When it comes to China, the discourse surrounding queer identities – like many other issues – can be placed in a gray area, on the fragile border with taboo. However, cinema is perhaps the most powerful visual medium for better understanding certain dynamics that are too often subject to useless labels and dichotomous discussions. For this reason, I have selected 12 works – including narrative feature films and documentaries – that explore and reflect on intimate queer representation. The list is presented in chronological order and includes titles from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan
1. Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan (1972) Chor Yuan
“Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan” is a 1972 Hong Kong wuxia film directed by Chor Yuen, known for its blend of elements from martial arts and erotica. It's ironic that one of the best moments of collective cinema watching this year should come near the start of Ja Bayona's Society Of The Snow which is destined for the more solitary-watching confines of Netflix. The impact of the plane crash near the start of this retelling of the remarkable true survival story is shown in visceral detail with a sound design that slams right through you.
Bayona proved he had what it takes for recreating disasters in his tsunami-driven The Impossible and he shows he's lost none of his touch. Part of the plane is ripped off and passengers ripped shockingly out with it. Inside, the seats concertina, killing several of the passengers on impact, while the camera lingers fractionally on a number of horrors as they unfold. The result in the packed cinema where I saw it at San Sebastian Film Festival was to leave the.

The son of the original 'Snow White' director has slammed Disney's "woke" live-action remake of the film.David Hand, whose father of the same name worked with Walt Disney to create the beloved 1937 animated movie, has described the new project as "insulting" to the original picture and suggested that the duo would be "turning in their graves".Rachel Zegler stars in the title role in the new movie and sparked controversy by calling the original flick "extremely dated" while hinting at an overhaul of the plot but Hand feels that her views "misunderstand" the animated film. The 91-year-old, who worked as a designer for Disney during the 1990s, told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "I mean, it's a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it."I think it's pathetic that people feel that way.

The debut full-length from Mean Girls and Secret Life of College Girls star Reneé Rapp begins with a striking image: “Taste the blood in my mouth,” she coos at the start of its opening track “Talk Too Much,” an extreme close-up of a neurotic mind in what might be love. Spindly guitars and crisp percussion accompany Rapp’s worst-case-scenario obsessions before exploding on its sugar-bomb chorus, which encapsulates early-adulthood angst while paying homage to Seventies power pop with some well-placed “ooh-woo-ooh-woos”; its breakdown takes the concept literally by allowing Rapp...

First must come the consumer warning. I read this digitally, which means flipping through the pages would have been more cumbersome than with a physical book, and I took the “152 pages” as an indication of the length of the story.
Reader, I was misled.
Only the End of the World Again is a 48-page story, bulked out by an sketchbook section exactly twice its size that shows the thumbnail layouts and un-lettered final inks for each page side-by-side, presumably for fans of art to take a magnifying glass to them and make various low appreciative noises in the back of their throats for the next several hours. I did not do so; that’s not how I read books.

Cynthia Weil, the celebrated songwriter who helped craft timeless hits like the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” the Animals’ “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” and Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire,” died Thursday, June 1. She was 82.
Weil’s daughter, Jenn Mann, confirmed her death, though no cause was given. “My mother, Cynthia Weil, was the greatest mother, grandmother and wife our family could ever ask for,” Mann said. “She was my best friend, confidant, and my partner in crime and an idol and trailblazer for women in music.

Update, July 4: Another victim of Disney’s cost-cutting on the streaming front has emerged: “Crater,” a sci-fi adventure film about a group of children that hijack a rover before a member of the group relocates to a new planet. The film, starring Mckenna Grace and Isaiah Russell-Bailey with a featured role played by Kid Cudi, drew mostly positive reviews around its debut on the streaming service on May 12. Roughly seven weeks later, “Crater” has been pulled from Disney+.
The original report follows.
Disney’s content culling from Disney+ and Hulu is coming as early as next week — with the media company pulling off more than 50 titles, including series “Willow,” “The Mysterious Benedict Society” and “Dollface,” and movies such as “The One and Only Ivan.”

