Had promise but fell short
fcspikeit20 January 2019
The acting was pretty good considering how bad the script was at times. The overall story was predictable and never really went anywhere. I gave it a 4 out of 10 because it was interesting enough to watch to the end but I wouldn't have missed out if I never started it.

Alien it ain't
fordmank-800-4703532 February 2019
Being a big fan of 50's and 60's sci-fi movies, I found this movie rather enjoyable. Bad acting, bad writing, wandering plot, but I liked it.

Overall a gentle move.
rrtiverton12 July 2021
The plot was interesting, the acting was okay. It was not a "creature feature", but a movie where the alien was more benevolent. If it wasn't for a smattering of profanity, this movie could easily have been PG. I would go as far as to suggest a safe movie for pre-teens.

Fairly evenly cast.

Conclusion: Not an irritating waste of time.

Slow paced and rather uneventful...
paul_haakonsen16 January 2021
Right, well given this 2018 sci-fi drama's low rating on IMDb, I must admit that I was somewhat hesitant about sitting down to watch it. Especially so since I am not a big sci-fi fan. But still, it was a movie that I hadn't already seen before, and I had the chance, so of course I gave it a chance.

I must say, first and foremost, that "Encounter", from writer and director Paul Salamoff wasn't exactly a super thrilling or exciting movie. The movie was actually unfathomably slow paced, to the point where it was starting to become a boring movie to sit through.

The storyline told in "Encounter" was straight forward, but it was just way too uneventful. It felt like I was sitting down at a prolonged dinner party with people I didn't really want to hang out with. And that made the movie feel particularly slow paced and long to sit through. I think that the storyline might have been way more interesting on paper, but it lost its appeal in the transition to the screen.

"Encounter" has a nice cast ensemble, but the actors and actresses were just restricted in giving stellar performances by a sluggish storyline and uneventful directing. It was actually supporting actor Tom Atkins whom brought me the most enjoyment of all the people on the cast list, given his performance and on-screen charisma.

Visually then "Encounter" was adequate. By that, I mean that the special effects - which were practical ones - were adequate and served their purpose well enough. These are not, however, spectacular effects that will blow you away in any way. The feel very much like something you'd see if the movie was made in the mid-1980s.

I was initially going to give the movie a three out of ten stars, but I liked the ending, and it lifted up the movie a bit, but still it wasn't enough to make the ordeal a properly entertaining movie. As such, my rating of Paul Salamoff's "Encounter" settles on a less than mediocre four out of ten stars.

Yet another upvote by cast and crew
Netjer-y-khet20 January 2019
This movie is completely rotten. The acting is woeful and there doesn't seem to be a coherent story line at all. The props and scenes are reminiscent of a truly ancient Dr Who episode. There are things going on in the movie that simply wouldn't happen in a real situation like that portrayed. I'd say what they are but then I'd have to mark this as a spoiler.

In the end, the ten 10/10 scores for this rubbish can't possibly be genuine. Give this trash a wide berth and instead of spending money on it, give a donation to your favourite charity.

Nice little nugget of a story, ineptly told.
k9gardner26 May 2020
This was one of those "makes you wonder" kind of movies. The story line makes you wonder, in a good way. About life, death, what we think we know, what we're afraid of. Theoretically it would provide an opportunity for the actors, writer, director, to sink their teeth into it. The actors did a good enough job; but the characterizations were so inept, obvious and, well, stupid, that I'd expect most people will spend the first half hour yelling at the screen, wondering why they're watching it. Don't worry, it gets better. Hah! Just kidding. It doesn't, but you get a little numb to the dialog and the characters as the story starts to emerge. So yeah, it's ok in that the story does manage to escape the movie's clutches.

Hodgepodge Sci-fi Thriller
cjstanford-650978 August 2021
It's really a 4 rated movie except the insanely stupid looking alien and the quirk at the end which pushed it up a point for extra entertainment. This is what you get when you marry Cocoon with the Umbrella Academy (UA) and use the special effects guy from the Little Shop of Horrors. Literally, the antagonists look, act, and sound like the Assassins from UA they even got look-alike actors. It's been a few days since I saw it, but I think this is probably suitable as a family film- I especially like the message that prejudices can be overcome. The character development is the film's greatest strength, and it has a good message (unrealistic maybe, but good).

Adolescent.

This might've been better if the characters were 11 years old. But that's already been done, so...Watch it if you want but don't pay for it.

It wants to touch you
nogodnomasters20 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a feel-good science fiction that is more about characters than plot. Space Pods have been coming to Earth and are systematically being destroyed by the FBI. Our latest pod lands in a field outside of Augusta, Georgia. A group of beer buddies find the pod and take it home with them. Will (Luke Hemsworth) who is confined to a wheelchair watches over the pod and makes contact. As long as the pod is in contact with him, he can walk. Sort of a blob cocoon type of thing.

The special effects are not overwhelming. You keep wondering what the space pod is doing and if it has a sinister motive. Modest but effective,

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Really, Really bad, IMO
FilmMcCool1 October 2019
Firstly let me say, ones age, recognizable faces, no CGI and using actual props, none of those guarantee a movie will be good. I was also pretty suspicious of the 10/10 reviews as there is no way on Gods earth this movie deserves a 10 in any which way. In fact here are two of the 10/10 reviews:

1. The music is haunting and stays with you. Worth your time. 2. A most watch! It will blow your mind! It kept me engaged.

