Social media sensation Cameron Dallas has signed a recording contract in partnership with Columbia, Variety has learned. A top influencer, the 23-year-old boasts 20.8 million followers on Instagram, 16.5 million on Twitter and 5.7 million subscribers on YouTube and starred in the 2016 Netflix series “Chasing Cameron.”
As recently as last week, Dallas was spotted on the Los Angeles campus of Sony Music, of which Columbia Records is a subsidiary. Meetings with label brass about the direction of his music were on the agenda, according to sources.
A California native, Dallas first came to prominence in 2012 on Vine and eventually grew a following that landed him among the top stars of the now defunct Twitter platform. On Instagram, he currently holds an A grade and is ranked 93rd by social media metrics site Social Blade.

Digital influencers who’ve launched original projects on Netflix haven't always received the kindest reviews, including Colleen Ballinger’s comedy Haters Back Off and Cameron Dallas’ Chasing Cameron docuseries. However, it looks like American Vandal -- a true crime spoof headlined by sketch comedy creator and vlogger Jimmy Tatro -- has become a bonafide critical hit.
American Vandal, which chronicles the mock-investigation of a high school student who’s been accused of spray-painting penises on cars in the school parking lot, has received a 93% rating from review aggregation platform Rotten Tomatoes. Vanity Fair called Tatro’s performance “appealingly oafish” while New York magazine said the series was “almost brilliant.” Los Angeles Times television critic Robert Lloyd wrote, “It’s as engrossing as the series it set out to satirize and moving in ways you would not expect.”

In gathering a library of original programs that often feature online video stars in featured roles, YouTube Red has welcomed tour documentaries as a significant part of its lineup. Now, the $9.99-per-month service has once again made plans to chronicle a YouTube star’s life on the road. This time, the creator in question is violinist Lindsey Stirling, who will be the subject of the upcoming film Brave Enough.
Stirling, whose blend of dance moves, violin skills, and creative costumes has allowed her music videos to become viral hits, has played to sold-out shows around the world and has seen big sales on her album releases. Brave Enough will follow the musician as she tours in support of her latest LP, which shares its name with the forthcoming documentary.
Brave Enough is directed by Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, who Variety (which first reported on the upcoming documentary) notes are Emmy winners.

Less than one month after the premiere of Chasing Cameron, a docuseries focused on the touring life of social media star Cameron Dallas, it has been confirmed that the series is coming back for more.
“For sure. 100%. There will be a season two,” Dallas said in a red carpet interview at the People’s Choice Awards earlier this week. And whereas the first season of Chasing Cameron followed Dallas as he embarked on the first international Meet And Greet Convention (Magcon) Tour with fellow influencers Aaron Carpenter, Taylor Caniff, Willie Jones, Trey Schafer, and Blake Grey, season two will feature a different premise altogether, he said.

On December 27th, Chasing Cameron, a series that focuses on the touring life of social media star Cameron Dallas, arrived on Netflix. The show follows Dallas and some of his friends and collaborators as they embark on a tour across Europe. Does that premise make for a compelling series?
Apparently not, according to reviews. Critics have characterized the show as easily-digestible fluff, with Michael Andor Brodeur of The Boston Globe saying the show “feels like peak nothing.” Kevin O’Keeffe of Mic uses the term “propaganda with teeth,” and he spends most his review talking about how much of the show’s drama is dispelled by the fact that Dallas, who also serves as executive producer, clearly wants to maintain a clean image. As he writes:
“This is Chasing Cameron's critical problem. Production team Magical Elves (who produced Top Chef) have mined some surprisingly smart drama of the personal...