Asli (Merve Dizdar) didn’t have to come. It doesn’t matter that her compulsory assignment as a nurse was to be stationed in a small Turkish village in the middle of nowhere. Her father had strings to pull to get her reassigned. The reason she went anyway isn’t about not wanting to cheat the system like her parents think when they blame “stubbornness” as the cause of their fear for her safety due to blizzards and bear attacks. It’s because Asli doesn’t want to feel as though she needs protection. She doesn’t. She’s an adult woman who understands all too well the implicit patriarchal demand for compensation that comes with good deeds—that sense of feeling trapped, always owing. She’s tired of not being respected and having no control.
It’s that sense of always being on alert that drove director Selcen Ergun...

Spoiler Alert: This review contains details of Game of Thrones spinoff House of The Dragon, which debuts August 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
Besides being bawdy and fire spewing, HBO’s House of the Dragon is no Game of Thrones.
That dissimilarity actually might be the saving grace for the sword and regal struggle spectacle prequel inspired by George R.R. Martin’s writing. Yet, capturing lightening in a bottle twice is quite a rare feat, even with a return to King’s Landing and a massive built-in and braying fanbase.
Underneath all the wails of hype, if ever there was a series set up to fail no matter how much it succeeds, it is House of the Dragon. The series from showrunners Ryan J. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik will only be gauged by one criteria openly or not, and GoT is a standard HoD can’t meet.
So, spoiler alert,...

After three solemn features centered on the ramifications of war — not just in her home country of Bosnia but, in 2017’s “Never Leave Me,” Syria too — writer-director Aida Begić leaves political conflict behind in her fourth. “A Ballad,” however, charges no less abrasively into the emotional battleground of a young woman’s separation from her long-term partner, and the personal, legal and familial skirmishes that hamper her fight for independence. Very loosely inspired by the 17th-century South Slavic ballad “Hasanaginica,” Begić’s ambitious, jaggedly structured film brashly updates its moral of female sorrow and subservience to far more modern ideals of feminist resolve and rejection of the patriarchy.
Not every one of the film’s swirling subplots lands, just as not all its social and philosophical lines of inquiry come crisply into focus. But this is the most distinctive and artistically exciting work yet from Begić, who won Cannes prizes for her first two features,...

The success of "The Hunger Games" quadrilogy cannot be overstated. Based on Suzanne Collins' YA novel series, the adaptations painted Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) as the perfect Mockingjay — the face (and heart) of the rebellion. In 2020, Collins released a prequel novel to the series titled "The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes," which is set 64 years before the events of "The Hunger Games." Now that an adaptation of the novel is in the works, director Francis Lawrence, who helmed the last three films in the quadrilogy, has returned to bring the complex narrative of "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" to life.
"The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" will be closely following an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, who eventually becomes the tyrannical ruler of Panem in "The Hunger Games." In a Vanity Fair exclusive, Lawrence described the adaptation as "a story about love ... set in a different kind of world in a different time.

Gal Gadot will soon take on another iconic character in a live-action adaptation of a classic story: the “Wonder Woman” star is set to play the Evil Queen in Disney’s upcoming “Snow White” remake.
Gadot was beaming while speaking for her first time about her villainous Disney role.
“I’m so excited,” she told Variety on Wednesday night at the premiere of her new action film, “Red Notice,” which launches Nov. 12 on Netflix.
When asked what attracted her to the role of the Evil Queen in this iteration of “Snow White,” Gadot gave a major smile, but refrained from giving away too many details on the storyline.

On October 23rd, 2011, Once Upon A Time premiered on ABC. It was a show about fairytale characters/Disney properties and what happens when they end up in our world. The show lasted for seven years, boasted one spin-off and an active fanbase.
It's been ten years since Emma Swan blew out a candle on a cupcake and made a wish that changed her life, and much like with Revenge and Hart of Dixie, I wanted to mark the occasion.
TV Fanatic staff writers Laura Nowak, Becca Newton, former staff writer Sarah Little, and I discussed what we loved about the show, what we hated, what we shipped, and how we fangirl now that it's all over.
What made you watch Once Upon A Time going in? What expectations did you have of the show? Do you feel the show met those expectations?

