This April sees Zendaya cross a milestone it honestly feels like she should have reached ages ago: a legitamite leading role in a theatrical film. The actor has been one of the biggest stars of Generation Z and a much hyped starlet for years now, and yet a quick glance at her Wikipedia page reveals a shockingly short resume.
The Oakland born star’s adult film career, after a childhood in the Disney Channel machine leading sitcoms like “Shake It Up” and “Kc Undercover,” really only started in 2017, with a brief supporting turn in Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Opposite her eventual real-life boyfriend Tom Holland, she only had a scant 10 minutes or so of screentime as the sarcastic teen Mj — hardly a star is born moment, despite what the advertising for the film would have you expect.
Zendaya would reprise her role in future Spider-Man films, and her screentime increased with each installment.

When you're a long-running network TV series with 20-plus hours of material to deliver every season, you're inevitably going to take some wild swings to meet your quota. "Bones" was as formulaic as any other television procedural, but it had a good deal more personality and would find ways to spice things up now and then. Sometimes that meant a break in format, like when it showed an entire episode from the perspective of a victim's skull. Other times, that meant inviting further "X-Files" comparisons by forcing its investigating heroes to uncover the truth behind what appears to be an extraordinary crime.
In season 6, episode 19, "The Truth in the Myth," the power couple of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) are tasked with looking into the death of Lee Coleman (Leigh McCloskey), a myth-buster -- not that kind -- who hosted...

Warner Animation Group, the Warner Bros. animation unit responsible for feature-length animation, is getting some new leadership. Bill Damaschke, an animation veteran who started his career as a production assistant on Disney’s “Pocahontas” and eventually became COO of DreamWorks Animation, is in final negotiations to become head of Warner Animation Group, TheWrap has confirmed.
Executive VP Allison Abbate was the last person to lead the unit; she departed in summer 2022 after the merger with Discovery. The fallout of the new leadership included the cancellation of the mostly finished “Scoob: Haunted Holiday,” a follow-up to the 2020 animated feature “Scoob,” as a cost-cutting measure (done at the same time as the shelving of “Batgirl”).
At Warner Bros. Discovery, Damaschke will report to Warner Bros Film Group co-chairpersons and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. It hasn’t been announced what Damaschke’s title will be.

The hand-drawn animated feature Ember from Klaus filmmaker Sergio Pablos is not moving forward at Netflix, Deadline can confirm.
We hear that the decision had to do with creative rather than financials, and is the sort that is par for the course in animation, where projects come together over a longer timeline. Pablos will now be afforded the opportunity to shop the project elsewhere.
First announced by Netflix back in June, Ember is billed as an epic adventure tale of humankind’s quest for fire told through the eyes of young Dikika, who embarks on an impossible race to a distant volcano to retrieve the precious spark that will save her tribe. The project came to the streamer via Pablos’ company, The Spa Studios, and is one of several animated works to be scrapped at Netflix this year — joining a list that also includes titles like Wings of Fire, Antiracist...

Netflix is not moving forward with “Ember,” a hand-drawn animated film from director Sergio Pablos.
It’s the latest animated title at the streamer to get the axe, following executive producer Ava DuVernay’s “Wings of Fire,” the toddler-friendly “Antiracist Baby” and “With Kind Regards From Kindergarten” earlier this year.
With “Ember,” as well as the previously scrapped animated projects, sources at Netflix say the decision is creatively driven, not cost-related. Animated TV shows and movies take longer to make compared to live-action, and it’s not uncommon to send projects back into development or part ways entirely over the lengthy timeline.
Pablos retains rights to “Ember” and will be able to shop the film elsewhere. An animation veteran, Pablos started the company Spa Studios and developed the concepts for cartoon hits like “Despicable Me” and “Smallfoot.” He wrote and directed the Christmas-themed “Klaus,” which was Netflix’s first original animated feature film.

