Fine if still problematic effort
kannibalcorpsegrinder15 January 2017
Taking a trip into the wilderness, a class of biology students investigating the rising local pollution levels finds their journey interrupted by a discovery that a legendary creature has been stalking them looking for a potential mate and must find a way of getting out of the swamp alive.

For the most part, this one here wasn't too bad but did have some problems. One of the main problems here with the film is the rather campy, low-budget feel and tone present that runs continually throughout this one which is quite frequently throughout here. The most obvious part of that is the actual effects work for the different elements including the CGI gunfire as well as the quick random insert shots of vehicles getting attacked out in the jungle as the creature comes after them through several rather shoddy effects. Even the monster itself falls victim to that being a rather cruddy costume that looks unbelievably cheap in the same sense of wearing a shag-carpet style fur that constitutes the creatures' costume that looks really terrible even before showcasing the big prosthetic attached to the creature that showcases the urge to mate. It's comical and makes for an altogether disappointing and completely lame main monster that's supposed to be scary and chilling. While it looks rather nice when compared to the overall atmosphere and tone of the film, it still sticks out and doesn't really give the kind of impressionable factor that it really deserves. As well, the fact that the film takes so long to get going, with the first half-hour barely having any kind of action with the beast manages to really make for a stumbling first half as this one never really has the time to waste here being just under an hour so to waste that kind of time not doing anything, and to have it be the kind of insipid joking around and goofing on each other just gives this quite a hard time to get through. Though these do tend to hold it back highly, the fact that there's still some rather nice parts here as once the creature appears this one gets some nice action scenes going where the perfunctory smell comes into play to set up some rather thrilling chases in the swamps. The big battle at the campsite where the creature appears in the trap and forces them to take off into the surrounding areas makes for a rather nice time here, and it's big chase to get away makes for a thrilling finale. With some decent gore and a mildly appreciable sense of cheese, it's not entirely terrible but can't really overcome the flaws.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Brief Nudity and Language.

It's difficult to say what the worse part of this film is
whidbeydanielg24 February 2017
The acting? Laughable. The dialogue? Unbelievable The monster? Now I know what happened to that old carpet that I threw out onto the curb last year.

In the ratings there are a lot of 10's, fully 30% of them. Then the rest of the ratings seem to hover toward the bottom. Clearly what happened is that they got their friends to rate it highly.

We wanted a throw away movie for tonight, so thought we'd try it. It was one hour long, which tells you all you need to know.

Where to start (I mean after stealing my old carpet)? A bunch of college students go collecting something in the Everglades. They have no idea what they are doing, but one of them fills a stopper with water. The professor does nothing but berate them. We don't even know what he is a professor of.

The monster seems to prefer women who are having their periods, so there are a number of period "jokes." One of the actors, also the director and writer, runs around most of the movie showing off his buff physique in his whitey tighties, the resident Native American (who they call "chief" believe it or not) is so clearly from India or somewhere and not Native American, the gun is a toy, the black woman is supposed to be funny because she eats everything that doesn't move fast enough, and then they start disappearing (but not quickly enough).

It isn't even good in a campy-bad way. It's just bad in every way.

I hope these folks have day jobs.

Trashy, campy, gross, funny and cheap.
MonsterVision9931 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Swamp Ape" it's one of those micro budget cheap z-movies made independently by amateur filmmakers, its only ambition is to entertain and get a few laughs out of hardcore Z-movie fans, and it succeeds at that, its quite a campy, trashy and disgusting movie, and its well aware of that.

The acting its awful, the effects are horrible, the writing its dumb, its quite cheap and violent, but it manages to be "so bad, its good", it plays with its campiness and its cheapness. When it comes to gore, it delivers, its what you would expect from an ultra low budget exploitation film.

I would recommend it for those who look for an awful trashy movie to laugh at, its quite entertaining at that, but its still awful in every sense.