A one liner is not a review, these reviews are obviously from someone connected with this movie and they get Zero points for trying. Now to the movie, the acting was sub par but the dialog was really, really poor so the actors were doomed from the get go. Then the pacing of the movie was all wrong, that along with a very poor story line and plot etc. In fact the movie was so poor I will not waste any more time on it.

Why the bad reviews?
robot034026 February 2019
I found it captivating and well done. I'm 69 years old and not a fool and this had all the earmarks of a very good movie due to the fact it didn't need gore, violence, sex and unreal cgi to make it that way.

A little more original than some found alien pod movies. acting went the gambit from cheesey cliche to some realism... overall not a bad movie to rent.

Interesting idea, poorly executed
henderson-photo24 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Starring Not Chris Hemsworth, this slowly moving freight train plows it's way through all the cliches commonly found in straight to video 80's alien flicks, with the sfx to match.

Is the alien bad? Is it good? You won't find out until ten seconds before the credits. But of course the evil FBI... wait, the FBI? Why is the FBI kicking down doors for this thing? Is there no Homeland Security, no NSA, no NASA in this dimension?

The end left me with a feeling of, well, confusion.

And the fact that Not Chris Hemsworth has to return to being wherlchair bound really kind of topped it off.

Bad acting: Check Bad script: Check Bad CGI: Check Alien that looks like a stemless Seymore: Check.

Like a SF B movie of the '50.
danilo124 January 2019
Poor idea and poor screenplay. The alien seems to have come out from a low-budget SF film from the 1950s. If really you like science fiction, maybe you shouldn't see this movie.

Get Those Siphons On
westsideschl6 November 2019
Gawd! I hope this film doesn't represent human intelligence. We have an interstellar alien as a rock, traveling for thousands of years if not longer (It's food source during the journey?), that somewhat resembles a bivalve mollusk w/several siphons used to explore/communicate w/what they touch. So, after all that time traveling & withstanding thousands of degrees of meteor type entry it happens to land next to some beer guzzling guys who naturally take it home. Our cute little bivalve inexplicably grows a hundreds times larger, and of course there's a surprise awaiting at the end. I could tell you, but it's even more dumb than what's already been mentioned..

How to review a good idea
abwetman-1-81732825 April 2020
This was a interesting Idea ruined by every cliche and old troupe in the found object sci-fi good old boys movie genre. Cheap special effect make this film Mystery Science Theatre 3000 material .

only watch if high, the writers probably were,

Well,that's 2 hours I won't get back...
misterbroon3332 February 2019
What should have been a well investigated and presented concept turned out to be a right load of cack, not worth the effort of staying awake. What the FBI had to do with it is anyone's guess, SWAT everywhere and nothing to do. The ending was predictable and of no consequence whatsoever. Watch teleshopping instead

Do not listen to the bad reviews
Bruxadomar25 January 2019
No, it is not a blockbuster, yes the act was less than average, the special effects are non existent, however, it is a thinking outside the box type movie and I enjoyed it. If you want to stick to paradigms that is fine but I liked how original this movie is, besides I always say see for yourself and make your own mind. You never know how is rating.

"Shut up John. It's not helping."
hwg1957-102-26570417 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A group of friends find a glowing rock that falls out of the sky and take it home and it starts to grow. But is it a friend or a foe? The film explains it all in a dull and uninvolving manner by way of a confusing script and beige acting. The only actor who stands out is grizzled Tom Atkins as Professor Westleak. He seems like a real person. Not that gripping and the end where the child is reborn is just laughable.

A Mood Changer
robert-cogan7 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a 79 year old Lover of science fiction. Last night, Lying alone in the darkness of South Florida, I came upon this film. It's near the height of Coronavirus. I liked The film: No danger, no violence, and an absurd looking alien Who actually helps humans. No heavy religion or spiritualist element either. Great ending too.

Enjoyable nonsense.
dhoebeck23 January 2019
I wasn't expecting much from this, so the stilted dialogue and intermittent ham acting didn't bother me. Frankly if you look past all that it wove a pretty good yarn. Add a fairly charismatic Hemsworth and a couple of half decent experienced actors and you get a nice little story. I've found it harder to sit through some Hollywood blockbusters recently so lets not be too hard on this low budget effort.

Rated it a one because there was no zero
gfdrojas24 May 2020
One of the worst movies my wife and I have watched. Lifetime movies have better substance and flow. This ranks with movies like Sharknado.

I'm sure this cast could have done a better job with a better script.

Touching movie
agore311 April 2020
This movie deals with the arrival of an object from space and how it affects the people that touch it. There are no car chases or CGI to make up for a story or a some super climatic battle in the end. I am sure some will find fault with the object looking like something from a 50's movie. It is a low budget personal drama. The FBI involvement supposedly adds some X-Files like conspiracy but it is almost played as comic relief and not quite resolved. It is a little slow and did have more potential. It is more like an episode of one of the anthologies like Outer Limits. It does not insult your intelligence, people do not do a lot of dumb things, etc. to drive the drama along.

As for wasting 2 hrs of your life, the movie does not last that long. If you like more sensitive (not all action driven) sci fi stories then it will not likely be a waste of time.