Signature Scores U.K. Distribution For ‘The True Don Quixote’ From Mise En Scene Company (Exclusive)
A new version of the Don Quixote yarn will be tilting at U.K. box office windmills soon.
London-based international sales outfit The Mise En Scène Company (Msc) has secured a U.K. distribution deal with Signature Entertainment for “The True Don Quixote.”
The film is a modern adaptation of the classic Cervantes novel from 1605 but set in the wilds of Louisiana, where Quixote dons makeshift armour and trades his half-starved horse Rocinante for a rusty old Vespa.
Tim Blake Nelson (“The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs”) plays Quixote, and the cast also includes Jacob Batalon (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) as his sidekick Sancho Panza, as well as Brandon Stacy (“The Big Short”) and Ann Mahoney (“The Walking Dead”).
The film is the directorial debut of Chris Poché, whose writing credits include “Kung Fu Panda,” “Charlotte’s Web” and “Smallfoot.”
The deal was negotiated between Msc’s Paul Yates and Signature’s acquisitions and development executive Katie Wilkinson.

Are you one of those people who sees all of the hoopla surrounding HBO content but never gets to play along?
Has adding another pay-tv option to your already overburdened entertainment fiscal responsibilities left you in the dark when it comes to HBO?
Have you unwisely chosen to spend your money on less critically acclaimed and lower quality content to get more bang for your buck?
Well, we have good news for you.
HBO knows you're a captive audience, and they're betting that once you get a taste of their popular and lauded entertainment that you might want to make it a more permanent thing.
Of course, that's my assessment, and I'd recommend HBO in a heartbeat. I have, and I will continue slathering praise on the network that has provided some of my all-time favorite content.
And now, you (that's You who don't have HBO), too, can find out...

In 2004, Sergio Pablo founded The Spa Studios—a boutique animation studio in Madrid—with the goal of transforming the service operation into a production facility, all its own. “We’ve developed some properties that got acquired and produced elsewhere, like Despicable Me or Smallfoot,” Pablos tells Deadline, “but the goal was always to try and make a film ourselves.” 15 years later, the studio’s CEO achieved this goal with Klaus, the first original animated feature to be distributed by Netflix.
Marking Pablos’ directorial debut, the Christmas comedy centers on Jesper (Jason Schwartzman), a postman shipped out to a frozen island above the Arctic Circle, after earning a reputation as the postal academy’s worst student. While in Smeerensburg—a town possessed of two bizarre, feuding clans—Jesper discovers and aims to befriend Klaus (J.K. Simmons), a mysterious carpenter who lives in solitude, crafting toys by hand in his cabin.

Back in 2010, Sergio Pablos couldn’t help but take note of all the origin stories that were being made into movies. “Even Hannibal Lecter and Jason were getting origin stories,” he tells us in our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above). This led him to think about telling an animated origin story of some historical or literary figure. When he first thought of the idea of doing one on Santa Claus, he quickly tossed it aside believing it was too corny but he kept coming back to the idea. The cementing was when he settled on how to frame the story. “Usually stories come together for me when I find the irony which was, what if everything that’s good about Santa came through the actions of the worst human being I can conceive of?”

Netflix is continuing its efforts to expand its mark at the Oscars. This year will include an attempt to make it into the race for Best Animated Feature with the Christmas movie “Klaus.” The film marks the directorial debut of Sergio Pablos, who had previously developed the story for “Despicable Me” and the source material for “Smallfoot.” It also features an original song, “Invisible,” written by Justin Tranter.
In the film, Jesper (Jason Schwartzman) is an entitled brat at a postal academy that’s headed by his father. Channing Tatum is reteaming with the writer and producing team behind his breakout movie “Dear John” for Paramount Pictures’ “Soundtrack of Silence.”
Tatum will star in the film, as well as produce alongside Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan for their Free Association. Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, Isaac Klausner and John Fischer will also serve as producers.
Based on the true story from KQED, “Soundtrack of Silence” chronicles Matt and Nora Hay’s journey to preserve love in a world without sound, and how some of the greatest songs of all time helped them do it. When Hay learned as a sophomore in college that he would soon go deaf, he memorized his favorite songs in order to preserve his most important memories, including how he fell in love with his girlfriend and future wife, Nora.
Jamie Linden penned the script, and the studio will now seek a director for the project.