The worst movie I ever seen
codycho-170877 November 2019
What I like about the movie: -the movie finally ends at some point What I don't like about the movie: -looking it was shot on a camcorder from the early 2000s
  • Non existent sound editing
  • Cheap special effects
  • Awful acting all around
  • Unlikable characters
  • Piss poor dialogue
  • The swamp ape looking like a gorilla suit with grass glued all over it
  • Crap score
  • The swamp apes giant red rocket

Standard shot-on-video schlock
Leofwine_draca8 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
SWAMP APE is another shot-on-video trash horror film about a group of people in the woods running into trouble. I had no idea it was made this year as it looks like something that came out in the late 1990s. The tale sees a group of obnoxious teenagers menaced by a Bigfoot-style creature lurking out in the woods with menace in mind.

It's a trashy, worthless affair, pretty much as bad as it gets. The creature is nothing more than a big guy in an ape mask wearing what looks like a brown shaggy carpet. There's a voyeuristic element to scenes of the girls parading around in bikinis and getting menaced but mostly this is just lousy, with terrible acting and no characterisation. The gore is also inept and hardly worth tuning in for.

So bad you would think it was done on purpose.
againyes28 April 2020
All parts of the movie are bad. The acting is terrible, but you would assume a cheap movie couldn't afford the best actors.Characters are just stereotypes written from the view of a fourteen year old boy. Fat girl is always eating, or talking about food, the guys are just trying to get laid, the girls are there for to be stared at the plot is somehow worse than a mountain monsters episode. The jokes are no, just no. For those who say this is a B-movie, it's not. The room has quotable lines and such randomness that it's funny because of how dumb it is. This is just all things dumb with a movie. Pass on this even if you are curious on how bad it is. If it had some funny lines or interesting story it could make for a random watch while stoned. I could bet that anyone reading this could come up with a better movie with their friends and some iphones.

An Instant Classic..

There has never been a film so engaging, entertaining and truly defining of pure cinema. I recommend to any film lover, especially of the horror genre. The graphic violence and sex was difficult to watch but did feel tasteful.

I will be awaiting this directors next vision.

"Hey, Everyone! I Made Cupcakes! Who Wants One?!"...
azathothpwiggins1 November 2020
With a title like SWAMP APE, how could one NOT be entertained? Well, like this.

A group of college students accompany their professor into the Everglades. Along the way, they visit a souvenir shop in order to spout some of the most brain-deflating dialogue ever written. Thankfully, such banter never stops. Of course, such mindless chatter simply must be coupled with "acting" that can only be described as vastly non-scintillating.

Once they arrive in the actual swamplands, our first question is, "Where the hell is that ape, so he can start killing these people?!". Sadly, the beast is apparently busy elsewhere, perhaps in some other movie, allowing our human cast to further exceed their expiration dates.

After several more stretches of plotless nothingness, the title creature arrives. Limited madness ensues, including the incredible "swamp ape erectile dysfunction" sequence!

Whew!

At only 59 minutes in length, this movie seems eternal. Recommended for only the stoutest of sub-sludge cinema enthusiasts...

Enjoyable b movie
donnellcustomcreations10 September 2017
Knowing from the beginning this wasn't gonna be a Oscar worthy movie, I was pleasantly surprised. Just the right amount of puns, quips, sarcasm and bad special effects makes for a fun viewing. Although I did want more gruesome death scenes. At just under an hour it gets to the story quick and doesn't pad it's run time with stock scenery footage or bad transitions/wipes. Will recommend to friends.

The Greatest Movie of all time.
yukimi-6413615 August 2018
A modern masterpiece. A god send. A diamond in the rough. All these phrases aren't enough to describe this movie. It's on par with the majesty that was released 15 years ago "The Room". I can not recommend it enough. Geoff Ward is a genius with him being both the writer and director, and still managing to create this wonderful piece of art.

Fun hour!
davewillhg26 August 2022
One of the so bad it's good movies, but then it really wasn't that bad. The film kept me engaged because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The special effects were hilarious, they tried and got the point across. The cast had some attractive actors who's acting was perfect for this quality movie. There were some really funny one liners and hilarious unbelievable situations that still have me giggling well after the movie. Let's just say Sasquatch are supposed to be attracted to "shark week" women. I throughly enjoyed the hour it ran and it could have gone on longer for the entertainment value it presented.

