Prince William is speaking out about the shocking deaths of rangers trying to protect the lives of elephants, rhinos and other endangered wildlife.
William, 35, appears in the hard-hitting new film, The Last Animals, which documents the decimation of Africa’s wildlife by ruthless poachers. The film traces the killing from the savannas of Africa to the consumers in Asia and around the world – and the often deadly efforts to stop the illegal trade.
William, who has regularly raised fears that these animals will be lost from the world by the time his 2-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, is 25, appears after the...

Elephants in the wild in The Last Animals
In an age when mammal species right across the Earth are in serious decline - humans being a noteable exception - larger creatures are being hit particularly hard. Documentarian Kate Brooks took up her camera to explore the danger facing elephants and rhinos - and to tell the story of the brave people who put their lives on the line to defend them. The Last Animals is a film destined to fascinate and delight audiences in equal measure. I asked Kate how it all began.
"In 2010 I was working with a medevac team in south Afghanistan and at the end of that I went on a pre-planned vacation in Kenya," she begins. "I went to the Masai Mara trying to process everything that I'd witnessed, and during that process I saw a herd of elephants in the wild for the first time,...

Documentary festival announces winners.
Matthew Heineman’s City Of Ghosts has won the grand jury award at Sheffield Doc/Fest (June 9-14).
The award, supported by Screen International and Broadcast, comes with a cash prize of £2,000 ($2,800).
The film covers covert citizen journalist group Rbss (Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently), who are exposing the horrors of life under Isis rule via the media. Amazon have picked up worldwide rights to the film.
On behalf of the jury, Paul Mason said, “City of Ghosts is a passionate portrayal of people who took their lives in their hands to fight an evil that looms over the world. In our discussions we wanted the film makers to answer: who created Isis and who sustains it today? A compelling and vital film.”
The jury also included Andrea Arnold and Anand Pathwardan.
There was also special mentions for The Death And The Life of Marsha P. Johnson, [link...

In a world where TV networks fight for the opportunity to showcase the best nonfiction content that will keep viewers on their couches, the Toronto-based Hot Docs Canadian International Film Festival (April 27 – May 7) is a very, very good place to be.
What began 24 years ago as a modest showcase for Canadian documentaries is now a sprawling international program that screens 230 titles from 58 countries. The festival still favors homegrown product, but also amplifies movies from Sundance (“Chasing Coral,” “Long Strange Trip,” “City of Ghosts”) and Tribeca (“The Departure,” “A River Below”), as well as some international (Joe Berlinger’s “Intent to Destroy”) and world premieres (“A Moon of Nickel and Ice”).
“Hot Docs creates an environment where you can meet with the best in the documentary world,” said director Cullen Hoback, who brought his sharp pollution whodunit “What Lies Upstream” first to Slamdance, then to Hot Docs (Preferred Content is seeking...

The Tribeca Film Festival has a history of showing tremendous new environmental documentaries, and this year the stand-out film in this area is Kate Brooks’ The Last Animals, a gut-wrenching investigation into the illicit ivory and rhino horn trade around the globe. When seen in conjunction with the short virtual reality piece The Protectors, which also features the rangers at Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this feature-length doc shines a new light on an issue that is not as far from home as many North American viewers may suspect. At its world premiere screening last week the […]...
