Lifetime has added two movies to its upcoming “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime” holiday slate, including the Rita Moreno-starring “Santa Bootcamp,” directed by Melissa Joan Hart, and Sarah Drew’s “Reindeer Games Homecoming,” which she will write, star in and executive produce.
Moreno will be joined by Tony Award winner Marissa Jaret Winokur (“Hairspray”), Emily Kinney (“The Walking Dead”) and Justin Gaston in the holiday tentpole movie. Rounding out the cast are deaf actors Deanne Bray and Zyra Singleton. The film will mark a holiday reunion for Hart and Winokur, who previously costarred in the network’s 2018 film “A Very Nutty Christmas.” “Santa Bootcamp” will be Hart’s fourth directorial feature for the network, alongside “The Santa Con,” “Feliz NaviDAD” and “The Watcher in the Woods.”

For a director mostly known for gory cannibal/torture flicks like Hostel and The Green Inferno, Eli Roth has gone on to helm one of his finest features yet with an Amblin family fantasy! But before horror hounds run for the hills screaming “sell-out!”, The House with a Clock in Its Walls is far from the plastic PG fright-laden picture some might imagine, given the oddly Christmassy “Harry Potter for horror fans” posters. Based on a book by John Bellairs, Roth and screenwriter Eric Kripke’s gaudy haunted film fun-house is bursting with a firework display of vibrant concepts, riveting fantasy dread, necromancy, ghouls and squirmy purple tentacles. All a young horror fan could hope for and far creepier than the demon nuns and slender men of recent “grown-up” genre hiccups.

John Bellairs’ 1973 novel “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” was the first of the author’s six Ya books to be illustrated by the late Edward Gorey, whose pen-and-ink drawings were sinister and delightful in equal measure; they invited children to embrace the darkness of growing up without surrendering the sense of wonder that kept them young. Universal’s soulless 2018 film adaptation of the same name, on the other hand, is directed by “Hostel” auteur Eli Roth, whose cartoonish approach makes this bittersweet saga of witchcraft and wizardry feel like nothing more than a well-furnished theme park attraction. Still, it’s sure to be a veritable nightmare factory for kids of a certain age, and there can only be so much shade to throw at a movie in which Cate Blanchett head-butts a demonically possessed pumpkin in order to help save the world from Kyle MacLachlan’s rotting corpse.

The Watcher in the Woods was originally a novel written by Florence Randall in 1976 that was later adapted into a movie that was produced by Disney Studios. While the 1980 movie is a cult classic it is remembered by most as being an epic studio disaster with multiple delays, reshoots, and being pulled from theaters after the ending had a negative response from moviegoers. Although the original movie is considered a disaster by economic and studio standards it has maintained a cult audience and the story continues to be a family favorite around Halloween.