The citizen cane of the 21st century
bdreissmls2 September 2022
I've heard so much told about Swamp Ape and Geoff Ward, so I finally decided to get the film, and find out if it really is all that it's cracked up to be... I must say, it's great. The plot is great, and the way it's told is amazing. The story is first summed up in a matter of minutes, about 15, to be more accurate, and then the rest of the film has characters telling the story through flashbacks and retelling. We hear just about every opinion about Swamp Ape, apart from his own. The story is told after his death, and we see everything important that leads up to it, and only in the very end do we understand him, only then do we fully understand who he was, and what made him so. The ending also reveals one of the very most important things in any man or woman... one thing that everyone needs and knows of. I won't reveal it here, as it would almost be a crime to spoil the experience of this film to anyone. The acting is excellent; Geoff himself is stellar as Swamp Ape, and his impressive appearance, along with his commanding voice, makes the character a forceful sight, nay, experience. The characters are well-written and credible. The character of Swamp Ape is probably the most well-rounded and perfectly built up I've seen in a movie, ever. The cinematography is excellent... the editing is great. I can't praise the angles, pans, zooms and transitions enough... it just has to be experienced. Now, for the one thing I can criticize in the film; the pacing. It's only two hours long, but it feels like much, much more. There were portions of the film where it felt like it didn't move at all. When there weren't great dialog or something equally as good in the film, it dragged terribly. There were too many scenes where the dialog seemed pointless, as well, I think. It didn't seem to be leading to anything. However, this criticism is so minor, due to the ending more than making up for it, that I still give this film a perfect score. I can't do anything but agree with its placing at the top of the top #250 films of all time, here on IMDb. As I'm writing this, it's #11. That's pretty much what it deserves, in my opinion. Not higher, not lower. Not the greatest film of all time(that pretty much still belongs to The Godfather, I think... at least, I haven't seen a better film than that, yet), but definitely far up there. I recommend this to any fan of film in general, and anyone who thinks they can understand it; it has a truly profound point that any man(and woman) should know of(preferably through seeing the film for themselves). Don't let the fact that it's a small budget youtube movie deter you from seeing this masterpiece. A true cinematic masterpiece, in every sense of the word. 10/10.

Swamp Ape rules!
greenjeep92629 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
If you are a fan of B horror movies, this is it! Clichés abound! For those who are reviewing it like it is a cinematic version of Hamlet, horror is not your thing. The best is when all the characters take a swing at Swamp Ape, prompting their demise. The director is a hero, and everyone involved has a worthy sense of humor. Roll a fat one and watch Swamp Ape. This one's going into my collection.

Possibly the best movie I've seen in the past ten years. Cinematic excellence
cole_ishee15 August 2017
If i could give more stars i would. My favorite movie of the last decade. The actors became their roles. You really felt for them, and their fear of SWAMP APE. Caution watching with your children though, their is a bit of a graphic love scene, however it is quite tasteful. But in all seriousness though, truly, a masterpiece.

A gift from god himself
coustuco28 July 2023
Never before has something which can only be defined as a holy gift from the heavens changed me in so many ways. Before this piece of art, I was a broken man, a lost soul wandering the planet in search of meaning. But as all hope seemed lost I saw what can only be described as a miracle, an angel (TCL movies) blessed me with its presence and guided me to salvation. Never before had I endured so much happiness yet still left yearning for more. The way the light dances across the screen and the deep bond that is formed between the viewer and the character can only be described as a feeling of pure joy. Geoff or St Ward has opened my eyes to this holy sight and I regard this film to be more sacred than the bible. I review this masterpiece twice a day hoping to extract more information from it as I wander through the endless valley in the pursuit of knowledge.

Great film would recommend.👍.🤙.😻.🐘.💨 Eric Chan.

One of the best worst movies of all time
risleyaaronj10 July 2023
I am a huge fan of terrible movies. I love them because they are so fun to criticize. The acting sucks, the monster sucks, the dialogue sucks, the camera quality is atrocious, the music is terrible (what I mean to say is that the music is put in at terrible times), and the whole plot is just stupid. The only reason I'm rating this a 10/10 is because it's obvious that this was a movie made by some friends because they were bored. Sure it looks like all the dialogue was improvised on the spot, and the story is super loose but if you just want to get together with friends and watch a terrible movie for the hell of it then this movie is definitely the gold standard. But in all honesty this movie is atrociously bad!