Are fairy tales nothing more than tired tropes? It’s an intriguing concept that guides “White As Snow.” The film offers a blunt inspection of the standard fairy tale while skillfully updating typical constructs. Centered around the strained stepmother/stepdaughter dynamic, screenwriters Pascal Bonitzer and Anne Fontaine give the latter character a sense of freedom as well as choice. This is prevalent especially when it comes to instilling sexuality not as a device, but as a natural part of life itself.

One of cinema’s great collaborations is that between director Wong Kar-wai and cinematographer Christopher Doyle, together responsible for Days of Being Wild, Ashes of Time, Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, and 2046—the majority of which were restored for Criterion’s new box set. With Wong retooling his films in varying capacities, we’ve wondered if Doyle was involved in this process and what he thinks about the changes. When we caught up with the cinematographer about a year ago, he didn’t seem greatly interested in revisiting his acclaimed work with the Hong Kong legend, but he’s since opened up in a recent interview.
“I think that we should not be so sensitive with our works. You have to let go, let them go. No need to masturbate over creations. I was not firmly involved in the restorations, although I gave my...

Seeing how many great movies are on the lineup this year, we wouldn't blame you if you just decided to sit on the couch and watch TV all winter long. There are holiday classics like Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as well as some nostalgic gems like The Santa Clause films. I'm personally excited to rewatch Dr. Seuss' The Grinch just for the great quotes alone. See the full schedule ahead.
Tuesday, Dec. 1
11:00 a.m. – Disney's A Christmas Carol
1:00 p.m. – Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
3:30 p.m. – Home Alone

Exclusive: Amazon has put in development the fantasy drama Havenfall, based on the novel by Sara Holland, from feature writer Evan Daugherty (Divergent), Lauren Oliver’s Glasstown Entertainment, Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures and Amazon Studios, where Oliver and Glasstown are under a deal.
Written by Daugherty, Havenfall chronicles the story of Maddie, who returns to a place from her youth for the summer: a mysterious hotel called Havenfall Inn, nestled in the Rockies overlooking a sleepy Colorado town. A place which, unbeknownst to the world, contains portals leading to different fantastical realms. Havenfall has also long-served as a neutral territory that links these realms, but that peaceful status is disrupted by a shocking murder that will force Maddie to confront dark truths about her family.
Daugherty executive produces with Oliver via her Glasstown Entertainment and Goldsman and Greg Lessans for Weed Road. Amazon Studios produces in association with Glasstown and Weed Road.

After reading Heather's recent 4/5 review for The Wolf of Show Hollow, I can't wait to check it out this weekend and we're excited to share with Daily Dead readers and exclusive track from the movie's soundtrack! Also due out on October 9th, the 20-track release was composed by Ben Lovett and will be available courtesy of Lakeshore Records:
Lakeshore Records is set to release The Wolf of Snow Hollow—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on October 9. Composed by Ben Lovett, the album is a strikingly orchestrated, multi-faceted work inspired by old school Bernard Herrmann-era suspense thrillers reflecting all the dimensions of the offbeat horror film—from darkly comedic to tension-fueled terror to oddball mystery caper. The album includes the newly reimagined cover version of “Little Red Riding Hood” originally performed by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs in 1966, and given a seductive and thoroughly haunting treatment by Lovett and indie artist Valen.

Someone — or something — is killing young women in the sleepy town of Snow Hollow. The situation is worse than that, actually: The insidious lupine assailant rips off their limbs, separates their heads, and leaves a gaping hole where their most intimate parts ought to be. Ghastly as that sounds, “The Wolf of Snow Hollow” treats these murders as a joke. Or more accurately, it treats them as the setup for a uniquely uncomfortable sitcom of sorts, one that’s less concerned with solving the case than it is with showcasing the odd mix of characters tasked with investigating the crimes.
Those characters include a violence-averse police chief and a scene-stealing female officer (“Garfunkel & Oates” alum Riki Lindhome) whose intuition is every bit as sharp as her comic timing. But the central personality here — the one guilty of sucking up most of the oxygen in the room — is writer-director Jim Cummings,...

