The "Mother" robot was created by special effects company the Weta Workshop.
The plot elements are from the epilogue of A. M. Esmonde's novel 'The Final Version' (2014), an extinction event, an automated bunker. A robot practicing being a good parent, complex moral and ethical lessons, A.I. malfunction. Surface contamination lies. Daughter becomes curious about the outside world to name a few.
