Hailey and Rodrigo have broken up and are in the emotional doldrums. Hailey is reduced to playing oboe to spoiled pets for money. Rodrigo is frustrated by the youth symphony's lack of progress. Hailey's star is rising, however, while Rodrigo's may be setting. Rodrigo's out of control antics cause the new oboist to quit, opening up the slot for Hailey to return as a sub. Before conducting Hesby's new work, Rodrigo quits. He leaves a baton with instruction that Hailey is to conduct the piece. He goes to the park to meet Egon who tells him to dance alone for no one and to be nothing. Hailey rises to the occasion and wows the audience with her impromptu conducting. She learns that Rodrigo was in the auditorium cheering her triumph. Mozart reappears to Rodrigo in the park. The scene closes with Rodrigo sitting by the pond in the park wondering what direction to take.
As I said, satisfyingly unsatisfying. A suitable end to an excellent series. The intertwined character development of the two principals was superbly choreographed, culminating in the Tea Ceremony.. The main supporting roles played by Bernadette Peters and Malcolm McDowell both mirror and contrast the relationship of Hailey and Rodrigo throughout the series. All of the other supporting roles and subplots added interest and texture in every episode.
