What happened here?
alfiefamily1 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"In My Room" is an interesting, yet confusing post-apocalyptic film( I suppose) that ultimately left me with too many questions.

I don't want to go too much into the details of the movie, because I don't think I can describe it without revealing too much. But it involves a sense of being alone, and the freedom that can come from that. I believe that it may also deal with second chances and starting over. It also is about our relationships with others.

Nothing is explained here. Why people disappear, why the movie changes from German to English, why is someone so inept in one area but somehow gains a great deal of knowledge in other areas. There is a relationship between man and woman that in the end makes no sense.

For me, the best part of the movie was found in the silence of individual scenes. Again, I don't fully understand what the film was about, and neither did anyone that I spoke to about it, after the screening.

I think therefore I am.

Warning: Spoilers
"What if" is the big question these kinds of stories should be asking? Ever since "Omega Man" (aka "I am Legend") the notion of being alone on the planet is an existential question. However, in storytelling, when it comes down to it, the person is never really alone, there's always an external threat or some other contrivance to make the story more interesting. This movie is no different.

The man's emotional state seems somewhat convincing and the female's actions are purely narcissistic. Why did she need to be there? All it tells me is there are hundreds of thousands of other people who are also "alone" on the planet. It spoiled the idea of being alone, finding yourself without others, no one to help you, physically or emotionally.

I didn't learn anything about surviving in an empty world of plenty, I saw a retreat from "society" and a failed romance. This film wanted to be one thing too many and it leaves you confused and disappointed. Maybe that's the point of this film, it describes fear and guilt.

A simple, yet pointlessly depressing, tale
Nethlem14 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Man lives in society. Society vanishes. Man meets woman. Woman vanishes. Man forever alone

The end.

This is one of these movies where the "apocalyptic setting" and "sci-fi" tags are extremely misleading, don't expect anything like that. This story could just as well have been told without all of humanity vanishing, that way it would at least have been way more believable and only 1/10th as depressing.

Answers? Explanations? Not in this movie, it's all just an exercise in patience, that ultimately doesn't pay off. Teasing the viewer without ever actually following up with any answers, instead there's a bit of cheap and heavy shock value trough killing off a character we've never actually met, a total of two dogs and a goat kid.

I guess for all those people that love their movies slow, depressing and without any conclusion, this will be a great piece of "German cinema". For many others it will just be a pointless drag.

A pretty boring room
Horst_In_Translation23 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"In My Room" is a new German 2018 film that runs for 2 hours exactly pretty much and shows us the post-apocalyptic scenario of one one man living alone (most of the time) on the planet, or at least his area, and he has no clue what happened and where eveybody has gone. This is not a film about survival really or about scince fiction or anything, but really more of a character study when it comes to how the man perceives life and those around around him, not just people, animals too, when there is hardly nobody leftg compared to when there is still everybody there. Writer and director is Ulrich Köhler and it's been quite a while since his last movie before this one here that is I believe his fourth full feature film. Cast does not include any big names. I was pleased to see Wittenborn as he has good presence as always and the lead actor is Hans Löw who you may have come across on "Toni Erdmann" already. He's decent overall I'd say, not bad, but perhaps also slightly underwhelming compared to what could have been given how much screen time he has and how all the focus is on him pretty much from startg to finish. Admittedly the script is not doing him too many favors I must say. It's more about bleakness than about bait, which is fine as well, but then the movie has to deliver in other areas and somehow it really doesn't. The animal scenes were interesting, the dog early on had me glued to the screen and same about everything linked to the goat afterwards. The death of the little goatg shows that there is really no hope for survival and new generations. extinction seems omnipresent and inevitable. This goes well with the comments of the female protagonist and yes there I said it: There is a bit of an Eve in this scenario we have here. Her presence and scenes made the film much better I think, not just because she is pretty stunning physically. There is real convlict at times, real tension and the man's behavior towards her and towards losing her felt very real and authentic. Nonetheless, despite their interesting interaction, this did not save the film by any means. I felt the introduction in the then still civilized world was way too long. Then we witness him witness the loss of mankind and this also felt too long. Good moments there like with the motobikes lying on the street are a rarity. And finally, the film ending when she leaves him and his place and their togetherness was not a great moment for an ending too, even if it again depicts the hopelessness related to future (generations). The problem is not that it is a somewhat unhappy ending, the problem is rather that it is an ending that brought very little to the table in my opinion and felt fairly random. So I must say these almost 10 years since Köhler's previous project are not worth the wait looking at the quality here. The film should have been more poignant and at leastg 15, probably 20-25 minutes shorter with better focus. If you want to see a better film on a similar subject, go for Martina Gedeck's amazing "Die Wand" from a few years ago. That one offers all that's missing here. I give "In my Room" a thumbs-down. Don't watch.

I really wonder who invested money on this movie

Warning: Spoilers
Movie has a good start but after everyone is lost the main character changes a lot for no reason. Back in his life he cannot even open his apartment room but after he manages to set up an electricity system. So he became very handy guy! A lot of similar stuff like this which makes no sense.