Having previously co-produced Kung Fu Panda 3 with Pearl Studio, DreamWorks Animation now brings us the Chinese animation house's first original film, Abominable, which is a perfectly lovely movie whose title doesn't suit it at all. From writer-director Jill Culton, the film offers up a lively and colourful road trip across China with three youngsters and the baby yeti they've taken into their care.
When the film begins, teenage Yi (Chloe Bennet) is getting over her father's untimely death by throwing herself into the gig economy and escaping to the rooftop of her apartment building by night. It's there that she finds a big white fluffy creature hiding from a private scientific organization's roving helicopters and staring wistfully at a nearby “Visit Everest” billboard.

Last year, that offering was Warner Bros.’ “Smallfoot,” which opened to $23 million and went on to gross $83 million domestic and $214 million worldwide. “Abominable” has the word of mouth needed to post similar numbers — 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A on CinemaScore — but will face competition for family audiences down the line with “The Addams Family” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” which open Oct. 10 and Oct. 17 respectively.

Sunday Am Final: w/chart After a $9M Saturday that was up 58% over Friday, Dreamworks Animation/Pearl Studios’ Abominable is looking at a $20.85M opening and $30M worldwide. As we mentioned before that’s the 7th No. 1 opening for Universal, 8 if you count last weekend’s Downton Abbey, and it’s the most No. 1s for any major studio this year to date, more than Disney. Abominable also reps the the 22nd No. 1 opening for Dwa as they celebrate their 25th anniversary next month.
“Dreamworks Animation is known for creating quality family entertainment with global appeal and Abominable is a perfect addition to their impressive library. Yi, voiced by Chloe Bennet, is a standout as the newest beloved character in the Dreamworks’ family, adding to their long list of unapologetic, courageous heroines,” exclaimed Universal domestic distribution chief Jim Orr this morning.

After a week that saw the success of three wide-release openings with “Downton Abbey,” “Ad Astra,” and “Rambo: Last Blood,” we are back to one this week with “Abominable” from DreamWorks Animation. The isolation is the industry’s nod to “Joker,” which opens October 4 and is expected to dominate the month. It’s also a matter of happenstance: Once upon a time, “The Hunt” was expected to open September 27.
A late-September date isn’t unusual for animated features. Sony launched its “Hotel Transylvania” franchise similarly, in anticipation of Halloween. Last year, Warners launched “Smallfoot” to $23 million. And there hasn’t been a major cartoon feature since “The Lion King” more than two months ago.
However, those considerations aren’t the main drivers. This Himalaya-set, Chinese coproduction opening in the Middle Kingdom on a prime period there and the $75 million film is expected to find much of its bounty there.

The first animated film of the fall season, and the first in over a month, arrives this weekend in the form of Universal, DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio's Abominable and it's looking to top the weekend box office. Behind it is last weekend's strong opener Downton Abbey, while Roadside Attractions looks to crack the top ten with their moderate release of Judy starring Renee Zellweger. DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio's Abominable serves as the first animated feature since the release of The Angry Birds Movie 2 back in mid-August and it's opening in a hefty, 4,242 locations. Heading into the weekend, the studio is anticipating an opening anywhere from $17-20 million and that lines up with what we've been looking at as the film enters the weekend with very little heat behind it. A look at IMDb page view data shows the $75 million animated feature pacing behind previous animated September openers...

We have a beautiful trailer for you today for the upcoming Universal DreamWorks movie, Abominable. Before I watched the trailer, I wondered why they were making another animated movie about a yeti, since we just had Smallfoot last year. Then I watched the trailer. This looks like such a beautiful film! The story has a lot of heart, and it looks like a totally different movie that involves magic and fantasy. I’m really excited about this one and I know my kids will be too.

Hollywood works in cycles, which means there is indeed a third animated yeti movie coming to theaters in the span of a year. But Dreamworks’ Abominable looks like it deserves much, much more than to be fodder for a meme. On the heels of Warner Animation’s Smallfoot and Laika’s Missing Link comes Abominable, an animated film about a girl in […]
