Just plain fun!

This is a simple story, but the CGI was really amazing and made it among the most beautiful of the shorts shown today. It's a simple tale of humans landing on some desolate planet…and soon they are joined by some goofy looking aliens who just landed and claimed the planet as well. Instead of talking it out, it turns into a blood bath and soon a third ship lands.

Despite being a French film, the cartoon was in English and I assume they must have made multiple versions. As I said above, the story is very simple but was executed so well that it's worth seeing…and it did something very few of the Oscar nominees did this year…it made me smile and was not oppressively gloomy.

Not entirely bad, but too absurd at times

Warning: Spoilers
"Asteria" is a 5-minute animated short film from 2016 and this runtime already includes credits, so this is a really short one. It was relatively close to being nominated for an Oscar, but eventually did not make the cut. The writer and one of the directors is Alexandre Arpentinier, his very first work and still a success with the attention it received. I still wonder how many directors worked on this very short film. Anyway, this is the story of two astronauts reaching a distant planet. But they are not alone. The creatures they meet remind me somehow of what Minions would look like if they were aliens. But the filmmakers of this popular series are not despicable enough to graphically kill Minions in contrast to the ones we have here. Oh yeah, a bit of golfing is involved too. Wait and see who gets the last laugh. I am not yet really sure if I liked the ending or not. But i must say that while the film began in a pretty solid manner, it became emptier and emptier the longer it went, which means with this runtime it happened pretty quickly here. No message, no really touching or funny moments and the solid animation just isn't enough to make up for all the forgettable aspects. I am not too sad this one did not get in with the Academy. Still given the fact that it is Arpentinier's first work, there is some potential here to build on for future projects, maybe even full feature films.

Actually better than some of the ones that were nominated for Oscars this year!

'ASTERIA': Four Stars (Out of Five)

A 5-minute French animated short film. This one is about two astronauts that are trying to get rid of some annoying aliens, on a newly discovered planet, so they can plant their flag there. It was directed by Alexandre Arpentinier (who also wrote the screenplay), Mathieu Blanchys, Lola Grand, Tristan Lamarca, Thomas Lemaille and Jean- Charles Lusseau. This short is pretty funny, in a very darkly comedic way, and it's also shockingly violent. There is an overall positive message against war in it though, I think, about how we all take ourselves too seriously. It's kind of a nasty little cartoon movie, but I think it still means well. It's another 'Highly Commendable' animated short, that played with the Oscar nominated ones in theaters, that's actually better than some of the ones that were nominated for Oscars this year.

Asteria (2017)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Highly entertaining French short has a couple astronauts landing on a planet but before they can place their flag they notice a group of aliens about to put their flag in. Soon the two sides are doing battle but neither one realizes the importance of the flags. ASTERIA lasts just four-minutes but it's a delight from start to finish. I'm not going to spoil the big twist at the end but it's just so clever that you'll certainly be laughing at it. I really enjoyed this film as it's quite clever throughout its running time and I'd argue that it has a lot of nice imagination as well. I really liked the computer effects as I thought the outer space look was terrific as were the aliens.

landing story

Nice, crazy, absurd, amusing, nice. And lovely CGI. A story about the landing of the plan, a competition and a battle, a solution and the shocking end. A seductive animation about obscure, significant things. Almost a parable, a good one. And , sure, a far planet and its ...conquerers.