‘Mulan’ Review: Niki Caro’s Sweeping Live-Action Disney Epic Reimagines a Heroine Worth Fighting for
Disney’s beloved Princess tales are no stranger to classic mythology, and everything from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to “The Princess and the Frog” have pulled liberally from existing material to craft family-friendly animated outings centered on inspirational women. Such was the case with the Mouse House’s 1998 animated hit “Mulan,” which used a centuries-old piece of Chinese folklore to craft the story of the first Asian Disney Princess, complete with requisite musical numbers and even a cute (if later maligned) talking animal pal. “The Ballad of Mulan” has inspired countless adaptations over the years, and while Niki Caro’s live-action update, starring the engaging Yifei Liu, still retains some trappings of its Disney-fication, it’s also

Pete Hamill, the Brooklyn-born journalist whose street-savvy writing style and editorial hand lent an authentic, even quintessential voice to city tabloids The New York Post and The Daily News over a 50-year-career, died today in his native borough. He was 85.
His brother, the writer Denis Hamill, told The New York Times that Hamill fell at home on Saturday after returning from a dialysis treatment. He was taken to Brooklyn’s Methodist Hospital were he died apparently from kidney and heart failure.
Hamill began his newspaper career at the Post in 1960. Over the next decades he would write for the Daily News, Newsday, The Village Voice, The Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, Playboy, Rolling Stone and many other publications. Along with columnist Jimmy Breslin, Hamill popularized a streetwise writing style that could seem equal parts Norman Mailer, Damon Runyon and the millions of outer borough residents he both championed and chronicled.

There is nothing quite like a snow day. It is almost like the snow cast a spell on everything that it touches, and magic happens. A snow day at Scarlet is no exception.
On The Bold Type Season 4 Episode 12, when a blizzard shuts down the city, leaving everyone stranded where they are, the Bold Babes were all facing individual challenges, but the magic of the snow day helped them all pull through it.
Read through our review as we discuss!
There is so much to unpack that I almost don't know where to begin. The writers managed to weave in honest conversations about heavy issues in an incredibly authentic way.
One of the best things about the writers is that they trust their audience. On a network like Freeform, which targets a more youthful demographic, it is easy for writers to dumb down the issues thinking they are speaking to a younger audience.

There’s certainly no shortage of content across all of your favorite streaming services right now. Netflix and Disney+, especially, have been knocking it out of the park while everyone is stuck inside waiting out the coronavirus. Today marks another content drop for Netflix, too, adding a handful of new titles you might want to check out.
Perhaps the most notable inclusion is the Netflix Original film Extraction, starring Chris Hemsworth. It’s currently sitting at 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, and most critics seem to agree that Hemsworth has finally found his groove in the action flick that sees him play a mercenary attempting to recover the kidnapped son of a crime lord. If you’re in the mood for some explosive action, grab some popcorn and give it a go.
Meanwhile, the kid-friendly Mirror Mirror, starring Julia Roberts and Lily Collins, provides a unique retelling of the story of Snow White.

It was a little over a year ago when Netflix unveiled the first trailer for their new buddy drama/comedy, “Dead to Me.” The series, starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini focused heavily on the nature of grief and trauma, blending dark storylines with the idea of friendship blooming in the unlikeliest places.
Now, the second season has landed an Emmy-friendly May release date, making it a short wait to discover how Judy (Cardellini) and Jen (Applegate) have moved forward from last year’s twist ending. The 40-second teaser trailer spends nearly half the time recapping Season 1, wherein (spoiler alert) Judy was discovered to be the woman who struck and killed Jen’s husband with her car. In the season finale, Jen shot Judy’s ex-fiance, played by James Marsden, leaving his corpse to lie in her swimming pool.

One of the most memorable and star-studded creature features of the ’90s, Anaconda is being reimagined at Columbia Pictures.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Evan Daugherty (writer of Killing Season and co-writer of 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman) has been hired to write a screenplay for an "an all-new and all-modern take" on Anaconda.
While plot details have yet to be unveiled, THR reveals that the studio is "hoping to take a Meg-style approach" to the reimagining. According to Box Office Mojo, the 2018 colossal shark movie brought in more than $530 million worldwide on an estimated $130 million production budget. A producer and director have not been announced for the new Anaconda film at this time.
Released in 1997, Anaconda followed a film crew and a guide with a hidden agenda deep into the Amazon jungle, where they found themselves prey to a massive snake of prehistoric proportions.
