

I typically don't review movies until I finish watching them, but I refuse to continue wasting my time on this. Newsflash: there are no sharks or any sort of danger in the water. It's just God knows how many people in the water flailing about and yelling (shrieking, really). Who approved this movie?

I don't mind watching trashy movies but this is just tedious and idiotic. I'd rather sit in silence than finish the last 35 minutes of this. And by looking at the reviews, it sounds like the ending is the worst part.

No thanks, I'm out.

An excellent Portuguese movie
mjanssens2625 July 2021
Just because this film is a remake, doesn't mean it should be judged harshly. Forget the original movie exists and what you have here is a gorgeous looking Portuguese film with a great looking cast. Scary and unsettling at times with the predicament the characters find themselves in. My only criticism is the film could've been cut by about ten minutes or so. Other than that, this is a great thriller. In Portuguese with English subtitles and streaming on Tubi as of July 2021.

The movie is good and with a lot of suspense, but the end was sad and has a detail that is not explained, how the only survival get back to the boat after she jump again for the second time, to the water without any precautions to being able to climb back again and leave the baby alone again then she appears dressed up and survive with the baby.
