Lots of good acts performed at the annual Royal Variety Performance this year. There was magic, some half decent comedians and the whose who of the West End world did their turn. It was all very nice, and despite the pesky adverts that the show being on ITV brings it was an enjoyable enough evening.
Apart from one very annoying thing. Now I know the host of the Royal Variety doesn't have to do very much, just link the show together, but sometimes they can do too much and spoil the whole thing. Step forward then David Walliams, who managed to do just that.
He's a gifted comedian, a good children's author, but some of the things he was getting away with were just poor. Endless camp jokes, endless digs at Simon Cowell, and the less said about his bit during 'The Girls' number the better.
Good show. Bad host.