It is just a waste of time. I am sorry.

Why?

Warning: Spoilers
What's the point of this movie? There's no plot whatsoever, just a boring middle-aged man, alone, and when he finally meets another human, he never asks pertinent questions about the reasons for this outcome he's in. I'm even more appalled to know that this movie received awards, FOR WHAT?Maybe for being the most boring movie EVER.

Premise had potential
kent-963136 October 2022
Good idea for a film and in a better director's hands it could have amounted to something. Instead get a half mediocre survivialist film and have Rom Com/dystopia. Existential and psychological issues were not adequetly explored. Mis-steps in nature questioning nature and survival technique were ham handed and too many things done to prepare for living were shallow and wrong. This distracted the flow of the film and thought. The lead actor was not bad. The motivation for why the woman felt the need to leave and try to "fend" for herself is not developed. If the mood had been closer to The Road or if a Russian had made this it could have been an interesting film. Wayyy too first world.

Nothing to Spoil
westsideschl24 October 2020
Nothing happens in this German ??. Overview: Somehow, and ridiculously not explained, everyone disappears (like totally vanished) except our central male character &, you guessed it, someone else shows up. Dumb! Sequence of events: Start w/our camera view jumping all over the place; dark disco w/flashing lights; cig. smoking; walking bicycle; driving car; aged dying grandma; more cig. smoking w/breakfast; more driving; abandoned vehicles on roads; more driving; more walking; starts farming (why w/abandoned stores?); unlikely other (with all the right physical attributes) shows up at his desolate farm; the end. If there's some underlying message about, who knows, humanity it got buried in the presentation.

Warning: Spoilers
For the first 30 min, i thought waw this movie is boring but i'm gonna wait till the big change.

Then the big change happened with no explnation and all people disappered exipt him and a stranger and surbrisngly the stranger was a girl indeed cause the whole world revolves arond him and his presios eggblant.

This movie was so boring i needed to bring a note and paincel to fill my time couse other wise i would kill my self.

In theury the idea is good and peacful and could actully be fine if it was by choies but in his case and in him personly in the story and the girl it was a nightmere.

I liked the goat though and the horse was great looking too.

The most absurd movie imaginable.
alimnamazov28 August 2023
This movie is incredibly dumb. Absolutely everything revolves around this movie's story. Can you please tell me who directed it? All they seem fit for is playing with toys. This movie is just ridiculous. If I had the option, I wouldn't rate it even 1 star. So imagine if you were the only one left in the world, what would you do? Would you explore the city to see what's happening or try to find other survivors? Instead of doing that, he chooses to spend his valuable time with a horseman. Please avoid watching this movie, it is simply garbage. If you have any common sense, you'd see that humans can't behave so ridiculously. Absolutely nonsensical, no chance.

Boring copy cat
karlfee-3971429 June 2022
Someone took the two 'everybody-vanished-movies' (is this actually a genre?) "The Wall" (quite atmospheric) and "Silent Earth" (very atmospheric, philosophic and thrilling) laid them on top of each other et voilá made a very boring movie out of it. Compared to the original ones this one is a total waste of time.

Nice until the time shift

Warning: Spoilers
I don't mind slow, I don't mind silent, I don't mind sad losers if they have redeeming qualities, as he has with his grandma.

Everybody's gone, he slowly gets it, but when he gets to a tunnel through the Alps that is clogged he stays there; switch to the future, who knows how much later.

A) There is more than one tunnel through the Alps. Apparently the big vanishing happened during the night, so not that much traffic / cars etc. Blocking the roads. There are road passes over the mountains as well. Just sayin'. The Mediterranean is reachable!

B) Farming. For real? He lets one dog free with tragic consequences, two horses in the tunnel that just trot off, but now he has 1 cold blood horse, chickens, 1 goat. All held captive for some inexplicable reason. Dominion, I guess. Supermarkets have cans galore, pasta never goes bad, neither does rice, etc etc etc, trees give fresh fruit... whatever. His thing is being master of the only living creatures left. He has NO dog, although there must be plenty around that weren't locked in. An own dog would have saved the little lamb from the other dog, eh?

C) What is that where he lives??? There's villas galore on offer, cabins too if you want nature. Farms with plenty of animals (most of which starved without humans to feed them or set them free...). Okay, you want to build your own house, I get it, but again, why keep animals, and if, why not at least in pairs or groups??!! This is supposed to be a regression into old farmsteading? Extremely unrealistic. With electricity and flowing water at least! Silly, and stupid.

D) He's so sufficient but cannot treat his dogbite, or whatever that's supposed to be. Where there's an Aldi there's a pharmacy somewhere! Just sayin'.

E) The young sexy woman, wherever she came from. Oh my. His nurse, and chicken soup cook. Cause you need to kill an animal to treat a cold. No talking, no questions. At least she has a camper, that's cool, and smart. No more dog, cause apparently he is on a mission to kill all dogs left.

That is where I stopped watching. I don't want to know what happens. I am already bored and annoyed enough.

Until the silly and unnecessary farmsteading it was a good indie film.
