Not too bad for the most part

"Landrauschen" is a new German 105-minute movie written and directed by Lisa Miller and it is actually her first writing and directing effort. The main characters are mostly female and you can see two of them on the poster here on imdb. Actually, early on it felt as if it would only be about the girl with the pink hair, but the longer it goes, the more the chubby one moves into the center of it all. I guess her story (lesbianism, church, unrequited love) had just too much (bait) to offer to not further elaborate on any of it. Still I thought the first half was better, also because this was really where the movie did not take itself too seriously and to be fair, the outcome here just wasn't good enough quality-wise for the impact they are trying to make occasionally, even if it is all hidden behind individual story lines. Also the small inclusion about the refugee crisis or lets say about xenophobia feel a bit rushed in for the sake of it. Shame. The film really did not need these to make an impact. The main character's struggles with love life, her family and of course her job most of all were executed competently and worked perfectly fine. Add to that the moments of occasionally situational comedy (the police officers were brilliant and so was the dad) that never felt cringey could have been an amazing basis for an okay character study. There is a great deal of regional comedy in here. Maybe if you come from Germany, then you have come acriss these many crime movies from recent years that all offer a great deal of coemdy typical for specific German regions and this one here is the same without the crime, but with the drama instead and the location here is southern Germany. Oh well, if we count this left-wing propaganda tag on the wall is a severe case of crime you could say, or at least the hilarious police officer with the remarkable teeth would say so because in that area that's really all the crime they are getting I assume. What else can you say about this movie. Here and there it drags a bit too much for its own good, so 90 minutes would have been sufficient without some of the filler material scenes. Ther performance are sometimes good, sometimes bad. Early on, there was one office worker who really only had one sentence, but was generously bad. The mother also missed out on some lines and besides it felt that the actors were sometimes smiling more than they should be in character. Good for them for having a good time, but it just did not fit here and there. Wolf was good though and very consistent, Sauter wasn't bad either. All in all, an okay film from Germany that is especially interesting for people living in the area in and around Ulm or in southern Germany at least. Still, the humor can also be appreciated by anybody else and there is no heavy dialect, so regardless of where you are from you will understand what's going on. Not a must-see, but good enough for a thumbs-up and positive recommendation. Go for it.

Valid...

I really like alternative cinema, I admire the grandeur and courage of independent cinema, a young director, exposing herself in an almost unconventional biography, but very liberal and sentimental, with all the doubts, curiosities, dissatisfactions and healthy rebellions of adult youth... It was not as impactful as I would have liked, nor as empathetic as I expected, but it questions prejudices, valid.
